abola2121 Verified Member Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I'm no architect, but assuming there's plans for a new ballpark in the near future, wouldn't it be feasible to deconstruct the Rogers Centre down to the grass field, and build a new structure (preferably w/ a retractable glass roof) over the same area rather than build a new ballpark somewhere else in the GTA?
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 No, I think it's more feasible to simply build a new ballpark at that point.

It would take a couple years, so no.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 A new stadium is still at least 10-20 years away. Besides, MLB is more worried about the Tampa and Oakland situations right now.
43211234 Verified Member Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Pipedream that will never happen and probably isn't even a good idea: A beautiful baseball only park built on the lake shore.

I agree that we're probably looking at least 20 years from now though, probably longer.

Montreal will probably get a team before Toronto gets a new stadium.. and no new stadiums are currently on the horizon in MLB after Atlanta, with the San Jose situation going nowhere and the Rays getting no closer to getting a new stadium. Only the LA Angels may have a shot at a new stadium.. their ownership is threatening to build a new stadium without significant concessions from Anaheim regarding Angel Stadium.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Rogers Centre is really the perfect location for a ball park. But yeah, we would have no where to play if we tore it down to rebuild it.

Besides, MLB is more worried about the Tampa and Oakland situations right now. I would imagine this would be most likely. The thing is, what with how the city is blowing up in terms of condo developments, I wonder if there will be any space left in 20 years? And say what you will about the Rogers Centre, but it's in a good location. I think they'll have to slowly, over time, transform the Rogers Centre in stages. Installing grass will be the first major stage. This is going to be a long process. They also seem to have removed a ton of seats, so I wonder if they're finally replacing some of them?

Well I don't remember Exhibition but that's the main reason I said it was probably a bad idea. The Rogers Centre is pretty much in a near perfect place now, which does make the issue of a new stadium interesting, when it eventually is needed. Maybe big retrofits? That would be a more expensive and complicated option though.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 If there were any plans to replace the Rogers Centre I would think it would have been discussed in the Pan Am structure discussions (even building Tim Horton's field for baseball as a short term solution would have likely been discussed, assuming they wanted to build on the RC location). I also think that the wind issue could be built around by correct architecture, I still hold out hope for a casino/resort at the Ontario place location so I don't want a stadium there...unless it's part of the casino resort.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Not a single tax payer dime should ever go towards a ballpark for a team that hasn't been to the playoffs in 21 years. Maybe if they win a championship or two,

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Rogers paid $25M for the Dome IIRC. With the condo boom I bet they could sell that property, buy another property in the boonies, build a stadium there and still make a huge profit. With the negative result being that the team ends up playing in the boonies.

It essentially killed the Expos, and I believe is badly hurting the Rays and A's.

The only semi-feasible location that comes to mind is Downsview Park. Scary thing is if we has some f***er like Loria in the same position Rogers is in with team and building ownership he'd do it in a split second...or send the team off to Brooklyn if he couldn't find a good spot in Toronto while collecting big $$$ from the condo developers.

MLB would never let Toronto move to the US. You would be taking away one of the largest fanbases in MLB when you take into account there are Jays fans all across Canada.

SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I'm not from TO, but I've been lucky enough to see many Jays games in TO (5 this last fall). I like the Rogers Centre, and think it's still a nice stadium. I've been to Camden Yards, Safeco and Coors Field, and they are really nice, but I think if the Jays sunk say $100M into the Rogers Centre for renos it would be amazing. And after the grass is installed of course.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 The Rogers Centre is in a perfect location. Anywhere more to the south/near the lake shore would make it extremely irritating to get to since transit in this city sucks. Improving the look of the outside of the stadium should be a big priority too. The aquarium has improved the look of the area to the southeast but the rest of it is extremely plain. Can someone please explain to me why this city is so obsessed with concrete? It's so tacky. Everywhere I go I see a new park being built based around concrete and a few trees. Our city planners/architects are so uninspiring.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 So you would rather our money go to some country we never heard of to fix there problems because thats where your money is currently going I don't think Toronto spends much on foreign aid. Spending tax money on a sports stadium somebody else gets to own is stupid, Very low priority infrastructure.
