KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 and he only threw 84 pitches. Good for him, I hope he has a successful career. Yeah I mean losing him is going to hurt but it's not like the Jays could realistically expect to call him up and for him to be David Price. I thnk the Jays would have really, really loved for Norris and/or Boyd to run away with a job in 2015 but it wasn't in the cards and the clock is ticking on this nucleus as well as on AA himself. Desperate times call for bold measures.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I guess my point is the Dodgers and Nats have Kershaw and Scherzer for that huge money, sure, but I am assuming that might take them out of the running in signing Price to a similar deal. Maybe not, but probably. So what clubs have s*** tons of money left for a premium starter like Price? Yankees? No, I think Hal S is frugal and they still wear some albatross expensive deals they would like to shed to get under that luxury tax. Angels? Same thing as the Yanks. In sum, I think we might be one of the few large market teams that can back the truck up and spend on him, especially if this season goes the way it may if we have a great August/September. Not to be a downer, but this narrative gets written almost every year. It means nothing that the Jays are one of the few big market teams with money, because if somebody wants a player enough, they'll pay for them. We already know the Cubs have a ton of money and they'll be big players in the SP market this year. There's also always the mystery team. Nobody saw Fielder going to the Tigers, nobody saw Pujols going to the Angels, nobody saw Cano going to the Mariners, and nobody saw Scherzer going to the Nats. There's no use predicting what the market will be like even when you're in October, let alone in the middle of an active season. The precedent for 200M+ contracts for bona fide aces has already been set, and unless the wheels completely fall off on Price's season, I don't think he'll have much trouble getting himself into that range.
Governator Community Moderator Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 The Blue Jays aren't re-signing David Price and that's okay. He's not giving us a discount so there's no surplus value expected on such an extension. This franchise would be much better off signing a couple lesser pitchers instead to shorter-term deals. Just enjoy 2015. Not everything needs to be about the future. The Blue Jays acquired David Price (for better or worse) with no view of 2016 and beyond. That's how you should view him and the trade too. It's about 2015. Well said, and hey with a little luck Stroshow could end up being that legitimate #1 ace this team desires for the long term anyway.
LTR Verified Member Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I still can't get over 6 years of Daniel Norris for 12 David Price starts (11 now)
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I don't really understand the obsession with re-signing Price. I'd much sooner look to sign Shark or Zimmermann for half the cost of Price, or even try to take a shot at a McCarthy-like deal for Kazmir (that might not be enough if he finishes the season out strong). If the team were to suddenly get into some sort of bloodlust for a legitimate ace, I'd still rather take Greinke over Price. Greinke will get fewer years, and the contract will be a lot more affordable.

You can't take opportunities to go for it for granted. The roster will rarely be better than it is now and the competition will rarely be weaker.

I'm going to enjoy the next 2 months and pray they make the play-offs or at least a WC spot, but after that... uggh It is without a doubt a bad trade on paper but context is everything. If the division was more in reach I'd probably agree with you but giving up so much for a shot at likely the second WC seems foolhardy.

I suppose it is but it could take a long time to get this good again in which case Norris et al. won't really make a difference. I think it's fair to look at how good the team is on paper and not just at the standings.

We're a very good team, especially now but even after all these big moves, Fangraphs Depth Charts still likes Yankees a bit more... and I agree with that. Though I think this includes injured players, that may alter the balance. http://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=Team Edit: With Pineda and CC injured it looks like we are the better overall team. mellowgold Verified Member Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 All you need to do to have Price pitch four games against the Yanks is pitch him every fifth GAME until September 1st (Min, NYY, NYY, LAA, Tex, Cle), and then pitch him every fifth DAY after that (Bal, NYY, Atl, NYY, TB). His spot in the rotation would also be up to pitch either the wild card game, or if we win the division, Game One of the ALDS. It also gives him starts against the Angels and Orioles, likely the two teams we'll be battling for the wild card spots. I think this is the most likely scenario.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Is there room for me? Roy Halladay? Phillies bandwagon too small for you?
Roy Halladay Verified Member Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Roy Halladay? Phillies bandwagon too small for you? Lol. Last time I checked, Roy was one of the most beloved Jays of all time... And he pitched over 10 years in a Jays uniform and 3 in a Phillies. I would rather have him even in his old age in our starting rotation right now then Hutch or Estrada. Regardless, I'm not really a bandwagoner. I've been watching since I can remember. Must have been 5 years old when the Jays won their last world series. But I must say I've been watching quite a bit more lately... . You can only take missed postseason after missed postseason for so long. But thanks for welcoming me to the forum!
