Pretty much exactly what we all could have expected. Played in 305 games (72% of the team's games), racked up 6.7 fWAR, and was generally pretty exciting, especially in 2013.

All in all, above-average play from short for ~40 million over 2.5 years at ~$6M/ WAR. If he were a free agent signing and not a trade acquisition I think people would have loved him.

part of the down time was from an absolute freak injury. He was a good player with lots of energy. I think most people hated the contract and what was given up in the Miami deal. Tulo contract is the same and for longer. We need to hope he's happy in TO and is reasonably healthy or else his contract will kill us

What about all the games he threw away

That comment doesn't make sense. The nature of his skill set was that his weakness were loud (obvious throwing errors) and his biggest strengths (baserunning and being about 25% above average offensively for a shortstop) were more subtle. He was a very good player here.

Nice try troll.

Jose Reyes 3 years prior to Blue Jays 2010-2012: 12.3 WAR / 38 triples / 7.8 def

Jose Reyes 3 years with Blue Jays 2013-2015: 6.8 WAR / 4 triples / -1.5 def

Yeah, exactly the same.

The team wasn't trading for 2010-2012 Reyes. They were trading for slightly past his prime Reyes. The Reyes they got averaged about 3.4 fWAR/150 in his age 30-32 seasons, and missed a bit more time to injury than we would have liked. That's literally exactly what anyone would have reasonably expected from him.

Are there really that many people who don't think Reyes was an above average SS during his time in Toronto?

His personality is awesome. Always hated how some people just decided to interpret that as not caring about winning. Reyes was pretty damn frustrating at times, especially with the hacking, especially with trying to be too cute, and ESPECIALLY with the defensive side of the ball, but I have never really thought of him as slacking off.

Yes. See: Jose Reyes sucks at baseball thread.

Fair. I've left that thread to the trolls.

Yeah, Reyes doesn't deserve the hate he gets from drooling morons like LTR. He seemed like an awesome guy and was a pretty good player.

He was frustrating to watch at times but overall, he did well here. I am so ready for the Tulo era, though.

Couldn't agree with this more. In a game with as much failure as baseball, getting worked up over one at bat isn't worth it.

People said the same about Wells because he was very laid back. "Wells doesn't try" "Wells doesn't care".

I agree with Boxy. Thanks for your work here Jose, but Tulo can't get to Toronto fast enough.

Being able to control your emotions at such a high level in a game designed to make you fail must be considered a skill. Not everyone can do it.

Yeah man he brought a lot of energy to the team. He will be missed for sure.

Reyes would have been a lot easier to handle if we had better pitching. But he just seemed so awful at short. Maybe he wasn't as bad as I thought., but it seemed that way.

Reyes was the best SS that the Jays have had since Fernandez. Tulo is the best SS the Jays have ever had.

It sucks to see the one guy go, but getting the other makes it all worth it.

I think the contract cast a long shadow over Reyes. I think we would have viewed Reyes a bit more positively if we had known that the Jays would be able to get out from the bad end of that deal. As it was, watching him deteriorate was kind of painful because you knew he would keep getting worse while costing more. It was hard to not let that sour you. It was hard to focus on the positives and ignore that. The team's refusal to use a defensive replacement didn't help matters either. Though it's not the only way a shortstop can provide value, it's still kind of a relief to have a shortstop now who should have an easier time maintaining defensive competence in his declining years.

Where is LTR crying about how s***** Reyes is?

not sure but I think he got lit up and banned over stuff in his "reyes sucks at baseball" thread.

True story. I always felt Reyes was an intense competitor and I liked his loose joking personality. I am sure his teammates did too. He was as fired up as anyone in a tight game and the first guy on the field to congratulate them on a big play.

He simply got buried under the weight of age and the expectations of an expensive deal vis a vis past value levels he could no longer attain.

Will read, I expect him to become a rockies fan just so he can s*** on Reyes, his level of hate is that deep

He was impossible not to like, but also made it impossible not to squirm everytime a ball got hit near him. Still an above average, talented player who would upgrade many teams, but certainly Tulo's in a different league

Personally, like most, I enjoyed his energy and I think the team will miss it. However, as a player, I was seemingly disappointed with Reyes. He wasn't/isn't a good hitter and his plummeting OBP made him a poor leadoff hitter for the Jays. While is base running is still above average, he was no longer the SB threat he once was and didn't cause havoc on the field like he once did. He's obviously prone to injury and his defense was, well, bad.

I realise he brought positive value to the team and is still good in comparison to the shortstops in baseball (a position which has taken a nose dive in terms of talent lately), but for me, he simply never seemed like a difference maker or someone you could count on. I fully acknowledge my expectations were likely too high. I just hope Tulo doesn't leave a similar sour taste in my mouth.
