Just saw this...wow!!! Just goes to show us all how we should cherish our every moment with our loved ones. My condolences to the Taveras family as well as to the family of the young lady that died alongside him.

Makes me reflect on my 10 year old and think of how fast he's growing although my working so much and being away from him probably makes it seem faster than it really is.

I can only try to imagine how the parents of these 2 must feel right now. RIP.

For some reason, I think we all think of these famous people and athletes as above human. But, when sad and tragic events happen like these, it brings a reality check that they aren't just superstar athletes. That they are human and they can die, albeit way too soon. Like other people have mentioned, enjoy everyday and cherish it.

Sad. Completely preventable event. Too early to tell for sure until the report comes out, but judging from the shape of that car above and what people are saying on Twitter, this was due to excessive speed. If you want to pay respect to this young man's death, then learn an important lesson from it. Don't speed excessively. Reminds me of the Dany Heatley crash a few years back that killed his friend the lesser-known hockey player.

I'm surprised that Meyiwa's death isn't getting more press.

I was thinking last night how terrible it would have been for 22 year old me to be handed a Ferrari. That's a dangerously powerful machine that I'm sure most people don't respect because 'I've been driving cars for year!'.

I saw people saying RIP Oscar Tavares on a random MLB Instagram posting last night, and also thought it was something related to him striking out or miffing on a fly ball or something. When i did a search, I learned that he had indeed passed. Clearly the grief of his family and friends are more important than baseball, but it really does suck for baseball fans to be robbed of such a burgeoning talent. First Nick Adenhart and now Oscar. Lets hope Alcohol was not a factor as it was with Adenhart's death (killed by a drunk driver).

Secondary, i know, but its terrible news for the Cardinals from a baseball standpoint. I had recently read an article talking about him as the present and future key to the success of the franchise. They're the cardinals, so they'll probably develop another stud in quick order, but after the Allen Craig trade, etc. they had really started to hand over the reins to Oscar. Wonder if this adds another candidate out there for Melky's services.

"I was asked last night to give some words regarding the tragic death of Oscar Taveras, but I just simply couldn't.

"First of all, it felt like a bad dream that could not be real, and when reality kicked in, my words didn't even seem to make sense. To say this is a horrible loss of a life ended too soon would be an understatement. To talk about the potential of his abilities seemed to be untimely. All I wanted to do was get the guys together and be with our baseball family. I know the hurt that comes along with buying into the brotherhood of a baseball team. That hurt is just as powerful as the joys that come with this life. Not to say it is even close to the depth of pain his true family is going through, but the pain itself is just as real. The ache is deep because the relationships were deep, and forged through time and trials.

"To the many fans who have already reached out with condolences, and to the many more who are in mourning, thank you for taking these players in, like they are one of your own. This level of care is what sets our fans apart.

"In my opinion, the word 'love' is the most misused, and misunderstood word in the English language. It is not popular for men to use this word, and even less popular for athletes. But, there is not a more accurate word for how a group of men share a deep and genuine concern for each other. We loved Oscar, and he loved us. That is what a team does, that is what a family does. You will be missed, Oscar."

Single car accident while driving a brand new Camaro.... Speed was more than likely the cause.

Just follow the speed limit. Jesus. So avoidable.

Speeding and in some of those countries, driving laws aren't as stringent as they are here in Canada and the US. Many rules of the road aren't enforced by the police in some of those countries. When I went to Morocco this past August, there were no painted lines on the road in Marrakech, so the whole lane was free for all. Likely speeding was the cause from the looks of the pictures.

That's right!!

I don't really believe that speed causes accidents, it will worsen the impact but not cause it.

Without more information it's hard to know but usually other factors are the main reason.

My mother owns a condo in Sosua, I just found out, apparently Oscar was staying at her private condo complex (Blue Gardens condo in Sosua). She said there was a big storm there yesterday. Apparently another girl died with Oscar and his GF, this is what she told me.

Reaction time is proportional to speed. This is fact.

Yea but why would you need to react to something? If you drive in a straight line then driving 60 or 100 (assuming the road allows for it) shouldn't matter.

If you're taking a turn in 60 instead of 20 then that's a problem but not sure i would classify it as speeding.

If you're trying to correct a mistake you made for a different reason, then yea lower speed would allow you to react better.

What? Stopping distance is proportional to speed.... road geometry and speed limits are designed to allow drivers enough time to avoid or stop before impacting a hazard. Taking into account driver reaction time and tire/pavement friction.

Stopping distance is considerably longer at 100 than at 60

There are some troubling trends developing in this thread. Drawing parallels between the deaths of Nick Adenhart and Oscar Taveras is in poor taste. Nick Adenhart was a passenger in a vehicle struck by a drunk driver, unequivocally a victim. Oscar Taveras was the driver in a single-vehicle accident, which by all indications was due to reckless driving, he's responsible for his own death and that of the passenger, hardly a victim. Both situations are tragic, but the level of culpability couldn't be more different. Then to have a poster suggest that excessive speed (in poor conditions, no less) is not a factor in single-vehicle accidents, come on.

Yeah flafson is pretty dumb. Some of these guys think they are invincible or something and decide to drive like idiots. No matter how many times something like this happens, these people never change their mindset until it's too late.

I went to school with a guy who bragged about how he always drove drunk, took videos of himself while driving drunk. Pretty sure he'll end up dead at some point, or worse end up in jail because he killed someone with his utter stupidity. But until something happens, he'll keep doing what he's doing. Sad.

Almost as bad as Asian drivers...am I right?
