TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 I'd give up nothing for a wild card spot. If a wild card spot was the realistic best case scenario, I'd either stand pat or trade guys like Buehrle to a contending team.

That'z crazy considering we haven't had a whiff of play-offs in 20 years. For a WC spot I'd give up Norris or Hoffman, but not both, etc.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 For a WC spot, I'd stand pat, too. For the division, tough to say. I still wouldn't give up the farm, but I'd be open to moving pieces as long as the return was more than one season of value (like Hamels). We should strive to be the Cardinals. Make the playoffs every year. I don't want to make any short-term moves. Hamels would be the only one with long-term implications, so I'd bend a little if he were involved, but for a two month rental, forget it.

I bet there's a lot of fans like LTR, who are willing to mortgage the future just for potentially 1 playoff game. Personally, I'd rather stay the course with the objective being sustainable winning....however, that said, perhaps I do underestimate how difficult it is to sustain winning...an interesting debate. If we were already a WC team, I'd give up Sanchez or Hoffman to get better. I'm not willing to move Norris or Hoffman just to become a WC team.
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 LOL... The Royals & Giants were both wild card seeds that made it to the WS just last year... but f*** a wild card spot.

I don't think giving up one of Norris / Hoffman is mortgaging the future? It's possible neither even pan out as effective major league starters.

And did either of them mortgage the future and acquire a bunch of rental players to get there? No, they got hot at the right time, caught some luck and ended up in the WS. If you're going to point that out - you also have to point out the A's who got the rental players and went down in flames.

Isn't there the same possibility that they both pan out and then you did mortgage a bright future? Either way, it's asset management man. It will take awhile for everyone to know if they will pan out - in the meantime, they have immense value.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 A big time acquisition likely results in surplus value due to the feel of going for it wat

That is actually a good counter-point, they have immense value but that may not last so you could but hurting the future by not trading them. And I said trade one, not both, maybe the guy you trade doesn't pan out anyway.

For a WC spot I'd give up Norris or Hoffman, but not both, etc. I don't care. That means nothing to me. Not having made the playoffs in a long time shouldn't automatically raise the value of a s***** 1 game play-in. It's still a s***** 1 game play-in. I'd rather have guys that give the team a better shot at making the playoffs for a longer period of time, and going deep into those playoffs if they ever get there, rather than throw away players who could become very valuable assets for a one game crapshoot. On the other hand, if you're talking about a realistic shot at the division title, that's where I believe the team should be making some big moves, for players with some control. LOL... The Royals & Giants were both wild card seeds that made it to the WS just last year... but f*** a wild card spot. And the Athletics were another wild card seed who went all in, traded away very valuable long-term assets, acquired two "aces", and have nothing but a garbage 2015 season to show for it.

Most teams who win the WS got hot at the right time but you can't have that chance without being there, history is already showing any team who makes the post season can find success. Regardless it's a pretty silly fantasy to try to say would you give up xxxx player for a WC spot. I probably would if there was such thing as a guaranteed WC spot in July.
