Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Earlier this morning, reports indicated that the Mariners are interested in, if not prioritizing Victor Martinez (as well as Hanley Ramirez), which meshes with previous reports that the team will likely show interest. As one of the top free agents on the market, Martinez will likely find his name swirling about the rumor mill, and we’ll keep track of today’s V-Mart talk here… The Blue Jays are now among the teams interested in Martinez, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Though the team perhaps has a greater need in the infield, Heyman writes that the trade of Adam Lind has opened a door for Martinez to fit into the picture in Toronto. Heyman hears that the Tigers and Mariners are the other two primary suitors in the early stages, noting that Martinez is high on Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik’s wish list. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/11/blue-jays-interested-in-victor-martinez.html
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I don't believe that for a second. Octagon is well known for dropping false rumours.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I find it a little peculiar that there seems to be more transparency in the Jays off season. As if they want to show us they are in on players so that if nothing happens they can say well you saw we were in on a lot of people.

Like what happens when good international players get posted yet we sign no one?
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Oh god please keep VMart away from Seattle. Doesn't this moron have enough DH types?

This is exactly what I was thinking, already 3 big names circulating around this team. I do think AA will make a big splash (and no I don't mean him jumping into a pool), but this has marketing ploy written all over it IMO. Sign one big name and have a bunch of names rumoured and watch the casuals eat it up and help pre sales.

I 100% believe they are talking with those two...I just don't believe they will be in the right ballpark
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 This ******** is getting annoying
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Is that V-Mart's representation? It was...I don't think anything has changed there. So many rumours get leaked about their clients and they always seem to be in trade rumours (Miguel Montero, Hammel, Gallardo, Lewis, Goins...okay so not all their clients)
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 This is stupid. Any Blue Jay fan who has paid any attention during the AA/Beeston era has to roll their eyes at the notion of the Jays signing any of these guys. They will offer 3-years to guys who end up getting 7 and 8 year deals, then say no no no, its not money, we were competitive on dollars, it was term. Im getting irked thinking about listening to Beeston and AA spin this crap again in a few months.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 No idea why'd get vmart if we traded Lind and want martin. I mean if I had to choose between c martin dh navarro and c navarro dh Martinez I think its pretty obvious which option is better

I 100% believe they are talking with those two...I just don't believe they will be in the right ballpark I heard about the Sandoval interest a month ago, but I didn't think it was real at the time. Still not sure if it's real interest and by real I mean willing to extend a fair market value offer. That being said I can't see AA letting Melky go and then not signing or trading for an equal or better talent, it would be a PR disaster and likely his final year if so.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2014 Author Posted November 10, 2014 Jays real list: Position 1- Valbuena 2- Ackley 3- Denorfia 4- Morse 5- Ellis 6- Callaspo 7- Ludwick 8- DelmonY Bullpen 1- Grilli 2- Meek 3- Carlos Oviedo 4- Stauffer

He'll end up trading for someone, and overpaying in terms of prospect assets like he did in the Marlins deal, when those players couldve been had the year before for just money. I don't get why value lines up in AA's mind on these stupid trades, but never does in the free agent market.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 It's hard to believe anything, but VMart suits this team the same way Ortiz did a couple of years ago. Shorter term player who can hit in between (or wherever) Bautista/EE. Thing is, if they sign him then we might be seeing Gose/Pompey everyday in the OF.
Caper Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Melky and V.Mart would be nice.
wardhenke1 Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Does anybody believe we have the budget to land one or more big names in the free agent market without moving salary out first? The funny thing is, I don't know why Rogers spent such a shitload of money on hockey; honestly I was flicking through the TSN's and Sportsnet channels the other day and no word of a lie there were 4 or 5 games blacked out. What was the point of the $5 billion?

What was the point of the $5 billion? Nope, I predict they move Buehrle. The more you think about it, there's not a lot of scenarios where they will compete next year given the budget implications. AA will have to get very creative.

GNick49 Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Have to give up first round pick on Martinez. Plus cannot play him on turf
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Have to give up first round pick on Martinez. Plus cannot play him on turf You lose a pick with Melky too though. You lose the pick that someone would give you if they signed him and playing Melky on turf isn't necessarily more desirable.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Victor Martinez would be the #6 priority on this team: #1. Quality defense-first MIF who can play everyday and has a workable bat #2. Melky or some kind of OF solution that doesn't have the year start with Gose, Pompey and Pillar as the three guys filling up CF and LF. #3. Catcher upgrade #4. Another MIF to cover for injuries/guys subbing into the DH role. We have to assume somebody who is good enough to cover 100 games 400 PA. #5. Relief pitching #6. Victor Martinez #7. Ace (Long shot and expensive)
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Will V-Mart play behind the plate lol?
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Will V-Mart play behind the plate lol? i don't think anyone would be surprised if his defensive stats were still better than navarro's
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 i don't think anyone would be surprised if his defensive stats were still better than navarro's How was his pitch framing before? I know durability would be an issue with him playing behind the plate. He'd likely have to rotate between 1B/DH and C however. Doubt though he wants to catch again.

Ace (Long shot and expensive) ?? Relief pitching ahead of Victor?? No position is more important than another according to math. If a DH will add more wins then a reliever you take the DH. Victor will likely add a couple wins. That is more important then moves that WON'T add a couple wins, but less important then moves that will. So if we can get Troy Tuwlo for SS and move Reyes somehow... then that is more important then Victor. If we are talkiing Brandon Phillops for second it may not be. And by the way where the hell will you find a backup MIF that is good enough to DH in his spare time??
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Victor Martinez is projected at like 2.5 wins, which seems pretty fair. Lind and a proper platoon partner probably give you 2 wins. This would be a really inefficient (bad) sequence of moves.
