Valencia's value at smashing lefties is good enough to warrant a 1B platoon imo, if not at least regular play time in the line up somehow.

 

At worst, Edwin could play the field on those days. You'd want to give him some time there anyways.

MoustakAZ hits like 20 HR and bats like .800 each spring and it doesn't mean much. Neither does Smoak's #s. Way more concerned from just hearing some people on here saying how slow his bat speed looks.

I was going to chime in that, if Smoak manages to play himself out of a role on the team I'd still be fine with a Barton-Valencia L-R platoon (with some days given to Edwin, because of course). Looks like everyone's got it covered, though!

Hard to argue that as long as his glove isn't a liability there. It's really going to be interesting to see how this all shakes out at 1B- Smoak's future, Edwin's back, potential Navarro trade, DB/DV platoon.

Smoak was alright in 2013. He's also put up better numbers away than what he has at home at Seattle.

Yeah guys Barton could definitely be interesting, he takes a lot of walks to get on base apparently. He's a lefty too so he could platoon well with Valencia but I'm not sure how well DV's fielding is at 1B.

 

Except Barton is a reverse platoon guy, who has significantly better numbers vs. LHP in his career (wRC+ 126 vs LHP, wRC+ 93 vs. RHP). Barton's a brutal .688 OPS guy vs. RHP for his career. Valencia has more power and versatility while Barton has more on base skills and is superior defensively at 1st.

 

Smoak isn't much better vs. RHP for his career, but I still see them being committed to giving him regular at bats for a month or so due to pedigree and FB% profile mentioned above.

I didn't know that, to be honest I haven't followed Barton that closely but that definitely creates a bit more intrigue to this current situation. I really hope Smoak pulls it out and can be effective, hopefully that FB% will come into effect at the RC. I mean that would be the ideal scenario as opposed to him continually playing like ass (sorry politically correct forum nazi's but yes he has been hot garb thus far.. even in a sss). Who knows maybe they're just tinkering with his swing so he gets a pass this ST due to it being a controlled experiment, or maybe not and he really just is that bad. Either way it's going to be really interesting to see how it all shakes out at 1B this year.
