glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Agree with most of this but I really think we're keeping Melky With the way Rogers stifled payroll this season, I think the only way he comes back is if he accepts the qualifying offer. Otherwise I don't see them paying him free agent dollars. I don't have a problem keeping Melky. I have said many times in baseball you can build a top 5 team and farm system simultaneously. Keep your good players, draft well, and do both. It's Rogers that scares me though.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Author Posted September 5, 2014 Stroman has a 2.5 WAR in 100 innings. That's amazing value. We wouldn't be needing that from Happ's replacement, though. We have league average or better innings eaters and two young starters with potential to improve. The last spot being a known mediocrity for $6.7M or a potential mediocrity (with much greater upside) for the minimum isn't a huge downgrade. Replacing Melky and finding a 2B are far greater needs with no internal help on the way. I agree with your last sentence. But again go back to how AA thinks. Happ is a one year $6.7M commitment for decent value. If they are maneuvering to get a good MIF, a multiple year salary commitment will be needed. If Happ had three years left it might make sense to let him go. But I'd keep Happ for the little bit of extra cash this one year than save some money by going with a wild card in Jenkins when the Jays are supposed to compete. Then in 2016 Happ's salary comes off the books, with Morrow coming off this off-season. The more likely scenario under AA's tenure is that if Happ gets dumped, the salary savings won't be used effectively or at all and the Jays will be out a decent #5 starter. With Beeston going on rants about how the money is there.

So if you think out of those 3 guys you can get a number 5 starter having Happ for 6.7 is a waste of money when you can better use it towards a 2nd baseman or Melky or whatever upgrade this team needs.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Imagine if Happ gets his ERA below 4! Buck will be fapping hard every telecast next year!
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 92nd best and there's 30 teams with a 5 man rotation for 150 slots. 92nd best sounds like a solid back end starter to me who can hit the minimum innings required to be ranked by rate stats. Happ really hasn't had a "disastrous" year in a Jays uniform. This is his first full year relatively injury free with the Jays and it's not like his injuries have been chronic arm problems...freak accident and sore back. His stats are ok, his stuff has potential for him to have more upside and his durability (which is a BIG one with this team) has been excellent this year. There is really no reason to believe that Happ has somehow "figured it out". His peripherals are basically identical to his career averages save for a dip in the amount of walks given up. He is what he is.
SpeedyGose Verified Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I don't think many are against extending Melky, or so I thought. I think there is a good collection of guys here who would like to replace Melky with someone half his price that has undervalued tools which would provide similar value(defense). Melky is probably going to demand 3/48
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Is not a qualifying offer at 12 mil so even at 16 mil is that really to much? I am not sure it is really out of line. Beside I see milky more as a DH next year then a left fielder. With him as DH we don't need a platoon saving a Roster spot as well. 8+7 Lind salary gone = 15 mil easy!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Mets have Murphy but he's not under the radar and a one year guy. Cubs have Valbuena but the Jays already dumped him. Scutaro will be available for free. Weeks had a rebound year and will be free agent (and screams AA guy). The Jays need to find the next Dozier in someone's farm system. Wish they could have traded for Herrera before the Mets did.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Thought Scutaro is signed for six million dollars for next year? wonder if they would consider a swap for izturis to save 3 million?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Thought Scutaro is signed for six million dollars for next year? wonder if they would consider a swap for izturis to save 3 million? yeah but I figure Panik has solidified 2B for them so Scutaro and his back issues are likely not worth the $6M. I'm not sure he's worth it for anyone but I'm guessing they would move him for virtually nothing.

For one of Blackburn or crick as well? lol
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Heck since I am nice inspite of what GD thinks! Lol I will throw in a Reyes for both Blackburn and Crick if they like! lol
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Wonder if Happ gets that option picked up for next year? You could do a lot worse with your #5. You could probably put that 7M to use more efficiently though. He's the only tough call. It's 6.7 M with a FREE buyout according to BR - is that right? Any chance they could pick up the options, in case someone gets hurt, young arm struggles, or at the least, try flipping him in the off season for anything of value ie b prospects, BP arm(s)? A team might be desperate for a solid option at the bottom of their rotation and might be able to pick up a piece for use and/or depth.

I mused about that in an earlier post and he then went out and bombed the next start. If he finishes the next 3 or 4 starts he gets then I can see it as a possibility but really it is mostly depending on budget. AA has said the budget is set at the end of the year and is dependent on TV revenue and attendance. Attendance is down big time so I'm one who sees the budget going down . If it goes down too much then say good bye to Happ/Happless Edit Attendance is down over 132,000 so far , Aprox 2000 a game
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I have a feeling Romero might have a comeback year considering its a contract year
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Attendance isn't way down, and viewership is way up, nothing is set yet, concerning payroll. Down 132,500 so far this year. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/current_attendance.shtml

I'd think they'd only do that if they talked to Happ and his agent first (not that they have to). I know teams have done this before rather than pay the buyout but it's considered a poor people/players association move.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I have a feeling Romero might have a comeback year considering its a contract year I think the most amazing thing is that's he's actually having more career upside than his girlfriend who has dropped to second rate MLS sideline reporter. Good thing she turned to RR to prepare her for comeback.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 With 13 games left in "CONTENTION*, lol. I had a hard time getting a seat last weekend. Yet, like I said viewership is up bigtime, apparently. I'd like to think we'll be in the 150 mark next season, hopefully more, who knows. Its because the Yankees were in town and it was Derek Jeter's last appearances at the RC and it was on the Labour Day weekend. If it was the Rays or another team I'm sure it would have been easy to get tickets. I refuse to spend over face value for tickets during the regular season, other than the home opener if it's an intriguing pitching matchup, when the games are meaningless.

If the jays can win 2 of 3 I can see there being around 25 000/night for the Cubs series which I think would be pretty good for a weeknight in September. Maybe more since the Cubs are a storied franchise and don't come here very often, also have a lot of young talent who could be attractive to fans.

I'm sure a good 25-40% will be Cubs fans who made the trip up from Chicago or Cubs fans that live in the city. I'm sure the regular casual won't be going out of his/her way to see a bad Cubs teams during the week. I want to go both on the Tuesday and Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing guys like Rizzo, Baez and Soler. I've got some Cubs gear which I'll wear down!
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 No Melky and no Janssen = money to sign a Lester, Shields, Scherzer, or another top FA pitcher There are internal options to replace both I'd rather have an ace starter than Melky and CJ I don't buy that FA won't come to TO.... Clemens, Molitor, Winfield

Exactly I think there will still be a decent number of fans especially since the Cubs rarely come to Toronto. Add in the fact they have some of the best position player prospects and you will get an extra 5-7000 than a regular AL opponent.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 lol the Jays won't pay for a top end starter. Disagree.... they've attempted to in the past. Anibal for example (not quite top end). 2015 is the last year of the so called 3 year window.... let's see what happens. We all know the Jays lack the ace that a true contender needs.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 We all know the Jays lack the ace that a true contender needs. Really? Who was the ace of this team: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/TOR/1993.shtml

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Epic bump Happ should have his start skipped. Pushing back Stroman and having Buehrle follow Dickey seems like a waste of the Dickey effect.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 Guzman, 20 QS in 33 games I would say 2014 Buehrle has been better than 1993 Guzman. So either Buehrle is a legit ace for this team, or the 1993 team didn't have a legit ace.
