I'm sick of these types of articles. Brandon Phillips doesn't flag down reporters to badmouth OBP - he gets asked directly about it. Joey Votto doesn't call Bob Nightengale to say that RBI are dumb - people ask him about it on the daily.

 

If Votto tried to hit more homers his production would go down because he does what works for his skill-set.

 

If Brandon Phillips tried to take more walks the same would probably happen to him because of his skill-set. If you don't have a great batting eye but you have really good bat-to-ball skills, why not swing away all the time?

Yep exactly. I was in the midst of typing a similar response before I read what you wrote. These articles are stupid. Phillips has never had a good eye so he relies on making decent contact when he see a close pitch instead of working the count, I don't see a problem with that.

Ya like you said it's all about trying to rope him into saying something that some people will perceive as dumb. A reporter's job is to create something that people will be interested in, so can't blame them, but still seems like an irrelevant article and yet people get mad for people starting threads over something interesting to talk about (even if it's not a huge news piece).

That's what bothers me. I don't really mind if a guy is just bad at determining balls and strikes, but the flowery language used by Phillips indicates a JPA like misunderstanding of the game, and an overpowering arrogance and resistance to change. All of these "geeks" have proven that Votto's approach is the correct one from a run production standpoint but none of these guys will pay it any mind.

You mean if there are cascading effects of good/poor OBP hitters arranged in a series? That could be an interesting thing to study.

It's definitely dramatized and the true meaning is lost on many people. It's not about OBP and Jeremy Brown, it's about exploiting market inefficiencies. In recent years, that's shifted from OBP to catcher framing and other new ideas. Interesting book suggestion, I'll look into it.

I knew it at the time. He was definitely a star and Pedro was know as his little brother. The baseball card of them together was pretty popular.

I'm really bad at remembering stuff from this long ago though. I'm 39 and the recall just isn't as it used to be. I had to think about it for a while before the memory came back. I'd pretty much forgotten all about Ramon Martinez. IIRC, he faded pretty quickly and dramatically just as Pedro emerged. It's been a solid decade at least since I gave him any thought.
