Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 by replacing him defensively maybe he will get upset and retire early
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Just heard the Davidi stuff: "If you don't trust your SS to catch the ball in the 9th inning, you don't trust him to catch it in the 1st inning". Yeesh. he's not trusted
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Toronto broadcasters are so dumb in the way they are circling the wagons around Reyes. Defensive replacements are a thing. It's not a new piece of baseball strategy. It can be implemented. The more they make a mountain out of this molehill, the more it becomes a big deal when it really shouldn't be.
labadee Verified Member Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Anyone listening to Kevin Barker on baseball central right now? Oh my f***ing god... He was terrible. Saying his superstardom meant he deserves 1-9. WHAT IF THEY NEED HIS BAT LATER?? THat's not even what they were arguing. Reyes had the last out in the top of the 8th, if the lead held up we wouldn't need him.. if they bat around in the 9th, they wont need him. STFU baker. He wouldnt have a job if it wasn't for his wife
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 he's not trusted Did Rogers send out a memo to its media minions to protect Reyes Tooth and Nail, Wtf!

Amen, its done routinely in baseball with very good players. Barker is painful. I like Reyes offensively and think he can have an important 2nd half for us. But handing out the mantra that Reyes,by mere osmosis, is an offensive juggernaut that supersedes his D issues glosses over the reality of 2015 Reyes. It isn't 2011 and he hasn't been very good at leadoff offensively in 2015( even if one factors out the time played with injury). A 4.5% BB rate?

glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Someone should write a homophobic slur in Reyes' eyeblack when he's not looking. Rogers might force a trade then.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 well, of course, the "voice of the Blue Jays" has been critical of Reyes. also, I can't recall an everyday starting shortstop in MLB (let alone a name like Reyes) ever being taken out late in a game for a defensive replacement (unless it's for reasons of rest) ... doesn't make it right ... but it would be unique. It's pretty rare for a shortstop. Of course, you don't usually keep a guy who can't field at a premium position like shortstop in the first place. More often it's done for a first baseman. You bring in a Doug Mientkiewicz type for a butcher. That being said, there's no reason it can't be implemented with a little communication. The team talked about Reyes being rested at DH this year but a better plan would have been to tell Reyes that he'd get time off with a lead late. It would have been so much easier to do this before the big errors in key moments. Now it just looks bad. We knew of Reyes's defensive issue beforehand. We knew that this is the kind of thing that Goins could be good for. It didn't have to come to this.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 So the Jays tried to sign Phillippe Aumont after his DFA with the Phils. He turned it down and joined the NCBL (essentially the Men's league in Ottawa). He just didn't want to play anymore. The National team convinced him to not give up and he's starting the 3rd game of the Pan Am games. If he performs well in the Pan Am games I expect the Jays to give him a minor league deal. That's amazing. I have a bunch of friends who play in the NCBL for the Nepean Brewers.

ColdPint Verified Member Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 About a month or so ago Howarth missed a weeks worth of radio broadcasts with the excuse being that he was "sick". Timing wise this came a game or two after his Reyes rant which leads me to believe he was actually suspended because of his comments. The Jays org have been known to do it before.

It crossed my mind for a couple of seconds too ... but I think Jerry (at his age and with his years of service in the booth) would've just quit rather than quietly accept being disciplined.

Easy there buddy, you're talking about the 88 wRC+ SS offensive specialist... we can't afford to remove that bat from the line-up!

C'mon, the Brewers have been one of the best teams in that league for the better part of the last decade. They're getting a little long in the tooth though.
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Speaking of Brewers, what do you guys think of Gerardo Parra as a trade target for a left fielder? 2x gold glover and he's hitting his pants off at the moment, you have to assume Brewers are moving him.
