jayswin11 Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 So over the Allstar break a team calls AA and says we need a SP and a backup catcher, we'd like Buehrle and Navarro. What would you like for them. AA says I'll give them to you for a bag of balls but you have to take Reyes too. I say make the deal if you're the Jays. Today is a perfect example why the jays will not back playoffs and there it zero sense in trading prospects to try and make it. Pitching and defense is just not good enough to contend this year.

jayswin11 Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 i guess that would depend on what time of prospects you could get in a deal for just Bautista. If the payroll was unlimited of course I'd say no but since we can assume that it's not and the return for Batista alone wasn't amazing then if have to say yes although it is a tougher decision. It still leaves you with a lineup up Travis Martin Donaldson Encaracion-DH Colabello-lf Smoak 1b Pillar Saunders/Carerra/Pompey/new 4th of guy Goins Def is improved and perhaps not a great offensive drop
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I would classify the offensive drop from Bautista to Colabello as being great.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I would classify the offensive drop from Bautista to Colabello as being great. So you're telling me a BABIP over .4 isn't sustainable?
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 So you're telling me a BABIP over .4 isn't sustainable? 2015 and we've still got people being fooled by a 0.420 BABIP.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 "Defense is improved" yet you have LOLabello in LF. That's not possible. No point in trading Reyes with Bautista because the Jays need talent more than they need salary relief. Bautista alone gets them better talent.

I think Gibbons truly believes you have to score 5+ runs a game to have a chance to win a game in the AL east. Few times this year he has put a lineup out that is defense first. The lineup construction is pretty horrendous, even today hitting Valencia 7th is huge mistake...I have been done with Gibbons for a while and hope a move is made quickly, the man is outdated.
TilsonBritoFan Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 what if a team really wants Bautista (even with the bad shoulder) and they'd take Reyes contract too in return for just an experienced 4th outfielder type ... would you make that deal? I would trade Edwin for basically nothing if it allowed us to shed Reyes. This team may technically be in the race, but they aren't getting over the hump and do not deserve to win. There are now too many other teams to outperform with Boston in the race. I've seen these Jays before and its not happening. Its time to blow it up before its too late for us to get anything for these guys. Ideally here's what I would do if I were in control, and I'd be BUSY at the deadline: -Package Reyes along with Edwin - any team willing to absorb the entire horrid contract can have Eddy for free. If there are multiple takers then the best package gets him. If there are no takers, well we may have to eat a bit of contract then. Uggh. -Shop Bautista. Only trade him if the offer is good enough. If not, wait until offseason when his shoulder is better, he might put up better numbers in the 2nd half to boost value. He is not the one to lead this team, he needs to go, he can bring us a lot in return. -Trade Collabello for whatever you can get. -Find out the market for Donaldson. Not looking to deal him but if the right offer was out there you do it. He's going to be 30 next year and may be past his prime when my rebuilt team will be ready to contend. Ideally you get 2 stud future star young position players on the cusp for him. If not then keep him, maybe he can be the vet to lead this team when its ready, in that case lock him up for 5 years. The more likely scenario is I lock him up for 5 years. Lots of payroll room now. -Trade Buehrle. -If anyone will take Dickey, trade him just for the sake of shedding salary and opening a roster spot. If not, DFA him. -Call up Norris & Boyd, to join the rotation. Lets give these pitchers some rope and see what they can do. -Call up Pompey, let him play the rest of the season in LF, lets see what he can do. -Start looking to sign Smoak to a 2-3 year deal...might be able to get him to bite on a 3 year, $15 million deal. I've seen enough to let him run with 1st. If it turns out he can't handle it, $5 million per year for a solid backup 1B/bat on the bench isn't the worst thing. If he finds his stride like I think he can with regular playing time it could be a massive bargain. -Fire Gibby. This is certainly not all his fault but we need a fresh face. This team has failed in 3 kicks at the can on this under his watch. And Gibby has failed in the past with a good team in his first go-around. He may not be a bad manager, but he isn't a great one either - he just isn't able to bring it all together. Good guy, but not the one to lead this team. -Keep on drafting and developing young pitchers like they've been doing. Rebuild properly for a few years, get a high draft pick by sucking big time in the 2nd half this year.
jayswin11 Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Agree with everything you suggest except for shopping Donaldson
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 You got to be careful with Edwin, he's an elite bat just having a down year to injury. Basically he's quite valuable in the long run.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 No-one will take Reyes contract, No-one will trade any value for Mushroom, Donaldson stays, Smoak might take 5 million for 2 yrs, no way would i pay him 3/15. and fire Gibby and move AA out of GM. Keep him with organisation.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 No fire sales. We're still within contention, and Bautista/EE still have a year of control remaining. And despite his terrible D, Reyes still is good with the bat.. he just needs to move to another position (OF?) Collabello is still controllable for a while.. but should be DHing, and we should avoid the temptation to get rid of him until he proves that he is worthless. Donaldson's not going anywhere, as we still have 3 years left of control, as he's about to hit his prime. Neither Norris or Boyd are MLB ready.. didn't you watch them pitch earlier this season? I sure did.. Calling up Pompey is a tough call at the moment. Smoak isn't a free agent until 2017, so we already control him for 2-3 years. As for Gibbons.. can we wait until season's end? What you suggest could be said for many other teams not leading the division or wild card.. most are trailing 3-4 games off the Twins and Astros, along with the Yanks, Royals and Angels.

flafson Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 And Bautista/EE still have options for next year. They should resign Bautista.. but EE should be considered for trade. Bautista and EE are 10/5 players, meaning they can't be traded without their consent.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 No-one will take Reyes contract, under any circumstances? would any of the big spending clubs take on the entire remainder of Reyes contract PLUS BAUTISTA for just a Travis Snider type of outfielder coming back? and would you do that as Jays GM if Rogers promised you that the team's budget on payroll subsequently wouldn't be going down?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 The Jays are buying, there will not be a firesale, folks need to get this in their head, not happening.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 The Jays are buying, there will not be a firesale, folks need to get this in their head, not happening. I agree with you. (I'm just throwing out the Reyes/Bautista hypothetical because some are so eager to run Reyes out of town.)
TilsonBritoFan Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 The Jays are buying, there will not be a firesale, folks need to get this in their head, not happening. I also agree with you. I just think its incredibly stupid that we're going to be buying. The clock will be set back a number of years again when they fall flat on their faces. Even if by some miracle they squeaked into the playoffs there is no way this team is winning a championship, it takes pitching and a more well rounded offense to win in the playoffs. This team either scores 10 runs when facing crummy pitching or 1 or 2 runs when facing good pitching. In the playoffs you face good pitching every game. I want to see this team torn down and built properly, without a bunch of stupid trades made 2-3 years too early like we did in 2012. I am very frustrated. VERY.
