HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 I don't see Lester as a guy who would want to play in Toronto. Lester made comments that he will take into consideration where his family will feel comfortable, and I just don't see Toronto being a part of that. What other FA pitching is available? If we can't sign any, we may have to explore the option of pestering Amaro...
Brenner Verified Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Would be a perfect fit for this team, then trade Dickey/Thole for a 2B or OF.

Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 I think this is the source: http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2014/11/17/sources-blue-jays-continue-to-show-interest-in-jon-lester/
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 17, 2014 Author Posted November 17, 2014 Scherzer, Shields, Liriano, Santana, McCarthy. One of the latter three makes sense IMO. I would love it if AA got Shields, would be a great addition IMO.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 I'd rather have Scherzer, but even the idea that we might have $100M more to blow is entirely fappable.

At this point the window is now, so if AA lands an upgrade for the rotation, he then has plenty of trade chips to dangle for an infielder or outfielder.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 steve simmons Rumours that the Jays are in on Jon Lester and Andrew Miller are fantasy. Haven't talked to either player to date.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 That pretty much rules out Lester. He's the best on the market. I also think Scherzer can get 6 years cause he's Boras. We can definitely get Shields for 5 years. McCarthy I would be fine signing since he won't cost a huge amount. He'll probably net 3 years, but want 4

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Didn't Lester make comments after he was traded that suggested he would be returning to Boston? I don't expect us to even be competitive in an offer for him but it would be interesting.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 I would love it if AA got Shields, would be a great addition IMO. Shields is pretty much my favourite player That would be great.
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 I would LOVE for the jays to get lester, but sadly I cannot see it, cannot see AA outbidding anyone else, and cannot see Lester wanting to come here.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 I don't know if i want Shields because i think i would get rather annoyed with Buck using the term "Big game James" every 5 days at about 100 times per game..... There is value in that i think.

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 I'm sure they're "interested" in him like every other team in the game but the level might be different not to mention Lester's side too. Would be nice since he's proven in the AL East and it would be nice to have a proven guy but I doubt it happens at least not without the Jays having to open the pocket book or trade someone away for cash like some have mentioned. I'm sure AA is being aggressive seeing who he might have a shot at signing or at least the terms to see who he can rule out on the FA market and see about trades or waiver deals. The team could use a true Ace (what team can't?) but with the money just given to Martin I can't see it happening since Lester should get a nice paycheck especially since he's not tied to a draft pick unless they're going to back load the deals which could be a problem later on.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Stroman (#2 ceiling) Norris (#2 ceiling) Sanchez (#2 ceiling) Hutchison (#3 ceiling) Graveman (End-rotation Inning eaten ceiling) We don't need long term expensive starter (Bautista, EE will walk soon)

The Jays aren't the only team with pitching prospects in the majors.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 McCarthy for a market value deal plz.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 If their ceiling is five years then Shields is probably more attainable. McCarthy and Liriano are the most realistic though. Isn't McCarthy a fan of advanced stats? Maybe having an elite framer will interest him.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Why not Masterson on a short term cheap deal? Bigtime groundbller, won't break the bank and has a legit chance to be a bounce-back candidate providing very good value. The fact that he'll likely be looking for a short term deal to re-establish his value is a major plus.

I like the idea, but I don't think he'll be quite as cheap as we all hope... http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/11/multiple-teams-interested-in-justin-masterson.html
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 If the Jays are still "in their window" and serious about trying to win and make the playoffs, they're going to have to do more than make a huge signing and then sit back with their fingers crossed again with the old "if everything works out and everyone plays to their skill level/ceiling then we should have no problem..." Bringing in a proven MLB caliber arm shouldn't be out of the question if they're someone who can stick around with the young pack and help win now and teach the youngsters a few things. Hutch, Stro showed what they have but it doesn't mean they'll reproduce or even improve on it. Sanchez is still in the air on where he'll be. They may have high ceilings but no guarantee they'll come back as good or better especially now that the league has seen them and will adjust. Plus anytime you can add to your rotation with a solid arm it's a plus. It comes down to what the Jays plan on doing. Try to win this year, they'll try to add another decent arm. Let the young pitcher pitch them sit back and see.

Stroman is coming into his first full year, Hutch was inconsistent last season, sanchez is an unknown. Sounds like a bunch of hopes and dreams, they don;t normally pan out.
