BlueJaysCC Verified Member Posted December 13, 2014 Author Posted December 13, 2014 Shields would also be another clubhouse leader which would be good for the Jays younger pitchers however, the Redsox or Yankees might chase Shields if they miss out on Scherzer.
BlueJaysCC Verified Member Posted December 13, 2014 Author Posted December 13, 2014 Dickey's like 200 IP of guaranteed average ball + Dickey effect on a low AAV. No idea why people want to move him. If Martin can catch the knuckler, we can get a better backup and Dickey will be even more valuable now that he's only taking up one spot I agree there is absolutely no reason to move Dickey unless the Jays can get an upgrade on Dickey. The most logical thing to do is have Martin catch Dickey and get rid of Thole
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 I think we still need a LOOGY for late inning match ups because I don't really view Loup as a traditional "lefty" in that he will come out to face one guy, he can get both lefties and rights out and can handle a full inning but lacks the stuff to shutdown a game in the late innings so would slide in as a mid relief. One really good "stuff" righty for the 8th or 9th inning would really give the pen to go with Cecil *cough Clippard*. Then we can survive with a mix of guys from the farm and guys like Jenkins for mid relief where hopefully 1-2 of the young guys can establish themselves enough that we can let the free agent Clippard's of the world go and just bump everyone else up a spot next year.

You basically just said Loup can get both LH and RH hitters out but we need a guy for that role who can only get LH hitters out.

No, I am saying that Loup is better then a LOOGY and with Cecil slated to be an 8th or 9th inning guy we would still need someone to come into Jams on the way to Cecil to strikeout the Ortiz' of the world.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 That's what a Shanchez Norris Castro etc etc etc can do! Plus we already own them! Get Shields already!
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Besides once you sign Shields nobody would even give a s*** about the pen and if you sign Janssen back! Smoke n Mirrors effect! Lol
King Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Janssen is seriously perfect for this team, and frankly, the general opinion towards him around these parts has gotten way overboard. Three straight seasons of brilliant work out of the pen from 2011-2013 (top 15 in the majors kind of brilliant), never posted negative value at any point in his career, and he entered the All Star break in 2014 with a 2.00 FIP and a 1.23 ERA. People have really been s***ing on him because of 23 bad innings in the second half of the season, after he got ludicrously sick and lost 8 pounds in 10 hours over the break. If we're looking at bounce-back candidates like Romo, Ogando and Grilli, Janssen should be first on that list. And what blows is that I really don't think the Jays are looking at bringing him back. Whoever does give him a chance is probably going to get a steal. Bring back Janssen, pick up Crain, trade Navarro for a third arm, and the bullpen is probably set. Janssen had a ~3.5 xFIP entering the 2014 allstar break and his fastball velocity had already declined to ~88 MPH at that point. Strikeouts were way down (although the walks were too), it was only a matter time before he was blowing up in games for us. Which... he did, as he was utter s*** in the second half. Sickness or not. He's not a good reliever anymore, it's time to cut bait and move on.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Remember, Osuna, Castro and possibly Hoffman could move quickly and end up in the MLB bullpen in the 2nd half ala Sanchez this past season.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Janssen's arm is held together with glue. The Jays got his best years. I don't want the Jays to be the team that is paying him $4M when his arm gives out.

I don't think there is any chance Hoffman comes up. They are going to want to monitor his progress in the minors after coming back from TJS.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 I wonder, if the Jays are looking at recent DFA's in Germen and Varvaro, especially the latter, PTBNL, cash, C-spect, via trade. I can't see them making it out of the NL, nevermind making it to us. C'mon...Ogando/Crain and Varvaro, Alex...
Key22 Verified Member Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Jays signed Wilton Lopez. Didn't you guys get the memo - AA landed his set-up/closer already. Rob Rasmussan and Jeff Francis will be the LOOGYs And we got Liam Hendriks and Estrada for the right side AA said we were getting two relievers - And man he got us FOUR - count them FOUR. SO what is everyone worried about? Remember "Volatile Pens" The guy with the 2.50 ERA for 6 years in a row is volatile - so we can safely ignore Francis and his 9.00+ ERA last year - it's all just fluke with bull pens. Beeston said the payroll will go up - but you guys forgot to ask an important question - "Does payroll mean Canadian or US dollars?" Payroll will go way up in CAD.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Cecil Loup Sanchez Estrada Redmond Jenkins Delabar Drabek Romero Rasmussen I'm probably not going to get a lot of support for this but I could see an above average pen being made out of that group. It would probably depend on Drabek,Delabar and Romero pulling their collective heads out of their asses. All three are at a point in their careers where it's time to put up or shut up so there's definitely incentive. Sanchez is going to be a starter next year.

All offseason he's been mentioning Motte, but when the Cubs sign him, and Jays fans question it, he takes a swig of that rogers kool-aid, and come up with this gem. Basically everything the Jays do is right, everything they don't do is right. Mike Wilner @Wilnerness590 · 12h 12 hours ago I did want #Bluejays to sign Jason Motte, it's true. But I wanted them to sign him for about 1/3 of what #Cubs gave him. #NoLongerLowRisk

I don't think it's so obvious that he's being insincere here. Hard to tell because he's such a tool but he's not the only one calling it an overpay so meh.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Norris is more of a finished product at this point. He'd be my pick to make the rotation this spring. I actually wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of a revolving door approach to the fifth starter spot. They have a few pitchers that they'll want to monitor innings with. They should be looking at both getting Sanchez and Norris more innings than they got last year but not so many that they need to be shut down before year end. Norris has pitched quite a few less innings than Sanchez. Sanchez will be the number 5 starter at the beginning of next year. I highly doubt out of Sanchez, hutch and Stroman that at least one of these guys won't have some injury issues even if they aren't that serious at some point during the season.

The difference is that people on this board would remain consistent, and call it an overpay if the Jays had signed him to an identical deal. Wilner, on the other hand, would be saying that its still a great low risk deal, no such thing as a bad 1-year deal, this is the price you have to pay in this market, etc. etc. etc.

Maybe as part of keeping his job Rogers forced Wilner to create a fake identity and post love for Cito. I think Grant goes back farther then that though.

TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Wow, Rays just traded Matt Joyce to the Angels for Jepsen, who has closer stuff. Looks like going the trade route is going to be just as expensive in terms of talent, as the free agent market is in terms of dollars.
