Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 So why haven't we heard/read about this injury? Because they have no reason to give us that information? Anything they tell us, they're also telling their opponents, so why let them know that our bench is weaker than it is on paper? I don't get this idea that fans feel that they should know all the ins and outs of their teams, fans should never want to know what happens inside the clubhouse or the offices...

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Smoak is getting the Snider treatment. See, that's Cito s*** right there... One of the reasons I like Gibbons is that he doesn't do that s***. If it turns out that he actually *IS* doing that s***, then I will definitely re-evaluate.

You mentioned 2 weeks. They may have no reason to give us that information, but they have at least one reason to not handcuff their roster when a DL stint would be a bit over 2 weeks. Gibbons has openly said he thinks Navarro is the team's best pure hitter and he apparently played Goins today based on 20 AB's against Buchholz. It just seems unlikely that the reason Smoak hasn't gotten much playing time lately is because he's injured.

If he can pitch in a little bit, it's at least something. Portabello and Edwin can play 1B, but they don't have the luxury of adding someone to the 40 man to call up if he goes on the DL right now.

Come on now, a guy with that avatar can't actually believe this? They have plenty of 1B/DH already at the MLB level. Anyway, no reason to discuss further. Hopefully, you're right.

I can't honestly believe that the best fielding 1B on the team, who is a very competent switch hitting bat has had that little playing time in the past few weeks if there wasn't more to it.

If Pompey is ready, then f*** yes, bring him the f*** up! Or if Saunders is healthy... But we shouldn't be randomly adding people to the 40 man anymore, and even if we do, DSJ is the only one who might be even remotely ready at this point (and he's almost certainly not...)
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I dont know why People assume such ridiculous instead of just accepting that this manager simply does not belong in major league baseball. Its hard to see him make the same mistakes year in year out, and then having people defend him by thinking that Smoak is injured or AA is making him play Navarro Dont you guys f***ing get it, He is not a good manager. He has bad judgement, poor strategic competence, and inadequate ability to oversee the play of a professional baseball team. This isn't new. This is Izturis getting a whole year despite being a huge negative WAR player. This is Santos going out there again and again despite blowing game after game. This is Greg Zaun sitting on the bench with a .370 OBP watching Bengie Molina start against RHP. This is Josh Towers making start after start after start going for 3 homeruns a game. But you guys just dont get it.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Honestly watching this team really is like being the foolish husband whose wife cheats again and again, and he forgives her again and again thinking next year would be different. 12 years have passed like this. Jays are actually not better this year, the division just sucks for now at least. This is still just a .500 team, fortunately so is the division. The folly is us thinking that they are in something, when they are basically struggling to stay within 1 game of the division.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I get it man. Want Sandy Alomar. Thats where everything went wrong in my opinion. Farrell screwed AA, AA got fearful, and went for the safe choice. I always felt that the 2006 bluejays were good enough. Compared to the team that the Jays field now, the 2006 Bluejays would be 15-20 games over .500. That team's top 3 starters were Roy Halladay, AJ Burnett and Ted Lilly. Lilly was an effective Left hander than and Burnett was amazing. Combined with a lights out BJ Ryan in the pen, Scott Downs, Justin Spiers, Jason Frasor All they needed was f***ing minor moves and competent management. I swear Gibby lost us 5-6 games this year by waiting forever to pull Towers and Chacin. It was the most frustrating year, Greg Zaun rode the bench with a .370 OBP and Fat turd Bengie Molina would start against RHP just like Navarro does now. It was the same tom foolery back then. This franchise doesn't learn from its failures. Constantly recycling Players. Constantly Recycling Mangers. We think they are in it this year, is it because the team is better, or the division is just crap. How long before one of the other team pulls it together while Navarro starts at DH and Colabello starts in LF.

I get it, you don't really watch the games, you "feel" the games, you say a bunch of words and you rail against the manager because you know, deep down, that you could do a better job than that "bum". It's a really weird instinct that is shared by a vast swath of the fan bases of every team in professional sports, but it unites that group in a powerful way. Goddammit, you all say, fire the bum and the team will become greater than the sum of its parts! If only that one buffoon at the helm was replaced by me, or at least someone who thinks like me, this team would do great things! Gibbons is terrible at his job, because *I* question his moves, *I* would do things differently! *I* am 100% sure that I know what is happening in the dugout, and *I* could interpret all of those things into a winning strategy. Once the manager is fired, someone more like me will take charge and we will win it all! *I* am the best ever, and only my leadership can bring this team into the promised land! FIRE THE BUMS, NO MATTER WHO THEY BE!

