Statman Verified Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 (edited) He has been our worst pitcher this year with over 10 starts. Knuckleball and fastball velocity continuing to drop since leaving the Mets. A measly 1.5 K/BB. The highest home run to fly ball ratio of his career at 13%. 4.85 xFIP. Over 5 ERA. 1.39 WHIP and a whopping -0.2 WAR His BABIP of 0.273 is in the norm so he hasn't been unlucky. Just bad. This is not even getting into the harder things to quantify that hurt this team like the roster construction that is needed around him (or what management thinks they need), the negative impact it has on the offensive side of Russell Martins game as well as DAT clubhouse culture. Josh Donaldson who is one of the greatest players off all-time to play for the Jays has one locker and this guy gets two. I don't get it. Edited July 5, 2015 by Statman
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 I will be kinda sad to see him go, for the simple reason that I will no longer be able to say "at least ONE player on the Jays is older than me!" *sigh*
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 I figured it'd eventually get to this point. I'll still give him an ovation in his last start for the team. Dude revitalized his career at a point when most guys would probably just throw in the towel, and then went on to have a handful of fantastic seasons and even took home a CY. Pretty cool, IMO. It's not his fault his skills declined in his late-30s and an overeager GM paid out the nose to acquire and hype him through the roof. Dickey might be my favourite Jay who I don't enjoy watching in the slightest. A dubious distinction, yeah, but I think Dickey is a pretty standup guy.

And then...ugh.

I keep thinking this year will turn around and resemble at least his first couple marginal yrs but it doesn't look like it. Regardless he gave us a good start baring the news of his father's passing and continues to try to be a professional...
Smokey Verified Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 "It comes down to how you evaluate R.A. and that is going to define the results of this trade. We see him as a front-of-the-rotation starter, He's won the Cy Young and he's pitched like one the past three years. He doesn't get the credit or respect he deserves because of his age and because of what he does throw. It's so rare. "There's just so much overwhelming evidence and data that points to him continuing to have this success. He's gotten better every single year. His walk rate has gotten better, his strikeout rate, he's had ERAs below three two of the last three years. "Right now we feel we're so close to contention that this was a deal we needed to make because it's not just about one season. This allows us to put a contending team together for an extended run." http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img853/698/rvcl.gif
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 ultimately that trade will be Alex 's downfall. One he will never recover from
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 Do you guys think its possible that AA will demote Hutch and/or put Dickey on waivers? As soon as he makes a deal?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 ^ No BC we don't have better options. Unless he gets multiple starters like the As last year Dickey would still get claimed
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 Hutch to the pen? Dickey Dfa, please! Wait Thole your gone too! Lol
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 ^ No BC we don't have better options. Unless he gets multiple starters like the As last year Dickey would still get claimed AA doesn't have the balls like Cherington did when he sent down underperforming Craig and Kelly.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 AA doesn't have the balls like Cherington did when he sent down underperforming Craig and Kelly. Kelly is hardly a fair comparison since he's a young guy. I could bring up Romero but who knows. I do agree though that Dickey won't be taken out of the rotation.

I do agree though that Dickey won't be taken out of the rotation. Well I was comparing Kelly mostly with Hutchison. As for Dickey, I feel pretty much just like how we approached BJ Ryan. A good couple of years, then suddenly lost it and was surprisingly (to me, at least) DFA'd. Dickey could be the same, but I think there will be an NL team that will claim him and we may work something out.

Here's something crazy, Dickey and Thole for Colon+
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 Buerhle would still fit that category for me, but he's gone next year in all likelyhood too. And then...ugh. I'm a year older than Buerhle, which is f***ing terrifying to say (at least I don't LOOK my age...) ^ No BC we don't have better options. Unless he gets multiple starters like the As last year Dickey would still get claimed Dickey at $12M having this kind of season does not get claimed on waivers.
fireballW Verified Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 If he keeps performing like this he should be sent away. It is a billion dollar industry, if we were out of it then do the right thing and let him finish the year but we aren't. He could improve though... maybe... please. I think Castro should be starting the second half on the Jays. better than the rest of what we have and will have his innings up to go into a starting role next year.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 ^ Half the season is over. Guaranteed Dickey gets claimed The right play is to get rid of Navarro bring Thole back and see if that does anything to jump start Dickey
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 ^ Half the season is over. Guaranteed Dickey gets claimed The right play is to get rid of Navarro bring Thole back and see if that does anything to jump start Dickey Why would anyone (other than Dave Stewart) claim a below replacement level pitcher that will cost you ~$6M for half a year? Nobody is claiming Dickey because he sucks donkeyballs, not because it's going to be relatively cheap to get him.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 Isn't only 6 mil if he's traded I thought if he's Dfa'd it's only half mill to claim and we are on the hook for the balance?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 Actually if Dickey was with another team, and was waived I wouldn't mind AA claiming him. I think thats the sort of thing a smart GM would do. Dickey could improve in the NL or out west. However really need to get rid of Fatty, and bring up Thole to catch Dickey. Look at Dickey's starts when Thole was catching, some of them were borderline average and doable. Get the fat f*** off the team, and see if Thole can Dickey to be at least decent. We know Navarro shouldn't be playing over Smoak anymore. So what is the point of having Navarro on the team. If he cant be traded for an asset at this point, that isn't going to change in a few weeks.
LTR Verified Member Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 AA needs to do something soon. Need 2 starters sooner than later.

No, if he was claimed on waivers, the other team would take on his contract. If he passes through waivers and is released, the team that signs him would only have to pay pro-rated league minimum for him. I'm not suggesting that, I'm suggesting putting him on waivers, if he's claimed, great, if he's not then we keep him and do whatever with him. Think Alex Rios when he was claimed by the White Sox... The claimed him not because they wanted him, but because they were worried another team would get him... They worked on a "trade", and JPR said "nah, you just take him and his salary..." and he was gone.

CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 I just read Dickey's book this weekend ("Wherever I Wind Up") ... was never in a rush to pick it up haha ... amazing that he won the Cy Young after his book came out on his life story.

He has a new one out too but since I didn't like the first one that much, I probably won't bother.
