Speaking of 2B, why has Rickie Weeks gotten essentially 0 mention or speculation so far? I feel like he could be a great fallback option to consider. Fangraphs crowd projected him for a 2/12 deal and he seems to have rebounded pretty well with the bat this past season. His defense is still pretty bad and he's always K'd a lot, but hell, at that price tag, if you can throw down a 120 wRC+, I'll take it.

Edit: Though he's right-handed; I don't think that should be a deterrent, but I get that the Jays FO is looking for lefties.

Ive mentioned him as an option but as mentioned the defence is pretty bad and there are better stop gap options on the board, maybe weeks cant find a suiter and becomes a blue jay but wont be until the middle infield market becomes more barron

Is UZR of any real utility for first basemen?

EE: -11.6 runs per 150 games, career.

Smoak: 0 runs per 150 games, career.

Jays would benefit by roughly 1 full win by playing Smoak @ first everyday and keeping Edwin off the field.

That extra 2%!

When you factor in positional adjustment, it's closer to half a win, I think. Which is still very important.

Overall the news is disappointing. After non-tendering him there was hope they'd get a more capable 1B/DH.

Maybe there is still some hope, at 1 million some team (Twins? Marlins if they can't sign anyone?) could pick up his contract.

nu-uh.

In runs per 600 PA, the positional adjustments add up to -30 either way (-12.5 1B and -17.5 DH). Doesn't matter who is playing where.

You can put Smoak at first and have a neutral 1B, or you can bleed 11 runs with Edwin.

Smoak @ 1B = -12.5 defensive value +

Edwin @ DH = -17.5 defensive value = -30 for the team.

Edwin @ 1B = -23.5 defensive value +

Smoak @ DH = -17.5 defensive value = -41 for the team

Part of me just wants to see a more talented player at first base, but if they make upgrades at a couple of the 2B/LF/RP holes then I'd be fine with Smoak and honestly, I'm kind of intrigued about how he would do in a full season at the Rogers Centre.

Also, it'll be nice to have a decent defensive 1B with the way Reyes' throws are spraying around at this point in his career. I think Donaldson is a bit of a loose cannon as well.

With Smoak's tiny salary, he's still highly mobile and even viable as a bench player.

Some posters and fangraphs are telling me he's not very good defensively. He passes my eye test, granted only during Felix's starts. Plus he is 6'4, so should be passable at the very worst.

The defensive value that you see on Fangraphs includes the positional adjustment, which is -12.5 runs per 600PA for 1B.

His UZR/150 games is pretty much zero - which means he's an average first baseman.

I don't know why Fangraphs changed their default defensive display. It made more sense IMO to just show UZR so you could see defensive skill at their given position in any one year.

Scouts like Smoak even more than that though I think. He had/has a rep as a very good defensive 1B.

Everything AA has done the last 4 years has been building around Joey Bats. I don't think he'll wear another uniform.

Bats for Tulo, Reyes to LF, Saunders to RF. Bingo.

AA getting rid of all the pouty, snarky players - Lind, Janssen, Lawrie, Gose, Happ

Who's next

...and everyone of those players was overvalued by the casual fan...

f***ing AA is a f***ing genius this offseason

I don't mind giving Smoak a chance at 1B/DH, especially after the Jays additions of Donaldson, Martin and Saunders. I think the lineup will be fine.

Smoak isn't stupid. He knows he can hit and hit well at the Rogers Centre He is going to use it as a launching pad for his career, and become one of the biggest power hitters in the game

not sure if this split is out there

does anyone know smoaks numbers as a lefty vs rhp on the road

those numbers over 400+ at bats would be very nice from a 7 hitter

G AB PA H 1B 2B 3B HR R RBI BB IBB SO HBP SF SH GDP SB CS AVG

Away vs L 177 330 366 84 53 17 0 14 34 43 33 1 68 1 2 0 4 0 1 .255

Away vs R 247 682 765 159 107 23 0 29 79 84 77 1 193 3 3 0 16 0 0 .233

Away vs L wRC+ 111

Away vs R wRC+ 99

not a great average but still good production overall

he doesn't need to be exclusive to rhp as his numbers vs lhp aren't outstanding either, but valencias bat needs to be in vs lhp

maybe smoak vs rhp exclusively will bring up his average but the power is there for sure

could knock in a lot of runs with all the high OBP guys in front of him