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Well, he did bench Rasmus last September for no real on-field reason. Yeah, 'cause his boss told him to. If your boss tells you to do things and you don't do them, you lose your job no matter how competent you are.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 How about GIbbons is terrible at his job, because he has managed a thousand games and has a record below .500 Joe Maddon is regarded by many as one of the best managers in baseball. He owns a career winning percentage of .518, you'd think a manager that is so highly regarded would have a record better than just barely surpassing the .500 mark. Odd.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 A manager's job is to generate the best results based on the assets provided to him. Just like any management whether its a business or a sports team, their job is the most important because they have to use the assets to generate the greatest return. The current bluejays core is a top 5 talented team in all of baseball, as shown by their best run differential. If that isn't translating to more wins, then its the guys putting those assets to use.

Odd. on a 1000 game scale .518 vs. 490 is worth 40 to 45 wins. Thats almost 8 wins a year So do you think 8 games better means anything?

How in the actual hell you got that the difference between them is 40 to 45 wins (WTF), and that is somehow 8 wins a year? ??????????????????????
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Players Gibbons under uses/mismanages Liam Hendricks- one of our best relievers statistically is being used in low leverage situations, gets the hook early even when he's getting babiped. Brett Cecil- was our best reliever coming into this year and wasn't given the closers job until a month in. Has struggled admittedly, but the stats are still there for him. He is now getting outs in lower leverage situations. Devon Travis- batting 8th and 9th for some stupid redneck reason. Justin Smoak- is this guy a ghost? He seemed like a pretty good player when he was playing, now Gibbons has no use for him even though he's our best option at first base. With a banged up Edwin he should have been the only option at 1st base instead he's not an option at all.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 What the f*** did I just read? 51.8% of 1000 is 518, 49.0% of 1000 is 490. 518 - 490 = 28. Wow, I didn't even do the math, I just looked at the point he was trying to make and said "yeah, that's a stupid point." After you did the math it's an even stupider point. THIS MAN CLAIMS TO BE AN ACCOUNTANT AND HIS MATH IS THAT BAD. I will not hire you to be my accountant, RealAccountant (unless I need a money-man for this interesting little musical love letter to Hitler that I have been mulling about... Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Players Gibbons over uses/mismanages Miguel Castro- Threw him in the fire and he got burned. I don't necessarily blame him for throwing him in the fire but he left him in those high leverage spots way to long when the metrics didn't back him up. Unless Gibbons is an era guy.... Ryan Goins- Was playing LF tonight to get his bat in the lineup...just a ridiculous thing to do. Chris Collabelo- He got hot as hell but his butcherness in the field has left him near replacement and starting to cost this team wins. Gibbons will give this guy starts because he likes his character. Danny Valencia- Valencia has more plate appearances against righties then lefties and there were a couple times earlier in the year where Valencia was called upon to face a righty as a PH instead of Smoak which is mind boggling. Dioneer Navarro- Backup catcher who has seen tons of DH time. Gibbons loves this guy, this guy also has a 76wRC+ this year. Why do you love this guy gibbons? Bo Schultz- Hasn't been good in the minors, hasn't been good in the majors. Gibbons entrenches him in a high leverage role after he has a couple survival outings in mop up duty.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 How hasn't Bo Schultz been good? From what I've seen he's been fine. Say what you want about Colabello's defence, but his offence is one of the reasons why the past month has been generally good for the Jays.

I think Castro should have been in A ball to start the season, but it wasn't Gibbons that had him up... He was good for a bit, then he got less good and was removed from high leverage situations. You can argue that he should have had a shorter leash, but you can say that Gibbons stuck with him for months, maybe 2 or 3 games longer than he should have, tops. Goins was in LF because we don't have a LF, and the other option was Zeke... Portabello is still hitting. He wasn't in the field today, AND we don't have a f***ing left fielder right now. He still has a 147 wRC+, and is sitting at 0.4 WAR in limited playing time. Valencia is probably one of the better fielders on the team, I have no issue with him being used... Navarro is s***, I can't really justify him being used much. Schultz has 0.2 WAR in 12 innings this year. Can't really fathom how someone would have had any issue with him in any way. I still think Smoak is hurt, so...
