Hoffman will be our best starter later this season

I wish the thoughts that rumble in your mind about the Jays came to reality....the team would be winning 120 games every year...

Not hard to be the best pitcher on this staff

I said an injured Bautista for and extended Cueto....u wouldnt do that...so much dumn

Hoffman will be our best starter later this season better than Stroman so no I wouldnt trade him cause we dont have to

Nothing against Hoffman, but how often does a prospect who hasn't pitched in professional baseball is so hyped about and actually able to deliver elite like career?

Probably because he has elite level stuff and and an aplha dog makeup. If he was a Rays prospect this forum would be swimming in jizz.

For sure, but to say he's worth more than Bautista is a stretch, to say the least. Doesn't mean that he's not going to be up there, but a lot of water needs to run through the river before someone can claim something like that.

Cueto doesn't fix the other three turns in the rotation that are black holes of s***.

We all knew this going into the season though. We had two aging number 3 starters another 3/4 in Hutch and two rookies. No closer, no depth in the pen or the rotation.

We have to just take it on the chin this year and hope. Even if made the playoffs we have no ace and any truly good ace pitcher will shutout or shut down our offense.

Next year looks better if Stroman comes back and does what he was doing - have Hutch as a reasonable number 4/5 Dickey as the number 5 starter and find two upper rotation starters (with luck an internal candidate with more experience - Norris perhaps). Gotta keep the bats - right now they're the only thing keeping this team from being a complete and utter embarrassment.

Why even watch baseball anymore. Just check out the stats after the game.

Thanks, bro. You just saved me 3 hours a night.

lol so much dumb.

Watching a particular game for entertainment purposes and watching it to evaluate a player are two completely separate things.

They are. Which is why you can't solely use a spreadsheet to evaluate talent. The fact that this needs to be said is shocking.

Sending a scout to verify there's nothing wrong with him = a good thing.

Sending a scout to evaluate a 5-10 year player based off of one game = not a good thing.

I just don't get that you guys don't think there's value in seeing a player live and using that along with the numbers rather than just using the numbers.

Your eyes can only fool you. It's better to use the data in large samples to gather a opinion on a player. The exception to this would be young prospects/high school players ect.

Because it isn't always better to have more information. Confounding years of reliable major league data with first-hand scouting reports isn't necessary most of the time, and could be harmful if the guys acting on the information overestimate the relative value of scouting vs. major league data. Scouts are charlatans.

You can absolutely use a spreadsheet to evaluate established major league veterans,. The only players scouts should really ever touch or have an input ln are minor leaguers ans rookies/sophmorres. A GM could really just watch film of the start and look for any changes to his previously deliveries.

Again though this is for major league players with a goof sample size to evaluate them against other major league talent. If the player for argument sake was Michael Lorenzan, I'd want my team to send a couple of guys down there

And if a scout is already there why not make some notes and see if what you see with your eyes jives with what's on paper.

Is this not just verifying there's nothing wrong with him?

Unless you're arguing that if Cueto has a bad outing the scouts should have second thoughts or something. Short of a health/injury report, I'm not really sure what a scout can shed light on with regards to Cueto. If he was coming off the DL or pitching in extended ST or something, you'd want someone to verify that yes he looks as good as he reasonably should. But other than that? Johnny Cueto is Johnny Cueto.
