Rybar Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 As per rotoworld; Aroldis Chapman - R - Reds According to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, the Reds are open to trading closer Aroldis Chapman. Chapman has two more years of arbitration-eligibility, so he would probably fetch the Reds a big-time return package. The 26-year-old left-handed flamethrower boasts a 2.32 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 430 strikeouts in 252 2/3 career major league innings. Trading him could set off an offseason firesale in Cincinnati. What do you think it would cost? What would you be willing to part with to get him?

baseballsss Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 I would part with a lot if he agreed to get stretched out as a starter. didn't the reds try to stretch him about last spring? I could be wrong though.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 2 years control of a 3 WAR reliever. Hmmmm, I would possibly part with 1 big prospect for that plus lesser depth options.
Travis_Snider Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 start with sanchez or norris and add some good prospects on from there. In other words NO. If you can get Chapman for Sanchez or Norris + I would do that any day.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Keep in mind that if you do acquire Chapman with the intentions of him being a starter, he'd be on a strict innings limit on the following 2 seasons. He could end up dominating the league but for only 120, 160 innings.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 If you can get Chapman for Sanchez or Norris + I would do that any day. I wouldn't. Value is still value and you don't trade the potential for 2 top of the rotation arms for 2 years of a closer. Imagine how you would feel in a few years if you ended up dealing basically a Price + Shields in their prime for Papelbon.

Or imagine having a dominant young closer working for you while your "potential" could amount to nothing.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Osuna and Norris for Chapman would be fair
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Osuna and Norris for Chapman would be fair fairly stupid. IMHO *edit* if he isn't starting
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 I would part with a lot if he agreed to get stretched out as a starter. They stretched him out in spring of 2013 and he didn't stick. Not that it's his choice but he hated the idea of starting. Also, I have doubts over how his stuff will play as a starter. It seems like his repertoire would be suited for closing, but that's just my feeling.

He was a starter in Cuba and his velocity was still plus-plus.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 He definitely has the stuff to be a starter. Fastball, slider, change-up are all deadly. However, the big deal with him was stamina. I read that his problem was repeating his off-speed pitches over multiple innings.
mitchf Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 It was a GM/manager disagreement I think? He also preferred to close. He hasn't actually been tried as a starter. FB, SL, CH would be all he needs. He has two pitches at the moment, but yes I actually think he's more enticing as a starting as he gets older.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 His CU is s***. He doesn't use it because it's very very hittable, not because he doesn't need it. Not true. His change-up is pretty much unhittable but his problem was he had terrible issues locating it.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Sanchez is probably just as good a closer as Chapman, and he already plays for us.
King Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Sanchez is probably just as good a closer as Chapman, and he already plays for us. No he isn't. Not even close.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Sanchez is probably just as good a closer as Chapman, and he already plays for us. Chapman >>> any other closer
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Reds did try stretching Chapman out and it failed. I think they tried a couple times, as recent as 2014 season. He went to DL as a result and came back in his normal closer role

baseballsss Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Chapman >>> any other closer Kimbrel?
baseballsss Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 If you can get Chapman for Sanchez or Norris + I would do that any day. This is based off him being a closer as mentioned in this thread they have tried to stretch him out and disn't work. Why trade a potential 1 or 2 for a guy thats going to give you 60 innings. Doesn't make sense.

Why trade a potential 1 or 2 for a guy thats going to give you 60 innings. Doesn't make sense. Because those 60 innings are worth as much as a number 3 starter, which would be a very good outcome for Sanchez or Norris to turn into.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Because those 60 innings are worth as much as a number 3 starter, which would be a very good outcome for Sanchez or Norris to turn into. 60 innings will never be worth 180-200. Sanchez pitched 33 pretty dominant innings last year and might be a front of the rotation starter
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Kimbrel? Maybe not three full arrows better than Kimbrel, lol.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 60 innings will never be worth 180-200. Sanchez pitched 33 pretty dominant innings last year and might be a front of the rotation starter Last year- Chapman 54 innings-2.7 WAR, RA9WAR-2.0 Jeremy Guthrie- 202 innings 1.5 WAR, RA9WAR 1.9 Edit: There probably isn't a good chance Sanchez ever throws 200 innings in a season.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Stroman only pitched a 130 innings and he had 3.3 war. It's not unreasonable for Norris or Sanchez to put up similar numbers - Buerhle was 3.5
