Sorrow Verified Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 What about Brandon Morrow? He just needs to be activated off the DL, doesn't need to create 40 man roster space for him like Norris or Pompey would. Thankfully we have a lot of crap we can DFA and not worry about, I'm looking at you Mastrionni, Colt Hynes, etc.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Was Gustavo Pierre on the 40-man or will a spot need to be opened for Mayberry? Also, wasn't Morrow on the 60-day DL thus off the 40-man roster? If so, that's another spot needed. I, of course, have been wrong many a time so disregard if this is an addition to my long list of errors...
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Can a player compete in the AFL when your on the 40? Otherwise having him here to pinch run and play defense would be kind of nice. He can play a Billy Hamilton role. Yes, any player on the mlb roster can play in the afl as long as they have less than 1 year of service time as of Sept 1

No, Pierre wasn't on the 40 man and the was room to add Mayberry without creating space. Right now they're at 39 on the 40 man so even activating Morrow would be fine without having to DFA anyone. Izturis being on the 60-day creates that extra space
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 The question now becomes, what do you do in March if both Norris and Sanchez earn their spots on to the roster. Both in the pen? More likely they send one down (Norris) and await an injury (assuming an injury/injuries hasn't already happened both are in the rotation). FO and Rogers will take the "they are being cheap waiting for the Super two deadline" beating. They could have easily said a month ago that Norris has X innings left this year and then we are shutting him down and waited to add him to the 40 and made much better excuses next season. Building expectations and disappointing fans is something this team/FO has got quite good at though.

I don't see how both Sanchez and Norris can be on the rotation with innings limits that would be in the 160-170 range if the Jays FO are still expecting to be contending. They could probably get away with 1 of them and skipping the odd start to try and keep the innings down, but wasting them in a pen role when they need to be building innings would be hilariously stupid.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Yet neither off day I guess we had been due for several since we had played more games than just about everybody Sigh. If we were legitimately in to playoff race is might have been beneficial, but...
flafson Verified Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 On September 3rd 2011 the Rays were 9 games out of the wild card and made the playoffs. On September 1st the Jays are 5 games out. Hope lives on! We are not the Rays though, we would need to be up 10 games on everyone else to make the wild card...

I realize that a Sanchez pitching average as a starter is probably equal to him pitching great out of the pen...but I don't mind keeping him as a late innings guy or closer. His lack of command and swing and miss rates will likely end up exposing him if they convert him to starter. He's looking comfortable where he is now and might have 1.5 fWAR type numbers over 60 innings. That upgrade is probably more on any reliever than it would be on Sanchez over the 5th starter or even the best in the minors.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 isn't 160-170 innings roughly the average for a MLB starter in a year?
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 isn't 160-170 innings roughly the average for a MLB starter in a year? Perhaps but if a starter is averaging 160IP over a full healthy season they are probably doing less than 5 IP / game on average. #notawesome
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Author Posted September 1, 2014 Neil Wagner DFAd to get another 40-man spot (Graveman?)
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 The management of the 40 man roster is atrocious and will come back to bite AA firmly in his HUGE Ass.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 The management of the 40 man roster is atrocious and will come back to bite AA firmly in his HUGE Ass. Actually this is looking pretty positive. There's a lot of dead weight coming off the roster this offseason. Mastro, Hynes, Janssen, morrow, Hague, Rasmus, likely McGowan, possibly Johnson, Tolleson, Francisco and maybe even Cabrera could be gone. Pompey was a must add, so there plenty of room for Graveman and Norris and lots of space for AA to go his usual reliever binge.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 @ShiDavidi: Per industry sources, #BlueJays full Sept call-up list: Norris, Nolin, Graveman, Morrow, Pompey, Gose, Goins, Johnson, Kottaras Actually lots of useful players in there. Also, Ryan Goins.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 WTF? That's a s*** ton of callups. No kidding. And 4 roster spots have to opened. Not that the guys being turfed are worth keeping but still. 9 guys is a ton, especially with 5 position players.

Not that the guys being turfed are worth keeping but still. 9 guys is a ton, especially with 5 position players. Yeah this is unprecedented. Usually we just see the same handful of guys that we saw during the season despicte a lot of speculation to the contrary. We don't usually see this many new guys and at most we might see one legit prospect. This is oddly aggressive and I don't understand the rationale.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Author Posted September 2, 2014 WTF? That's a s*** ton of callups. No Drabek, Delabar or Rasmussen.. and the likely DFAs will be Hynes, Hague, Mastro and possibly Delabar or Drabek.

I'm pretty sure Graveman didn't need to be added so that's 2 guys (Norris being the other one). This is my concern. Pompey kept on hitting plus needed to be protected. We'll see how they handle guys like Burns and Cole who need to be added in the offseason or be exposed.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Getting rid of Delabar would be dumb.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Getting rid of Delabar would be dumb. Agreed. He's still got talent and he'll be cheap.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Agreed. He's still got talent and he'll be cheap. Yup. Plus, we know relievers can bounce back and forth between being good and bad from year to year. This is why I have an issue with adding Norris and Graveman when they didn't need to yet. I hope they do protect a guy like Burns, who, while not a flashy prospect, could be useful next year as he can play 3B, SS, 2B and I imagine even some OF. Not saying he's a great prospect, but you need depth guys as well as studs.

Tough question to answer.. but he has little to prove in the minors, and considering he's already in AAA with dominating numbers, why not give him a chance? Waiting to add him would be OK if he were in A+/AA, but his strong numbers would've likely had him get called up sometime in 2015 anyway.
