Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 I've been hoping to hear AA trades Navarro ever since they signed Martin. But as the days go by, I worry more that we will be "stuck" with him as a redundant player. Too good to be a backup catcher (unless they cut ties with Thole), and not good enough to warrant full time DH duty. I think the Jays (and EE) want EE to have most of the DH at bats. Also they would like to give reyes and bautista some off days from the turf and use the DH role for that. EE could play 1b for some of those days. This use will severely limit the number of games available at DH for Navarro. Do you think AA will swing a trade before spring training? during spring training OR in season before the trade deadline? What kind of return do you think is out there? Power bullpen arm ?
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 At this point I will accept back a mid reliever with a similar $5 million contract value on an expiring deal that is an average player simply to fill one hole.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 With the 5 or so catcher trades that took place in the past 3 days...you have to figure that AA is not discussing Navarro to anyone right now. But figuring out value shouldn't be tough.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Too good to be a backup catcher I don't agree with this "too good to be a backup catcher" stuff. He's been a backup catcher nearly his whole career which makes sense because he's too lousy defensively for an everyday gig. The real problem is that he's making too much money for what he is. It sucks to pay 5 million dollars for a backup catcher and that's why the Jays should move him but it's also the reason why it's hard to get a return for him.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Catchers are being traded left and right. Either AA is sleeping or he is asking for way too much.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 To SD for Joaquin Benoit. Beg them to throw in the $3M difference in salary for 2015 not happening
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 To SD for Joaquin Benoit. Beg them to throw in the $3M difference in salary for 2015 Norris has a pretty similar but arguably better skill set and he's younger and has more control + they just signed Ross + they have Hedges It's shame that ship has sailed though. It they were willing to trade Hahn for Norris, they might have given something o.k. for Navarro.

Key22 Verified Member Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 I agree with trying to trade Navarro but I also think you need to improve the team - otherwise don't bother. $5 million for one year is not exactly difficult to eat since all the good free agents are off the board or won't come to TO anyway. Navarro can hit and he hits better than Smoak who is currently the 1B/DH on the team. Navarro was rated 2.1 oWAR and +0.9dWar so perhaps not as bad behind the plate as some are saying - in fact he has ranked on the plus side of the dWar side every year since 2006. He also hit left or right handers equally well. $5million for a DH who is a .700OPS kind of guy with 12 homers and 22 doubles and hits .270 and is a little better than a league average defensive catcher is not a bad guy to have around. I'd keep him unless I can get something in the pen that will DEFINITELY replace what we currently have or would be the equivalent of one of the set-up guys - a guy as good as Loup or Cecil or a notch down that is better than anyone else we have in the pen. Further, when you want to give Russel Martin a day off from Catching you can have Martin DH, EE can play first base, Navarro catches. This is a better scenario than anything involving Josh Thole. And without an Ace or a number 2 starter and a near worst MLB bullpen - we're going to need all the damn offense we can get.

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Trade Navarro what do you get, nothing much! Salary relief and 250 pounds lighter!

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 I've wanted them to trade him for salary relief all offseason so far, but that was because I wanted them to target Medlen or Lowrie and be able to afford them. At this point though, who are you cutting salary for? Unless they're targeting Shields, which is a guy I can easily see the Jays being a mystery team on, and probably the last remaining non-RP free agent that makes sense for them, I don't mind keeping Navarro at this point. He was clutch as a motherf*** last year, and even if it wasn't sustainable, you could probably do worse for a PH, which is all I think they should use him for.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Didn't Jesse Chavez go from like their #6 guy to their # 2 guy this offseason? Not really - the A's have a lot of starting pitching depth after all the trades they've made still. I'd say Chavez is back in the rotation come Opening Day since Griffin or Parker might not be ready. Though he's definitely expendable and it's not like the A's don't have any arms. Also, I'm sure the A's sign a veteran SP like how they did with Colon and Kazmir over the past couple of seasons. Gray Kazmir Hahn Chavez Griffin Parker Bassitt Pomeranz Nolin Graveman

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Man, if there was any way to pry Kazmir from there, he would fit in so nicely over Sanchez in the rotation.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Aside from obtaining a couple of relievers AAs work is done. Need at least one late inning and one middle reliever then bring back Sanchez as closer.
