I remember some people had Levi Michael to the Jays because he was an advanced middle infield bat. That guy sure busted fast.

I saw that bust happening a mile away. That "profile" of player is so easy to see as failing, and there is seemingly one of these in basically every draft: I'm talking about the clearly-not-elite "experienced" collegiate shortstop who either profiles as average at best offensively, or average at best defensively (sometimes both LOL), yet whom people still proclaim as a first round talent despite them CLEARLY not possessing the tools to ever be more than an average or replaceable MLB player. This player typically struggles his junior season after lofty preseason expectations; but they'll always have supporters because "they hit really well as a sophomore" or something similar.

Levi Michael, Deven Marrero, Russ Adams, Christian Colon, Grant Green, Reese Havens are all examples of this "guy".

Still never been more disappointed by a draft than the Jays not ending up with Giolito. Then again I'm like 10 so

I really wanted Gray, lol. When Gray went off the board, I wanted Guerrieri or Barnes. Felt like a consolation prize when Gray went to the A's and we got a guy who was committed to the same school that Gray was coming from.

And wow, 2008 was a garbage draft class. As good as 2005 was, 2008 was just as bad.

Really? I think 2008 was decent. Beckham obviously was bad but Alvarez, Hosmer and Posey were very elite advanced bats entering the draft. Matusz too as a pitcher and he became an elite prospect.

Plenty of guys became legit major leaguers: Alonso, Beckham, Smoak, Lawrie, Davis, Cashner, Cole, Chisenhall, Lynn, Miley, etc.

As heartbroken as I still am about that, it blows my mind to this day that he even got all the way to 16. That's probably what made it worse. I didn't think he slip past the top 10; biggest cocktease of all time.

It's pretty crazy that the Nationals managed to nab the pre-season highest-rated prospect in four straight drafts: Strasburg, Harper, Rendon, Giolito.

I get over Giolito by realizing that had we actually landed him we very likely don't end up with Stroman with the very next pick. With Giolito being a well-over-slot signee I doubt we would have risked #18 on Stroman who was actually falling himself from where he was "projected" to potentially go. We probably instead go with an under-slot kid at #18 to help make up Giolito's bonus.

That second list you named, the plenty of guys who became legit major leaguers. It's a really mediocre list to be honest. Three good/great first rounders and a handful of decent major leaguers, you'll probably get that in most classes, but look at any other year prior, and the list of notable guys is just generally a lot longer. Since we're talking about 2005 already, here's a partial list of some names that were in that class for comparison:

1st rounders: Upton, Gordon, Zimmerman, Braun, Romero, Tulowitzki, McCutchen, Bruce, Ellsbury, Garza, Lowrie, Buchholz

Notables: Headley, Yunel, Gardner, Brantley, Pearce, Jackson, Bourjos, Joyce, Garcia, Romo, Hanson

Others: Reimold, Wood, Slowey, Hundley, Hellickson, Estrada, Niese, Venable, Richard, Lannan, Badenhop, Morrison

Selected but not signed: Posey, Lincecum, Axford, Davis, Avila, Cashner, Worley, Miley, Davis, Jennings, Smoak, Alonso, Hunter, Bailey, Alvarez, Fister, Lynn, Matusz

This is true, but what if they took both Stroman and Giolito, and instead saved money by not taking Smoral way overslot? Pains me to think about that though, so I'll go with what you said, lol.

I agree. That's probably my favorite draft class since I started religiously following the Jays, not only because I remember how highly touted so many guys in that class were, but also because it had the added bonus that every guy had a great name, lmao. I'd say 1-9 all have awesome baseball names.

If you wanna see a monster draft class, look at 2005.

Though, while 2005 was insanely top heavy, I do think 2011 could end up being one of the deepest drafts ever.

2011 was by far the draft I followed the most, at least from a college point of view. I had probably 15 video subscriptions to watch college games and of course I went to Houston to watch Rendon play. Mariners, Pirates, DBacks, O's and Royals entire FO's should have been fired on the spot for passing up Rendon (one series and I predicted HOF'er...I stand by that today). This is why you don't make pre-draft deals (Royals).

Divorced in 2011. Had a few years of The Bachelor over baseball to make up for.

so the reported deal fell through or what? Don't the teams not let players go to anymore showcases if they agree to a predeadline deal?

That should be the case...

Time to do some digging

We need to get Ang a budget to investigate these things. I'd chip in if I thought he wouldn't spend it on a hooker for his mule.
