Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Melky your getting a LF/DH Martin your getting a C/SS i think it is obvious.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 no way in hell that martin plays SS. but that being said Martin is much better defensively at C
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Depend the term of the deal. Same among years: Martin over Melky.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Author Posted November 13, 2014 I guess I should have had neither as the 3rd option. I like martin but 15 mil is too much and those last couple of years will probably suck

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Is this a serious question? Obviously Martin..
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Jon lester or j.a happ?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Yeah, this is not even a debate. Martin is a clearly superior player, and far more likely to meet or exceed the value of his contract than Melky is. I don't think we could get Martin for less than five years though. I think 5/70 or 5/75 might get him.

Laika Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 To make it a tiny bit more fair, should be more like 5/$75 for Russ and 3/$39 for Melk
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 So does signing Martin mean that Pillar and Dirks are full time outfielders?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 So suppose Jays sign Martin, so Navarro is now DH, what then. Lineup still has major holes, with almost no offense coming out of 2nd base, LF, CF, and probably 3rd base (Lawrie will be on the DL soon enough I am sure)
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Author Posted November 13, 2014 C'mon Kgm1, it's Martin hands down, not to mention, where are you getting 4/50 for Melky? Wasn't the term he's looking for 3/50? 3/50 Christ I thought he wanted 4/50 , He isn't getting that. Yes I knew martin would be favored by most . I really like Martin , I just don't like the 4th year for either
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 So does signing Martin mean that Sillar and Dirks are full time outfielders? Martin + Pillar/Dirks > Melky + Navarro
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Martin + Pillar/Dirks > Melky + Navarro You can't seriously think that. Just to fix our defensive catching problems you are willing to create a huge hole. And for what reason are both not being pursued. If we can trade away Burly, and then sign both would that not be even better? Why do we have to make either/or choices
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Author Posted November 13, 2014 Neither + 2 first round picks. Your not losing two picks unless you sign both. but I should have put in the 3rd option of neither
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Can we just ban the 4 people who voted for Melky?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Will 4 years be enough to get Martin? He probably will get 5 from someone. He will be 32 before the start of the next season. He has a fair amount of miles on his body. He had a great offensive year last year, but I highly doubt he puts up those numbers again. Almost all his value comes from defense. There is some injury risk with Martin...he's going to be an awfully expensive dh if he can't play defense towards the end of that contract. How well will his defense at 36 or 37 compare to last year's defense when he was 31?

kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 14, 2014 Author Posted November 14, 2014 Yep,give the money to the Cuban OFer and keep the two picks >>>>> better than either. Got it on the two picks but Much rather have Moncada. Left fielders are a hell of a lot easier to replace than a 3rd baseman/2nd baseman and in spite of the 100 % tax he will be cheaper.

Bonus likely will be $30million (minimum) -tax effectively doubles to $60million Also Moncada is a long term fix. Won't start 2015 in majors. Maybe 2016 before he'd debut
shortstop Verified Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Martin - $15M, Aoki - $8M = $23M....Trade Navarro bring back say $2M in salary - $20M add on + lose 1st rounder (while getting 1 for Melk) & ideally, still need a legit 2B Lowrie - $10M, Aoki - $8m = $18M add on & 2 1st rounders Melk - $14M, Lowrie - $10M = $24M add on & keep 1st rounder I like option 1 b/c Martin is one of those difference makers imo...but option 2 isn't bad - much better defense but perhaps not enough bite throughout the lineup...option #2 with Martin would be a dream but that's say $33M of add on salary (well, $25M taking away Melk's $8M)... all that said, don't see AA pulling the trigger on Lowrie for multiple years since his boy Devo is waiting in the wings at 2B.... heck, there's word of Drew getting only $4M...heck, i'd try to overpay him as a 1 year stop-gap....so Drew, Aoki & Martin = say $22M in add on salary...
shortstop Verified Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I hear ya, but if you can overpay Drew, say $6M, you can get what Lowrie does & only as a 1 year stop-gap
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 14, 2014 Author Posted November 14, 2014 Lowrie's the one guy i'd target even with Travis in the mix. He covers the SS position and eliminates the need to carry a Kawasaki or Goings on the bench. He might even take over full time at SS bumping Reyes to second or even third if a Lawrie 2B, Lowrie SS, and Reyes 3B ends up being the best defensive alignment. Lowrie can't play shortstop on Grass so I don't know how he can expect to be passable on our turf. I really covet Martin but he is going to get that 5th year and I don't do that .

kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 15, 2014 Author Posted November 15, 2014 Can he play 2B? Always been talked about that he needs to move to 2nd. he has played 58 games at 2nd with a UZR of 0.4 I think he is the kind of guy that his bat has to be above average.

No question that he is an offence first kind of player, but if he can even play a somewhat adequate 2B, it could be a good move for us. Honestly, all we need is an average player for the next year or two for this to be a step forward.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 15, 2014 Author Posted November 15, 2014 Does anyone think AA is building this team more toward 2016 with his moves ?
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Does anyone think AA is building this team more toward 2016 with his moves ? I'm not sure Ken, there is good and bad for both 2015/2016. Personally I think his job is on the line for 2015 in this market. He will put a contender on the field or find a new job.
