Melky's money is basically going to Martin. If there was some magic way to throw Navarro's money at the OF, it would all come out even in the wash.

Well that's why I was against the Martin signing. Its all a huge mess now just so that we could add Martin. We ignored our holes, didn't care a s*** about depth and now it is showing.

Hopefully AA can flip Navarro for someone with a decent arm in LF. We already have enough batter power, and with the additions of Donaldson and Martin we can only get stronger there.

Rofl one day after I said he was one of the keys to the season. Lol @ our soln to left being Saunders right after we got rid of injury plagued Lawrie for being out for too many games. Still pick Saunders over Melky? Being cheap never pays. Kinda glad this happened. AA is in s***, Melky's prolly feeling great, and Pillar gets a shot. Win win win

Yes, Saunders is the better player.

It's ugly in that the bottom 4 could very well likely end up being a black hole.

And the top 5 will be ridiculously good. That is still an extremely good offense.

Internal candidates and Steamer600 WAR:

Pillar 1.2

Dickerson 1.2

Dirks 1.2 (but injured)

Carrera 0.6

I'm happy with that, be we need another guy in case there is another injury.

How about putting in Jake Marisnik?

Handsome Jake would be good. His glorious and distracting pristine jawline and masculine facial structure would probably help with our pitchers' k-rates like framing would.

Whoever the Jays get, they need him to be able to hit right-handers.

Jays were already weak from the left side; the Saunders injury only exacerbates this.

Ironically, this injury might make it HARDER for AA to trade Navarro, unless a better LH bat is coming back.

agreed. i don't see Dioner being moved at this point & see him at DH quite a bit more which means very few days off for any regulars until after the all-star break when Saunders gets back. let the patchwork by AA begin.

Maybe if he was a FA signing and had no injury history/was already an everyday LF.

Definitely not with his history and us having to give up Happ.

how much do you want to give up for handsome Jake?

Marisnick? ..Maybe Dwight Smith Jr+

Is Domingo Santana available?

Yeah it's not like Martin will have an impact or anything.

What we gave up on b/c of Martin signing:

Melky

Happ

Chance to upgrade 2b

Chance to upgrade the pen

Chance to upgrade the starting rotation

Not saying we would have been able to address it all in absence of Martin.

Oh yeah and we're paying Navarro 5M to do nothing. Atm u might as well just add his salary to Martin's for this yr.

Man we haven't even played a game yet and the season is already looking over. 3 weak spots in the order was iffy - now we're at 4. And does anyone think Reyes will hold up all year? LOL.

On the plus side there are bound to be out of options players on other teams we can pick up - but then those guys are usually at best AAAA scrubs and you can;t have that for half a season unless our pitching is ridiculous.

Agreed. Losing Saunders for 3 months is a significant blow, but our top 5 is so good that it will reasonably compensate for some weakness at the bottom (and before anyone jumps on this statement, I said some weakness - if the bottom 4 is a complete black hole that changes things).

I don't like having black holes in the line-up. Sure, the top 5 are great, but hitters will fail 2/3 of the time. I'd hate to give an opposing pitcher a 10-pitch easy inning and they can head back to the dugout and rest and come out on momentum. Either way, can't do much about it.

Sure, let's bring in new pitchers but leave a bad catcher behind the plate. It's not like that's never back-fired on the Jays or anything. Martin DOES improve the pen and the rotation. Martin DIDN'T prevent the Jays from acquiring Travis. So yeah it cost us Happ and Melky and though it's annoying to be paying 5 million to Navarro, none of that makes up for the overall value provided. The signing was a clear win. Nice try though.

Agreed. We're assuming that the bottom 4 will be a black hole, though. It's possible that it could be. I'm concerned too, but my despair is just a bit tempered is all.

Add to the fact that Martin isn't just a Jay for this year. Martin is a long-term commitment that will help for the next few years. It was a smart deal, even if it limited payroll for this year.

There will probably be 40 former major league OF's cut before March 30th. At least one must be a fit for the Jays.

Especially Boston.

Last 2 years. Everyone: "Ugh Happ is so bad."

This offseason: "If Fat Alex has any sense he'll trade Happ for Saunders. WAR!! etc...."

Trade happens: "AA must have had the good tzatziki this is the perfect trade. Saunders is made of glass but I would still do it. Screw Melky and his regression! WAR!!! etc...."

This morning, "Happ is going to be amazing. Why would we trade him? The trade is questionable at best. AA is so fat."

Please tell me how we could add 5 wins there for $17M/year.

Projections aren't guaranteed. That 'projection' also assumes he catches every game he starts and plays.
