Fun Grantland article on pitch framing and how the Yankees had the information in 2009 (and essentially didn't use it). Also some interesting quotes about the workings in a front office and essentially mirror the comments of those I have talked to that have interned in a front office...but in a much nicer way.

http://grantland.com/features/brad-asumus-pitch-framing-dennis-eckersley/

the interesting points from the article...Alex Rubin appears to the actual godfather of Pitch Framing data. Who discovered it by trying to prove that Posada couldn't be a bad enough catcher to be worse overall than Jose Molina. This was a great quote

Later that year, after the World Series was won, Rubin and fellow Yankees quants Dave Grabiner and Jim Logue produced a report that summed up the statistical evidence in a sentence that would have strained belief if not for the inarguable numbers that went with it. “Jorge Posada could hit like Albert Pujols and Jose Molina could hit like Jose Molina, and Molina would still be better,”

that such edges are fleeting: In less than five years, framing went from a secret that might have been worth many millions of dollars to one that I can write about openly without looking over my shoulder to make sure a headbanded Brian Cashman isn’t rappelling down the wall. Third, that discovering something about baseball isn’t the same as getting top-to-bottom buy-in and being able to benefit from it. The Yankees, during the window when they may have understood the value of receiving skills better than anyone else, let Molina leave for a division rival and, later, allowed themselves to be outbid for Russell Martin by a team whose previous biggest free-agent buy was Clint Barmes.

He may just be the "godfather" within his organization. Chances are there was someone in another front office with it first.

Did you have an organization in mind?

Could really be anyone. Every team has smart interns. Whoever has the biggest intern base that were free to research.

Ultimately, the teams that look the smartest are the ones that are willing to apply the knowledge not the people with the most knowlegeable people.

Could be...but 2009 is the earliest I've heard about people applying the data. Most credit Fast who started his data in 2011 i believe.

Shae Simmons is the spring's first Tommy John casualty.

f***! He's a personal favourite.

Maybe sort of explains some of the Braves' weird veteran signings.

Damn that has to be hard on a guy who preps all winter, then not even make the official opening day of spring training.

Seems like pretty bad mismanagement. He went down in July didn't he? He could have had the surgery 6 months ago.

Not sure to be honest. If that's the case, dumb not to get the surgery right away.

Regardless, s***** thing to happen to anybody. Just the first of many victims this spring though I'm sure.

I'm surprised Joe Thatcher only got a minor league deal. He would have been a nice add with Cecil likely being used as the closer.

Marty Brennamen might be even worse than bobcat as far as radio personalities go. In 2013, Votto was hitting .330/.441/.525 and he slams him with the following gem "Saber people get all worked up over BB's, Joey Votto is paid to drive in runs, and he's on pace for 80 RBI."

Now, he says "if this guy comes back and is content to lead the lead in OBP again, then this team is in deep trouble" and the masses of their fans most likely look up to his opinion. Sigh.

He's probably just trolling them too.

Sadly I doubt it. Seems to just be your run of the mill, lack of intelligence

That's part of it but also I think part of it is that if you make a good living being an outspoken uninformed boob, there's no real incentive to challenge your own assumptions and accept new ideas. You stick to the shtick that pays the bill. This is a plague amongst broadcasters and journalists.

Remember that giantic ump who called that low strike for Tanaka. He was 6'5 and that strike was 5 inches off the ground. What a jackass

Hey, speaking of the Rangers, if they are kind of in rebuild mode, I wonder what they could get for Tanaka if traded. Does he have two more years of control?

Quoted before you can sneakily edit this when you realize that you are thinking of Darvish...
