The payroll is probably up if you use Canadian dollars.

They must have a currency hedge in place though, right? A persistent weak Canadian dollar would hurt us down the road (and likely force an increase in ticket prices), but it may have only a small impact on this year's payroll.

However you slice it, if they kept the same payroll it would have a much higher cost.

137,000,000.00 USD = 172,123,668.54 CAD

That's over $20MM more than last year if they kept payroll identical before moving money around.

They for sure have a currency hedge, but the dollar going down still hurts at least a bit. It would be interesting if they discussed this topic more openly.

No, no it isn't.

They hedge all MLB income. Everything's in American dollars when it comes to payroll.

Yeah of course, but how much does the dollar affect how much the Jays spend on payroll? Most of Rogers revenue is in CAD, but they must have plenty of assets in US dollars. Do you or anyone here have any insight? This is something I've been wondering for a while.

I would assume they've hedged off some currency risk, but moving forward the lower dollar will be problematic. That said, they are shedding more than 40 mil in Salary with Buehrle, Romero, Navarro, Izturis and Dickie(potentially) coming off the books which can likely be better re-invested for next year.

Next year is interesting because they'll need a boatload of payroll space for 2017 when Bautista, Edwin, Martin, Reyes, and Donaldson will cost almost $100M.

The pitching staff, will be making peanuts, in comparison, Rogers has the money, mate.

Yesterday Sportsnet has a video piece in the matter. They said in the past MLB contributed 5mil USD every year to limit the damage from the currency exchange.

Bees ton was also the one that stopped those payments.

Reyes' deal expires after 2016 no?

I agree...Travis, Pompey, Stro, Hutch, Sanchez, Norris, Castro, Osuna and Hoffman in the waiting is a lot of very cheaply priced talent with Donaldson and Saunders being paid less than market value.

Don't you guys remember the state of the franchise, Beeston said the dollar drop won't effect payroll this year and it's definitely going up.

That said AA should have 12.5-15M to work with over the course of the season.

US payroll down 10M from last year = CAD payroll up 10M from last year.

100% it affects the Blue Jays, just a matter of how much.

Beeston said it would be up in USD. He confirmed this in Jan/Feb on PTS, so currency does not matter with regard to his promise. There's lots of time to add salary over the season, so we can't call Beeston a liar just yet, but if holes persist and/or more are created by the failure of the 6 rookies to properly contribute, then they better be spending that promised excess money to fill those holes.

Im still pissed about the Prado non-trade last year, and if a piece like that is available this year, and the Jays don't acquire it, then we know Beeston is full of s*** (which many of us highly suspect already).

I couldn't care less whether the payroll goes up or down over last year. As long as they get value out of their moves, then it's alright.

AA has not been a great judge of value/$ at the major league level...so thats why the fan base is always clamoring for more payroll.

I'd have to see a list of good/bad value/$ moves to get a better idea as to whether he's been great or not. And it depends what fans you're talking about, the ones who think ownership should spend 180M on payroll because they're "the richest owners in MLB"? If it's those fans, then I don't care for their opinions.

I think he's done pretty well actually - particularly with player extensions. Other than Reyes and some smaller 1-2 year deals, he's gotten a pretty good bang for his buck on player contracts.

His track record with trades is a whole different story though.

Cueto would be Nucking Futs.

What would be a competitive (and realistic) offer the Blue Jays could put together for either? Not gonna happen at this point. We probably trade for a #3-#4 guy.
