GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I'd welcome Saunders on to this team with open arms. Would be a great add.
GNick49 Verified Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Get your maple boners ready, would replacing the $15 million Melky with the $3 million Saunders be a good move, and what would it take to land him.... From mlbtr: In a lengthy and interesting piece, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times looks at the potentially fractured relationship between the Mariners and Michael Saunders following some comments made by GM Jack Zduriencik at an end-of-season press conference. Asked at the time what he felt about Saunders’ future with the team, Zduriencik said, “…It’s up to Michael. … He was playing well, got hurt, came back, got sick, came back again and did some nice things. But I think what Michael has to do and has to answer this to himself, is ‘how do I prepare myself to play as many games through the course of 162 that I can possibly play without being setback by injury.’ … some of these things need to be handled from a maintenance standpoint where he put himself in a position where he’s able to compete through the course of the season.” Divish spoke to Saunders himself, who declined to comment on the situation. Saunders’ agent, Michael McCann, said it was both “shocking” and “very disappointing.” Said McCann: “These comments don’t reflect Michael Saunders’ work habits. They imply that that he’s lackadaisical.” Part of the trouble, Divish writes, is that Saunders had never before had his work ethic or preparation questioned by the Mariners, and to have that done in a public forum was hurtful. Zduriencik clarified that the comments he made could be applied to any player, and he was adamant to Divish that the organization is not planning on moving on from Saunders. However, he has previously identified corner outfield as a potential area to add some offense. Divish speculates on an offseason trade, though he also notes that even if Saunders is pushed to the role of fourth outfielder, his low salary (he should earn less than $3MM via arbitration) would be an acceptable price for that role, especially given his upside. Over the past three seasons, the former top prospect has batted .248/.320/.423 with 39 homers and 38 steals. I should note that Divish’s entire piece is well worth the read, as this brief write-up doesn’t capture nearly all of the quotes and information he compiled. Corner outfielder with career .685 OPS...why you want him?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 It's hilarious that some Blue Jays fans still live in a world where Gose has decent trade value. Gose with no options = Travis Snider trade value. Maybe a full circle trade and move him to Philly for Brad Lincoln.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 ... and he'd be hitting in a much better park. This must be one of the biggest sabermetric faux-pas out there. You realize this doesn't make him a better (or any more valuable) hitter, right?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 This must be one of the biggest sabermetric faux-pas out there. You realize this doesn't make him a better (or any more valuable) hitter, right? His perceived value would go up, which could a.) make him more expensive or b.) give him higher trade value with dumn GMs. Not that you were arguing anything related to that, just a general point I'm making.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Seattle wants a corner OF that can hit I'd be looking to dangle Bautista and rob them blind
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Seattle wants a corner OF that can hit I'd be looking to dangle Bautista and rob them blind Hi, M's fan here. What would you guys think of Chris Taylor + Michael Saunders + Erasmo Ramirez + James Jones + Brad Miller for Bautista and Lind? Be nice.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Hi, M's fan here. What would you guys think of Chris Taylor + Michael Saunders + Erasmo Ramirez + James Jones + Brad Miller for Bautista and Lind? Be nice. Taijuan Walker, Chris Taylor, Danny Farquhar, and Michael Saunders.... and Bautista and Lind are yours
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Wow what a misleading title. Thanks OP.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Yes and yes but.........................we are talking about injury prone 28 years old guy with 92 wRC+ so far. He's exactly the type of guy who thrives or would thrive here. 27, 28 years old, hasn't done s***....... Bautista, Edwin, Donaldson........Saunders
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Just what the Jays need ... More guys who don't play. Agreed. Why would we bring in Saunders, when we could keep Melky, a far superior player?
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Yeah I could get on board with this Money saved to sign Hanley Ramirez or Asdrubal Cabrera and some relief help. yuck!!
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Yes! YES!!!! THIS is what we need. We can replace Colby Rasmus with...another Colby Rasmus. That is what is going to lead the Jays to championships. I know some people are just making comments about this potentially being a "value" deal of sorts. But if an argument between this mediocre player and his boss and the remote possibility of him coming to Toronto versus 28 other MLB teams can illicit 4+ pages of commentary (gotta adjust for the Moogy OT argument crap) then AA has done his job of successfully lowering your expectations of this team. I don't want to have to hear or see or read about Michael Saunders and the Jays ever again and if this ends up being AA's top move for 2014-15 off-season then we are all going to the home opener and drinking the poison Kool-Aid like one of those crazy suicide cults...all 40K+ of us....to show AA what we think of his GM skills.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Yeah I could get on board with this Money saved to sign Hanley Ramirez or Asdrubal Cabrera and some relief help. LOL the only way Hanley comes here is if another team signs him to a big contract and then immediately trades him to the Jays for Sanchez, Norris and Barreto.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 The more i think about it the more i like an Adam Lind for Saunders swap. We trade a 1B/DH extreme platoon bat who's often injured for a CF/LF platoon bat who's often injured. Saunders platoon splits aren't as extreme as Linds, he provides more defensive value at a position of need when the free agent market is bare this year. He costs less so savings to re invest (hopefully). We could probably pick up Kendrys Morales (switch hitter) on a very reasonable one year contract to replace Lind. I think he has a great chance to rebound (late start, BABIP 244) Seattle needs/looking for a 1B/DH bat. Could be a fit.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Agreed. Why would we bring in Saunders, when we could keep Melky, a far superior player? Melky's far superior with the Bat. Saunders is far superior at everything else. Saunders will also be making likely 12-14 million less per year without a long term commitment and can play all the OF positions.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 I put a question mark. Exercising causes cancer? More at eleven.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 What if they brought in Saunders to replace Rasmus? That might be a better idea, I have no clue how Saunders is in CF but he seems good in the corners. Might be passable and wouldn't hurt the batting order.

I dont think these are the kind of moves that will propel Jays into the post season.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Sign Scherzer, Melky, Asdrubal Cabrera. Trade for Kemp. Add a couple of bullpen arms. What's another $60m in additional payroll, amirite?
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 What's another $60m in additional payroll, amirite? They can afford it.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Sign Scherzer, Melky, Asdrubal Cabrera. Trade for Kemp. Add a couple of bullpen arms. lol
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 I dont think these are the kind of moves that will propel Jays into the post season. Not happening unless they sign an Ace
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Sign Scherzer, Melky, Asdrubal Cabrera. Trade for Kemp. Add a couple of bullpen arms. Wow at paying Asdrubal Cabrera market value. Scherzer will sign a long term that a team will regret almost immediately when he signs.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 They can afford it. No they can't. Did you not read my thread about Rogers financial state? Or read their financials yourself? Or check out their stock price compared to the rest of the stock market over the past two years? Rogers stinks right now. No more money for baseball players. If Rogers had sucked financially in 2012 as much as they did in 2013 and 2014, AA/PB probably wouldn't have gotten permission to do those trades.

LOL at signing Schertzer, Melky, Astrubal, a couple of BP arms and trading for Kemp ! That would add about 90 million and put this team over the 200 mill mark .
