Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Sanchez or Norris will be the 5th starter unless we get another one in a trade or FA
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 He fits too well as a closer right now. We need a closer. He's proven himself as a closer. We have no other legit closer. He's gonna be closer people. But it's probably in their best interest long term to give him a shot at 5th spot. You never know, Marcus wouldn't be where he is now if he didn't get the opportunity.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Im really interested to see Martin catch Sanchez. Navarro barely ever called breaking balls with Sanchez on the mound and Martin has a reputation as a good game caller. Also interested to see how Martin frames Sanchez because that 2 seamer is hard for anyone to catch.

Caper Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Sanchez for starter. Everyone thought he was going to fail in the Pen last year... he was fine. He'll be fine this year.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 I think Martin called more fast balls than most catchers last year. That could just be noise... Pirates have a lot of pitchers that have great fastballs. I would expect Martin to call more breaking balls than Navarro did for Sanchez.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 So, if anyone wants to check it out, I just dug up a (g)old video. Aaron Sanchez versus Austin Hedges from behind home plate back from the Lansing days. Solid quality. Sanchez started this game. Was throwing heat with a ton of movement but couldn't control it at all, walked, Hedges took him deep off the wall in his second AB and he was done. Mute it, volume is s***, but quality is good.

My reply was that Martin called one of the highest number of fastballs of any catcher and you say it could just be because those pitchers have great fastballs. Isn't Sanchez known for his great, heavily sinking fastball? Wouldn't it follow then that Martin would also continue to call a high number of fastballs for Sanchez?
Eddiek19 Verified Member Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Pretty sure it was an organizational concept in Pittsburgh that lead to the high number of fastballs Martin called, moreso than just "Martin loves putting 1 finger down."
