Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Did a bit of a double take on this one, but the starting pitcher tonight for Cleveland after going 4-0 with a 1.36 ERA in AAA Columbus is none other than Shawn Marcum! I can't remember, didn't he fall out with somebody in the Blue Jays organization before he was traded? Rumors saying he was a bad influence
Praxis Verified Member Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Rumors saying he was a bad influence Right, I remember now. Interesting to see him pitching after nearly 2 years out of the bigs.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 actually called an error on Yadier...but this was fun to watch. http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/05/against-all-odds-bartolo-colon-hits-an-infield-single

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Well, the Jays lost, yet still don't lose ground because the AL East is garbage. Yanks lose, Rays lose, O's lose.. and the Red Sox are looking headed for a loss.

Laika Community Moderator Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 That's the biggest hashtag ump show that I can remember. Unfortunately, the ump has discretion under rule 56.01(f) in the CBA... Ejections .... 56.01 An umpire is given the power of discretion in determining whether a player shall be ejected from a game. The following non-exclusive list gives viable reasons for ejection: .... (f) a player is just being a little bit sassy;

That was right on the edge of the strike zone. It is the umpire's discretion regarding the strike zone. And considering Harper was tossed a week ago, MLB will likely try to set an example for him by suspending him for a game or two. Out of the strike zone or not, you can't show up the umps like that.
Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Marcum pitching better than any blue jay
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 What a pathetic team Boston is! They had a easy win with minor-leaguer Phil Klein making his starting debut for Texas.. and Klein(and the Rangers bullpen) mows down the Sox offense. 1 for 8 with RISP.. even Toronto can hit with RISP(but can't pitch..)

Praxis Verified Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 The Indians-White Sox game is a really good one; 4-1 Cleveland just now in top of 7th, Marcum 6 strong innings so far. He seems to have gained quite a bit of weight and his fastball is pretty weak, but his sliders and changeups have been crisp at times.

fireballW Verified Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Woke up this morning seeing that Harper was taken out in the first innings. Almost had a fantasy-baseball related heart attack. All is well though!
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 That and the White Sox offense is pathetic. Do they got pitching? If soo I smell trade partner! Lol

He just had the awesome change up.
Praxis Verified Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Nice outing by Marcum, but honestly I can't see it lasting; he looks like a classic AAA spot start/emergency relief pitcher these days. I'm not sure I saw his fastball crack 90mph when I was watching and while his sliders were often quite good, the Chisox were also swinging at some real garbage. The Houston/Detroit game today looks like a dandy at 1:00pm, as does the Mets/Cardinals at the same time; bummer that these games are in the afternoon while I'm still at work! Happ is pitching today for Seattle for those interested in tuning in.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 It doesn't matter if his fastball isn't cracking 90. If his off speed stuff is excellent, then he can do a good job as a 5th starter.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Wasn't it always really weak?? He just had the awesome change up. Yeah, but it's sitting a couple mph off what it used to be, regardless, his change-up and slider are + pitches, I see him doing quite well if he stays healthy.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Yeah, but it's sitting a couple mph off what it used to be, regardless, his change-up and slider are + pitches, I see him doing quite well if he stays healthy. I had a debate with a friend of mine about Marcum and Dickey. This was even before Dickey under-performed for us. I said Marcum=Dickey. They are both soft throwers with a trick pitch. I told him I thought Marcum's change-up, when on, rivaled the knuckle ball in terms of making guys look silly. I think Marcum _could_ of won a Cy Young, in the same way Dickey did. Get hot for a year and make guys look silly. I'm sure people will think I'm crazy. I believe Marcum's career performance is really close to Dickey's... in terms of WAR/162 games. Marcum is younger, missed a lot time because of injuries and maybe boozing.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 But Marcum's change-up has to be built off of something, mainly the fastball/curveball. Dickey was predominantly 75/25 knuckleball/fastball when he was with the Mets. So Marcum still needs to have a good enough fastball/curveball offering for players to respect it instead of just sitting on the change-up.
BTS Community Moderator Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 One thing Marcum has always been able to do is locate his fastball. If he can locate 88-89 and show his slider a few times a game, his devastating change should allow him to get by as a viable starter. Kuma has been doing it, albeit with a splitter instead of a change, and at a much higher level than you'd ever expect from a 33-year old Marcum.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Steve Pearce Grand Salami off Happ.. ERA just went up nearly 1 Not shocked at all. Happ's numbers are inflated by Safeco Field. He's the same mediocre pitcher he was with the Jays when outside of Seattle.
