KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Again!! Good joke but the distortion in the photo really hurts my brain.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Rogers did this to JP Riccardi too . He told them they couldn't afford Wells. He was dead against signing Wells. They gave him a budget and said it did not include the Wells deal then pull the rug out from him. I see a pattern here with Rogers. I hated JPR but he was right in the Wells decision. I would suggest the next GM see this history and not go whole hog like AA did when ownership wants to make a splash ie the Mets trade. People can't forget that Rogers is a publicly traded company. At the end of 2012 they were doing pretty well. Since then the past 7 quarters have been bad on cable and absolutely brutal on wireless businesses. If Rogers' forecast comes in more than $10M below EBITDA (net income) analyst projections for 2015, the stock would probably get hammered 10 or 15%. The easiest way to pick some of that up is to squeeze the baseball team's salaries. Similar stuff happened in the JPR era when Rogers was battling the debt issues. The Jays baseball decisions regarding salary and Rogers' historical stock price are highly correlated. This picture will sum this up well:
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 The Toronto Maple Leafs, which are owned in part by Rogers Communications, signed defenseman Dion Phaneuf to a seven-year contract. As the Canadian Baseball Network’s Bob Elliott reports, agent Scott Boras wonders why the Blue Jays, which are owned in full by Rogers Communications, don’t sign players to seven-year deals. “If they can give one of their hockey players a seven-year deal, why can’t they give a seven-year deal to a baseball player?” asks Boras. Of course, the last Blue Jay to receive a seven-year contract was outfielder Vernon Wells, which might provide a partial answer to that question. The Jays haven’t been very active in recent years in signing key free agents to shorter deals, either, although they’ve made some splashy moves via trade.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I'm one who is in full agreement with the 5 year max. Right now I can't think of one 7 year deal that has been a good sign . Boras keeps crying and the jays will Never sign one of his players.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I won't be at all Vik. I think it is his job to lose in ST right now. Course that all depends on the budget and if Melky walks. If AA has more money than i think he has and can attract some free agents then I can see him at least starting in AAA. It would make sense but I still see the budget being cut and Pompey with a good ST would add the hype AA needs. Wonder if the Royals would be interested in Lind. Rumor is they aren't going to exercise Butler,s option and they will need a starter too so dollars could be tight . not sure they would move a BP piece after their stellar playoff run. It's possible but I think Gose is likely the starting CF and we now see a platoon in LF. Dirks/Mayberry in LF Gose/Dirks in CF actually works perfectly in terms of platoons. Gose only starts against RHP and Mayberry only against LHP. Dirks ends up a regular in this scenario which sucks, but I can see it happening in order to fill a bigger need in the IF.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Also Boras, which of your clients could we sign for 7 years and $49M? Maybe the $7Maav has something to do with it.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Is this move somehow related to the situation with Melky, improving the Jays bargaining position or increasing the chance Melky will reject the QO? I'm basing this on an assumption Jays are costing costs and will either sign Melky at a discount or hope he rejects the QO as it is too rich for Jays blood

If Dirks could play center he would still be in Detroit
Chappy Community Moderator Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 That would suck defensively against LHP. Gose is the only CF. If Dirks could play center he would still be in Detroit It's not ideal at all defensively, but I wouldn't be shocked if it happened. The other option is to also have Pillar in the mix and utilize Mayberry at 1B/DH. That only leaves one backup infielder though after you count the backup catcher.

Laika Community Moderator Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Dirks / Chris Young platoon in LF would be pretty excellent and cheap. Pompey in CF with a Gose / Chris Young platoon as the fallback option. Maybe trade Pillar or Gose if someone likes them, or just store one of them in AAA for depth. (Pillar is worse methinks). Probably have to keep Gose so CF could be covered with absolute defensive competence. Although it's possible that I'm underrating Pillar and he's actually > Chris Young right now. I dunno

I dunno Chris Young? When fangraphs upgrade the contributions of the defense in the WAR, you will hate Chris Young and Gose.

When he blasted Rogers last year about not adding payroll they probably told Beeston , Don't deal with that guy! In a similar situation where a contractor said disparaging remarks about the Oil company i worked for I told my foreman not to hire that company . I blacklisted them and it cost them tons of work .

That leaves Valencia out of the mix. i look for a bench of Goins or Izturis, Valencia, An OF, and Thole . Don't see how we can get away without him with Lawrie,s history. Unless of course he signs a 3rd baseman like Headley. Highly doubt he has the budget for that. I really believe Moogy gets his wish and Lind is gone but two OF,s on the bench just doesn't work unless there is a very good Lawrie replacement in AAA.

Likely slightly cheaper, and much better.

When he blasted Rogers last year about not adding payroll they probably told Beeston , Don't deal with that guy! more like 4 years later he's getting his revenge on Beest. He knows damn well that Rogers told AA to spend in 2012 because they were taking a PR s***-kicking in getting the blame for the team's inadequacies. Well with the growing anti-Rogers movement happening again, Boras is throwing a little fuel on the fire. He's such a beautiful petty little man.

Well Rogers deserves all the hate he can throw but it still means they won't do business with him. Not good business on his part IMO. Then again maybe he knows he is out with them and is just getting his shots in .
jayswin11 Verified Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Speaking of gambles, I wouldn't mind the JAYS making one on Chad Billingsley.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Speaking of gambles, I wouldn't mind the JAYS making one on Chad Billingsley. Why? Coming off an injury he'd be maybe the third or fourth SP option for this team, not suitable for an "ace" role. SP depth is one of the few true strengths of the club. While coming into the spring with 6 viable starters is not a bad thing, I'd rather have the Jays get the Chad Billingsley-equivalent of a middle infielder.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Pompey will be starting as of now....my guess Melky, Pompey, Bautista
