guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Still hoping they add a veteran to the pen. Not happy with Castro and Osuna making the team. But I'm glad Travis won and job and they won't waste time with players like Izturis who is just simply hot garbage. 8 man pen is a bit of a piss off but I think we are going need a lot of innings from the pen this year so it might end up being useful sometimes. i'd rather get a legit starter and just toss sanchez in the pen
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 We have pitching depth but if/when Reyes gets hurt we are screwed.

BTS Community Moderator Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Both scouts and projections think Travis will be better, Pretty bold to bet against that. I don't know that it would be bold to bet against a 1.5-2 win rookie season. I can see taking the over though.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Just had a wonderful thought - what is throwing Osuna and Castro onto the big league club is all part of the long game? In this summer's international free agent signing period we already know that the Blue Jays and Dodgers are both planning to spend past the limit. Vlad Jr. alone will take the Jays over theirs and prohibit them from signing any big players in the next two seasons, but beyond him it will be hard (impossible) for Toronto to compete with LA on any other players unless the Jays already have some verbal agreement with them. Toronto just can't offer these kids nearly as much money as the Dodgers can. BUT, maybe they can offer them the hope that they will reach the big leagues 2-3 years before they would if they sign with LA. The quicker a kid reaches the big leagues, the quicker they reach free agency. Osuna and Castro, if they stick, will both reach free agency at around 26 years old - an almost unheard of age to be a free agent, and a factor that would definitely boost their market value by a large amount. They would be marketing their entire physical prime! Maybe the quick Osuna and Castro promotions are on one hand about competing this year, but on another hand about trying to attract a f***ing boat load of 16/17 year old Latin American talent this summer. Especially for the kids who are in the moderate to small bonus range, the glimmer of hope that your signing organization might push you up to The Show quicker than any other team could be a big difference maker. And for this to happen at the same time as Kris Bryant is getting CBA'd in the face by his huge market team - to show international free agents that the Blue Jays don't f*** around with service time or twiddle their thumbs and let you ride a bus for 6 years - it could be a big deal. Theory of conspiracy, but sounds accurate.

My theory is that AA thinks using good starting prospects as relievers is a cheap way to build a talented bullpen. Having big league coaches and increased attention put on them may mean that it won't necessarily hurt their development either. Will be interesting to see how it turns out.

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Short term this might work out if they think Saunders will be back when they're projecting (I wouldn't hold my breath on that) but then we'd still would need a 4th OF. I like Tolly but Goins would just make sense as a defensive replacement/SS replacement kind of deal. If/when Reyes goes down who will man the position? Sticking someone out there for a game isn't horrible but any long period of time and we're screwed. Having two (technically 3 with Estrada) long relievers seems redundant but with 2 starters being first year starters it might not be a bad idea to have them to piggy back in case one gets knocked out early. But Hendricks over Drabek? Eh. I'm not a big fan of both Osuna and Castro making the team simply because they're good arms and had good springs. I know our options were/are limited but as many have said at least one should be starting, if not both, down in the minors. I don't mind Travis making the team especially over the other options. The kid raked in ST and he deserves a shot especially with the other guys they'd stick out there. Run him out there until he proves that he's not ready and hopefully that won't happen.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I think they may release him. At least I'm hoping they do. I'm actually shocked Tolleson made the team over Goins. Didn't expect that at all. I'm assuming it is due to Goins having options left and Tolly being able to hit a bit better. But with Valencia it doesn't make sense to have another RHB with limited defense while we could have Goins who brings another LHB along with great defense and the ability to back up short.

It would be nice to have a bit of speed on the bench for our fatty's
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 2 rookies at key positions up the middle 2 rookie starters 2 rookies key relievers
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 It would be nice to have a bit of speed on the bench for our fatty's I agree. Fields should be on the bench instead of Tolleson until Saunders is back. Tolleson is dead weight with Valencia here. At least in Fields you have a legit back up outfielder and a late inning pinch runner. f***ing stupid.

Law's arrogance will be his downfall. Just like those on here that so confidently dismiss Sanchez.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Law's arrogance will be his downfall. Just like those on here that so confidently dismiss Sanchez. There's a big difference between dismissing Sanchez and heavily dampening expectations that he'll just hit the ground running.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 The thing I fear is at some point they may have to pinch run Navarro. the very though of that makes me dry heave. Tolly just doesn't make sense unless they want to hang onto him and hope that when Saunders is good to go he can slip through waivers at that time. If you're going to go with the best you have at least pick a different dimension to the player eg speed, fielding, versatility, power, etc.. I'm sure Goins' option likely played a part but at least he gives you pretty good defense up the middle, backs up short a lot better than Tolly can, gives a LHH, or even Kawaski. I'm assuming it's the let's not lose Tolly on waivers now, sneak him through later, or for some reason keep him on the team in case an injury or move is made later. He really becomes space wasted if they decide to keep Macier when he's activated since you figure they'll either stick him at second and send Travis down, use him as the back up IF, or if lucky just eat the $3M and let him go.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 It would be nice to have a bit of speed on the bench for our fatty's I agree. Like I mentioned imagine a scenario where we have to pinch run Navarro? Ugh.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Truly competitive effort by Sanchez, so many competitive walks
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Truly competitive effort by Sanchez, so many competitive walks His spring has been pretty terrible lol. 10BB 11K 16R in 22IP. I wonder how long he'll last in the rotation.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2015 Author Posted April 1, 2015 I like Navarro if he's only used for pinch-hitting and catching Buehrle. He was so clutch last year.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Sanchez will be out of the rotation by mid-May. He is no where near ready to start. I think Castro might be decent enough to stick around but I could see Osuna demoted at some point. AA seems to think he has a new revolutionary way to developing young starters so let's see how it plays out. Still think Sanchez in the rotation is insane, but only slightly less insane than having Osuna and Castro in the Majors already.

He didn't have his stuff today, but because it was spring training they left him out there. In the regular season he never would have lasted as long as he did so that skews his numbers. I don't get the posters who gleefully post like it's Christmas morning when a player doesn't perform well....oh wait..you're a rays fan, not a jays fan.
bendera3 Verified Member Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Having all these long relievers on the roster makes me think they might do some sort of piggy back thing with Sanchez.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Having all these long relievers on the roster makes me think they might do some sort of piggy back thing with Sanchez. It would be a way to hedge that bet. I personally am hoping AA is thinking that pitchers have good numbers the first time through an order, so why favor guys that can only pitch one inning.
bendera3 Verified Member Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Not saying it's going to happen but if the team IS going to go with 8 relievers with 2 or 3 longmen it would be a good way to keep them all stretched out just in case. That way your starting depth is already in the majors and if a starter goes down you can call up either a reliever or someone like Goins or an outfielder.
