Beane says that #Athletics were pretty adamant they weren't going to deal Donaldson but #BlueJays essentially overwhelmed them.

THATS OVERWHELMING?

You guys are assuming Lawrie will never stay healthy. Clearly Donaldson is the best 3B in the AL. Last 2 years best in Baseball. Can anyone argue at this point that he might be the best. Somebody needs to look up his charts to see how many of his fly balls in Oakland would be homeruns in Rogers Centre. It would be nice to add a big lefty bat to break up all the RHB. Lind would look nice right now.

Jays are going to go from horrible against lefties to lefty killers. Bautista and Donaldson were the 3rd and 8th best hitters in baseball against LHP. That might be enough for teams to change rotations around.

Aw jeez

Jeter flying into the stands ain't got nothing on this

The difference is we aren't getting an injury prone ex-star and a bunch of expensive old guys, but a young controllable best 3B in baseball. Those don't come too often

I wouldn't call Donaldson young but he's definitely a superstar. Donaldson seems a lot younger than he actually is since it took him so long to get to the big leagues. 29 going into the season.

Guys. I can't believe I fell asleep early and woke-up to this, it's totally amplifying the surrealness factor. I just read the entire 15 pages of this thread to allow myself time to react rationally.

AA has balls of f***ing steal. He just traded off arguably our most popular player (yes arguably more popular than even Bautista), in the last 2-3 years Lawrie when healthy probably put more fans in the seats than any other player (it's arguable at least). AA is in it to win it, or just doesn't give a f***.

Lawrie has great defense, particularly at third, but Donaldson's defense is an actual thing of beauty... he may even be better than Longoria at third. I absolutely love Josh Donaldson. Not everyone wanted to admit because he was a Blue Jay but Lawrie is a douche and with Lind gone probably had no place in our CH.

I hope Donaldson's defense translates well on turf (does anyone know from memory how he does on turf?). His bat is going take off at RC.

Lawrie on the other hand, his defense may improve at Coliseum but his HR power is going to drop off (and he was showing real signs of it this year).

I liked Nolin but he was a whatever 'prospect', Graveman was not one of our top prospects, and Barreto is too far down in the minors to be an actual threat yet anyway.

Aw jeez

See, lawrie would go out for the season in his first leap. That's my problem with him

Martin is going to make all our starters better, especially Buehrle.

Martin is going to make the Blue Jays win 2 world series this year, and he's even going to make the Maple Leafs win the stanley cup..

oh s*** lol I did not know that, I thought he was like 26

Just saw this scrolling along the ticker on SN west.... Kinda hard to wrap your head around but getting Donaldson is huge.

The package we gave up.... I'm pretty okay with it.

I like the trade and the signing of Martin. The more (good) white guys on the team the better. :P

However, I am haunted by the ghosts of Marlins past. We were getting a number 2 or even a number 1 pitcher (Josh Johnson), a number 3-4 pitcher (Buerhle), the best SS in baseball (Reyes and yes he was described this way after his time at the Mets by many writers/fans), and some useful spare parts in Bonifacio and John Buck. All we had to give up was Alvarez, Hechavarria, DeSclafani, Marisnick and Nicolino.

We all know how this turned out. I refer and defer to this excellent article: http://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2014/2/20/5429994/hindsight-is-20-20-was-the-marlins-trade-a-mistake

So, I'm not going to jump on board with this just yet. Not. Just. Yet. Lawrie, Graveman, Sean Nolin and Barreto. We'll see. We will see.

The more (good) white guys on the team the better? That right there, makes you a piece of s***

Bareto must be what got them excited and Lawrie can at least give them a passable player with a couple depth arms for good measure. Still a terrible trade for the A's but Beane must have some sort of plan here.

Knowing Beane he'll probably ride out Graveman's groundball tendencies in that park and then get a good return, I might be dissapointed as an A's fan but knowing Beane's track record I'd still trust him.

And there was literally no heads up on this until it happened.... No rumours about Donaldson being in play... Nothing about LAwrie being shopped....

Chill dude. He was just joking.

#BlueJays first asked about Donaldson in October. #Athletics said they wouldn’t move him. TOR circled back last weekend and things took off.

THATS OVERWHELMING?

Donaldson has colon cancer, Ebola or HIV? - NO

Then, shut up Beane

Beane is a believer in projections. It's that simple, he's not going to do the whole "he can't stay healthy" thing. He's going to say what does he produce in a healthy season. If Lawrie gets anywhere near the projections the deal makes sense for Oakland. Projections take away the bias...Toronto fans one way or another have a Lawrie bias.
