Pretty disrespectful to take the Lord's name in vain when 75% of this message board is religious. Nerd.

Collabello's stay is likely to be short. Tolleson cleared waivers and was outrighted to Buffalo. Expect him to be re-purchased and rejoin the Jays by Friday.

But to be entirely fair, in all likelihood Jonathan Diaz is actually a sub-replacement level player so if Goins ever gets hurt, Donaldson at SS would probably lead to a superior arrangement of position players than just plugging the nominal backup SS Diaz in there.

why was Diaz called up instead of Kawasaki?

Posted
Well s*** if Donaldson is a viable shortstop then why not give him more starts there now while you're a it? A lineup with Valencia at third and Donaldson at short would just demolish left-handed pitching and then Goins comes in for late inning defense (the role he's best suited for anyways).

Donaldson is a good fielder but his arm accuracy is suspect. In that scenario I'd worry about him trying to get to balls on the outskirts of his range and botching a throw. Is Valencia a better 3rd baseman than Donaldson?

This whole Donaldson to SS thing reminds me of when we had Glaus on this team and for whatever reason he had to play 1 or 2 innings at SS someone help jog my memory....

Probably because they didn't expect his stay to be long and the front office didn't want to risk losing Muni but cared less about Diaz.

I was thinking about that this morning and whittled it down to two possibilities: 1) they wanted a more "pure" SS, whereas Kawasaki is more of a 2B, or 2) racism.

Leaning option 2.

Yes DFAing Muni was probably a concern but whether it should have been is I think a question worthy of debate. I mean what is the point of even having Kawa if not to plan for a Reyes injury? If you're afraid to use him in such a scenario because you might lose him then there's a bit of a paradox at play. On the flip side, you could say that a short term injury to Reyes isn't really what you're planning for. You're planning for a long term one and that hasn't happened yet (holy f*** is that ever a depressing but quite possilby valid rationale for not calling up Kawasaki).

Seems like Collabello is here just to make this one start and then Tolleson to replace him. I actually don't mind the move now that it's all becoming clear. Scrapping some kind of backup ss plan together for a single partial game at most is no big deal. I might have timed this a bit differently though to give Bautista the day off before the off day but that's without knowing how he feels.

For all we know Reyes won't be out much longer. If he was going to be out a month or more I can understand bringing up Muni because you could always option Goins to keep him on the roster, but if Reyes is only going to down for a couple weeks I wouldn't want to risk losing Muni, who is versatile, and while maybe not a great hitter, makes pitchers throw a lot of pitches, for only a couple games.

Everything points that way.

He definitely did, I think it was more then two innings. 8 games started, 3 complete games and 55 1/2 innings during 2006

Yeah, we were decimated at SS and he had experience in the minors.

Wasn't it also so we could get whoever was DHing into the line up in interleague games? Hillenbrand at 3B, Glaus at SS and Overbay at 1B is how it went I think.

Damn that 2006 team was good. The only hole in the line up was McDonald and Russ Adams off the bench.

That's not even a bad bench...:P

Was this during the Adventures of Russ Adams epidemic????

Reed Johnson (.390 OBP), Gregg Zaun, Russ Adams and Eric Hinske. It was a nice, nice bench.

It's a shame we only had 3 good starters that year and Burnett only made 21 starts.

It really makes you wonder what might've been with 2007 if we could've had Lilly and Meche with Halladay and Burnett and one of McGowan, Marcum or Litsch who were all pretty good that year.
