Blue Jays Interested In Francisco Rodriguez

By Charlie Wilmoth [June 20, 2015 at 9:16am CDT]

The Blue Jays have contacted the Brewers about closer Francisco Rodriguez, Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun reports. The Jays are also seeking a starter.

That the Jays would have interest in Rodriguez is no surprise. With the Brewers off to a 25-44 start, K-Rod seems likely to be on the market this summer, and the Blue Jays have been connected to other top relievers, like Jonathan Papelbon and Tyler Clippard.

Rodriguez is in the midst of a strong season in which he’s posted a 1.13 ERA, 9.8 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9. His peripherals don’t quite support such an outstanding ERA, but he remains one of the game’s more reliable closers, and he could surely bolster the Jays’ bullpen, which is currently headed by Brett Cecil, Roberto Osuna, Liam Hendriks, Aaron Loup and Steve Delabar. Rodriguez makes $3.5MM this season and will receive $7.5MM ($2MM of which will be deferred) next season, with a $6MM option or $2MM buyout for 2017.

@TaoofStieb: I would rather have Papelbon than K-Rod. It's not close.

I think as much as I hate Pig f***er, I agree with Tao.

All things equal including salary I'd take papelbon. But if the cost of prospects is lower I'll take Krod. He makes way less money and is still getting great results even though he has lost some velocity. Gets a ton of whiffs on his changeup.

If it's pig f***er (love that name for him) for Norris and K-Rod for a bag of balls, I give me K-Rod.

If PF only costs money, than I agree

Well as often is the case with the Jays, It comes down to money and K-Rod is the cheaper option both in terms of dollars and what it will cost to get him. I wouldn't however be looking at adding him as "adding a closer" as much as adding another good right handed pen arm that can get strikeouts in tough situations late in games.

Why didn't the Jays just sign K-Rod when they had the chance in the off-season?

The answer to this is K-Rod obviously because Amaro won't trade Paps for anything short of three top 10 prospects.

Landing a "closer" should be a secondary priority for a team that has a rotation of Hutch, Buehrle, Dickey and a couple of band aids that probably won't even last 'til August.

I think the Jays know the needs of the rotation and will address it before the deadline. If they can get an upgrade at the back end of the pen now though there is no reason not to.

Hes not K-Rod anymore. But I wouldn't hate him.

K-Rod is still pretty good though. He's actually carrying his best xFIP- (73) since 2006 and has a 14.2% SwStr%. Those are very good marks. He reinvented himself after losing the velocity.

I'm actually not sure if that is true. They have a history of failing to recognize what the team's real needs are. Last year everyone but Gruber realized that the 2B position needed upgrading and they chose to do nothing. I wouldn't be surprised if they viewed Sanchez and Estrada as viable options down the stretch.

How about adding a starter and putting Sanchize in the pen? Wouldn't that kill two birds with one stone?

Amazing to look at how he ditched the slider and started throwing a changeup and is getting the same great results even though he's lost 4 MPH off the fastball.

Yes he's become a totally different pitcher. K-Rod's changeup is a knockout pitch and he puts it exactly where he wants to.

Its been documented that the Jays have been looking for a starter by the media. With Sanchez injury it became even more obvious.

The lack of fastball might catch up with him though. He probably gives up a few more HR because of it but he still is a great pitcher.

Yes, the media! That solves that.

Either way, they need to fix the leak in the ceiling before redecorating the furniture.

He probably doesn't though. His ground ball rate this year is above his career average and he's only given up one home run all season. Many relievers are successful using a 90 mph fastball and excellent offspeed stuff.

It's counter-intuitive for so many that a pitcher topping out at 90MPH would generate whiffs. All they have to do is look at Estrada and how his changeup makes his fastball seem faster than it is though he does give up dingers.
