AA is obsessing over "value" again in the free agent market. He's going to end up having to give up assets to acquire relief help which rarely works out well for him.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Sign McCarthy and keep Sanchez in the pen. Problem solved. If your going to spend $10ish million for a reliever, why not get a starter and keep the minimum wage rookie as the closer?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 just like the Jays-Vince .gif, here is the White sox one http://i.imgur.com/NBHj6LR.gif

If ~1 WAR relievers are getting $6M a year, then sign a 3 WAR starter for $13M per and put Sanchez in the pen. It might hurt Sanchez's development, but you either want to win in 2015 or half-ass it. That decision is up to them.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Gregerson was the guy this team needed. AA missed the boat.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Gregerson was the guy this team needed. AA missed the boat. No GM ever misses the boat when it comes to RP. They are a dime a dozen.

I certainly don't want us to rely on Janssen as our closer. He's all downhill imo.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Well what more were they supposed to do? They had great SP and needed to improve their pen and went out and picked up two great RP's that didn't work out...so you are saying, based on this, teams should give up trying to acquire RP? I'm not that concerned about relief pitching. We can find some on the cheap. By all means pick some up if the price is right. I was just pointing out that people are saying "get relief pitching or else we'll be like the tigers" But the tigers did everything they could in terms of "getting relief pitching". They "got" great relievers. Those great relievers just didn't perform. The giant have guys like Jean Machi. If your thinking who the hell is that I was too. Apparently just some 30something guy who they picked up from the Mexican League or something. And they have Jeremy Affeldt. Who looks Casey Jansen to me. Mediocre in 2013. Bounced back. So as long as Jansen is healthy start with keeping him... who cares if he had a down year. It happens.

JTech780 Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Just heard on MLB radio that Dee Gordon is available from the Dodgers. What would it take to acquire him and would it be worth it? His OBP could be better but it has improved every year he has been in the majors. He can play 2B and SS, so he could spell Reyes at SS and as a leadoff guy on days off or in case of injury. Adding his speed to the lineup would be a big plus. If AA could add him without giving up Sanchez or Norris is it worth it or even possible without giving up either of those two.

The problem is he has so much cheap control, he will be a super 2 next season but still have 5 years of club control and since he just posted a 3 WAR season, they can expect to ask for a package for at least 1 top notch Sanchez/Norris prospect + others.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Why the f*** are the Astros hunting relievers? That team is s*** and they don't need to spend money on them. I think they know that good relievers have a ton of trade value at the deadline, so they are signing them only to flip them at the deadline. Only logical explanation I have,
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Even though he successfully traded with Beane, I don't want to see AA dealing with Friedman. The thought of the package for Dee Gordan after a 3 WAR year makes me cringe.

The Shields trade IMO will be poor in hindsight but we have to wait on Myers still. That's just off the top of my head.

Westfan Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Anyone find a player of interest in the rule 5 draft tomorrow. I see some hard throwers with little control.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Anyone find a player of interest in the rule 5 draft tomorrow. I see some hard throwers with little control. Cody Martin - he'll go early I think.
JaysRap Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Relievers are gettin snapped up here, where's AA? He went to the Winter Meetings with the intent to fix the bullpen and time's a ticking.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Wade Miley is one of my favourite pitchers. He'll sneaky good. I'm nervous the Red Sox are going to steal him here.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Author Posted December 10, 2014 Aaron Sanchez+ for Wade Miley. AA's having a media conference right now, so I really doubt he's on the other end of this trade. Speaking of...
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Did you like my trade in the BBDL, North? Yes. You got yourself a young workhorse #3 in Miley for two loose ends.
King Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Alex was at the Raptors game when the Donaldson trade news broke, apparently. You never know! Although, I think he's going to the Red Sox here. We'll have to see.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Author Posted December 10, 2014 Also, saw this yesterday, thought it was funny, forgot to post: Kinda hilarious/f***ed up how that played out. I'd feel pretty bitter if I was an A's fan right now.
TBJ12 Verified Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Based on this tweet from Barry Davis it sounds like the Jays were interested in Gregerson and Neshek but both preferred Houston.
King Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 I would do Sanchez + for Miley.
