Gorlak Verified Member Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I meant he wouldn't be able to make a trade at all, hence limiting damage. He is ready to overpay for something to placate the fans/try to save his job. If he has no money, then the chances of finding a rotation upgrade making 500k is very slim. Fiers might be the only realistic guy I can think of that fits that mold and who is realistic trade candidate. If he has no money, then it's more likely he stands pat, which is what he should do rather than trade more prospects to field a .500 team. This is a .500 club with arguably one of the worst rotations in baseball, a decent starter would do this club a lot of good, although I am weary of trading top prospects for a slightly more favourable role of the dice. I personally would prefer some mild upgrades and then just sign an ace in the offseason, But I think the budget will be cut next season and Rogers will bunt on signing off on a big signing.

It would be pretty dumb of Rogers to cut the budget

I completely agree. I am tired of seeing one prospect after another traded away for the hope that some average MLB player on some other team will make the difference. Me saying Mike Fiers is average is not disrespectful of Mike Fiers since an average MLB pitcher is a very good pitcher but I just don't think he is an ace that will make an impact on the BLue Jays' record.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 It would be pretty dumb of Rogers to cut the budget Agreed, but it also would have been dumb of Rogers to try and replace Beeston behind his back. The exchange rate is going to effect the budget going forward, especially since nobody is really expecting a reversal anytime soon.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 if the Jays move prospects in an effort to win this year, and then need to cut the budget, the team will be in a tough spot.... no money, and no farm

I ask this question every time someone brings this up and nobody ever has an answer. Does anyone have any insight as to how much the exchange rate actually affects payroll? I don't think it's very much but if anybody actually knows that would be good to know.

fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Big fan, he'd be a strong addition. If we could get a package of Gomez + Fiers + KRod, then we could really justify giving up long-term assets like Norris or Hoffman. I can only fap so much!!

I very much doubt the payroll will come close to what it is now next season. Rogers has increased salary and then cut it substantially before.

If the rates stay where they are it would be like a 30% tax on payroll to Rogers, A budget of 135 mil U.S. would cost Rogers about 175 mil Canadian.

MLB has contingencies in place to allow the Blue Jays to be subsidized to cover the exchange rate differential. The issue is that Paul Beeston turned the money down a number of years ago. We might have to go back hat in hand and ask for it again.

Hopefully they do, will be at a serious disadvantage if they don't.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Last time I checked, theres a difference between pitching in the MLB vs. AAA. Not really the pitching is the same, the pay checks are different! Lol
