Paying free agent prices for a RH power hitter with no other real skills seems like a terrible idea when you play your home games in Safeco.

It's really like buying a new car. Sticker price might be $57M but as soon as you bring that thing home, the most someone is going to give you for it might be half that...

weird how you didn't post about the Donaldson signing

I've been in Buffalo all weekend watching the Bills win. And BTW, the Donaldson deal will be a big boost to the Blue Jays, and a huge upgrade over Lawrie, who can't stay healthy.

Pretty sure it's a concern for them.

Because its about total dollars to these guys rather than AAV. If Cruz got the 4th year and more total money, with the same PED taint, no defense, and 4 years older, Melky will most likely not take a 3 year deal, even if its at a higher AAV.

Melky doesn't hit 30-40 HRs though.

Cruz doesnt really either, save for last season and one season like 8 years ago. At age 35 onward, I dont see him doing it again either, especially in Safeco.

I read somewhere he averages 37hr/162 games. Last year he played a full season (159) as they O's used him sparingly in the OF. Mariners could get a very good return on him if they keep him as DH.

Sure, but signing someone whose skill set is a terrible match for your home park is still a pretty dubious decision.

#Mariners aren't done. They would prefer to have Cruz serve as DH. So they're now looking for find a right fielder.

Could still be in the mix for Leche

Ackley or Saunders would be a great fit in Toronto. Ackley was great defensively at 2B when he played there so he could fill either of the 2 positions of need right now. Im sure AA has made multiple calls to the Mariners as he is always checking in about players.

Justice still has Orioles #1 in power rankings even after Cruz gone.

Well it is an Orioles writer...Cruz really doesn't move the needle much and when you expect Machado and Wieters back they have a really good team. But its pointless saying which team is better than "x" because there is still the offseason and a teams will look very different in April compared to now.

Agreed, although Cruz certainly helped considering Davis' nosedive this year. Speaking of, they have no idea which Chris Davis is going to show up next season. What a downward spiral he was on this year, then capped off the season with a suspension.

If cruz and his power bat is worth than I don't expect melly to get more than 2/28 offers

As an accountant, you have poor judgment in finances.

Why is everyone always so gitty about the possibility of giving up assets for Saunders? Canadian love?

Dude is in his physical prime, is a career 110 wRC+ hitter, can play D, has power and speed, strong projections, and would probably be pretty cheap given the situation (everybody and their mother knows he's getting dealt before the season).

When you say physical prime, do you mean knee hyperextension, shoulder soreness, and spent two stints on the disabled list because of a bad A/C joint in his shoulder and was lost for 50 games with an abdominal strain? Or the fact that he's 28?

He's Peter Forsberg.

And if you can acquire Peter Forsberg at a discount, you do it.

You really obfuscated your point with that last line. Are you saying you're the 1 person in the world who wouldn't want to acquire Forsberg at any given point during his hockey career?

He got hurt a lot last year, sure, but in the two years prior he played over 130 games. I guess the shoulder issues in his career have been sort of recurring, but it's not like he's a pitcher.

Would anyone be willing to entertain going after both Ackley and Saunders at the cost of…. Jose?

Lets say you get Ackley and Saunders. You still need more value back to justify dealing Jose, so what if you add another piece like Iwakuma? You get back a front of the rotation starter on a 1 year deal while filling two needs while being able to still re-sign Melky for LF.

On Saunders, isn't AA trying to shy away from injury prone players?

I wouldn't be scared of acquiring a platoon bat with a lot of upside. It's fairly easy to replace one side of the platoon if an injury happens. You got Dirks at AAA that could fill, maybe even a Dwight Smith Jr. later in the season if he plays well.

I was trying to find a body to body comparison, he popped in my head. Not talent to talent I guess.

I just don't like the idea of giving up assets for a glass man. An outfielder in his prime age shouldn't have that many injuries.

Hey fellas,

*scroll scroll scroll to the bottom and....*

Should the Mariners think on a larger scale, Melky Cabrera remains a free agent, and the price for parting with him is now slightly diminished, as Seattle would only need part with its second pick after forfeiting the No. 19 pick to sign Cruz.

In addition to the names listed, the Mariners do have a fairly strong in-house candidate in the form of Michael Saunders. However, Saunders is a left-handed bat and his relationship with the organization was strained after some postseason comments from GM Jack Zduriencik and manager Lloyd McClendon. The Mariners were said to be shopping Saunders as recently as last month’s GM Meetings, and those talks could of course be revisited at next week’s Winter Meetings.
