Should we start a Winter Meetings thread?

Nah. Everything from the WM fits cleanly into Around Baseball or the Offseason Roster Thread

Should we start a Winter Meetings thread?

From the not-a-surprise department: Multiple GMs say because of the price of free agents, they expect trade action in Nashville to be big.

Sounds like the Mariners will make some trades

Mariners, Padres, and Indians will probably be mobbed for starters. I can't see Cleveland getting offers that interest them for Carrasco or Salazar, but Bauer could be moved?

I think it's because things can change. If we have a rash of bad injuries we might be out of it and then no need to invest more later and we are in sell mode. It's a risk mgm strategy.

You could say that about every team though. You don't not sign players because your stars could get injured. The Jays might never have as good a team as they do now, they should try to capitalize on it.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just trying to understand Rogers and mgm strategy

I don't get it

Beane doesn't make much sense anymore. He's all over the place.

David Frist is GM there now. Beane is VP of baseball ops. Not sure how much Beane is saying when it comes to roster construction.

The modern "VP of Baseball Ops" is what the GM used to be. Lots of GMs today are functionally what used to be considered AGMs.

Baseball front offices continue to expand as organizations realize the value of talented executives. New titles are needed for the extra suits.

So Mark Shapiro is the real gm here?

I wouldn't really say that. Roles are just a lot more blended these days. Atkins will probably do the vast majority of every day GM stuff, but I'm assuming Sha-pie-ro will have the final word on any significant moves, even if the budget is unaffected.

Basically, Atkins' motto will be "What Would Mark Do?"

How could you not want this guy.

Of course I'd want him, the point is we have no shot in hell with the payroll we have left.

They could sign David and Trade Bautista, just as an example. Won't happen though

Bautista has 10 and 5 rights....not going to happen. Plus that is not really an upgrade, although Davis is younger.

You think Bautista wouldn't accept a trade to a competing team? Cardinals for example

Of course he would if the Jays had no interest in re-signing him, it'd extinguish his arb eligibility, and thus make it far easier for him to get that last large payday.

He's obviously talking about the QO not being in play if Bautista were traded mid-season if the rules stay the same.
