Tax calcs for athletes playing in multiple cities are much different than your own "realaccountant."

And, regardless ...

Canada's highest tax rate is 29%, kicking in at about $136K.

The U.S.'s highest tax rate is 39.6%, kicking in just over $450K (tax rate at $136K is 25%, but then goes to 28,33 and then 35 before hitting 39.6%)

Ontario's highest rate is 13.16.

U.S. state rates can vary greatly, from none ... to places like NY, where the highest rate is 8.88% ... and cities can even tax you (NYC has a highest marginal of 3.876%)

And then there's property taxes, et al ...

So, depending on where you live and work, the U.S. can result in much higher taxes than Canada.

I wasn't referring to higher TAX rates but rather the double taxation that occurs

Don't forget the sales tax that comes in Canada either

I played slow pitch in North York, and taking the 401 TOWARDS Toronto at like 7pm is packed.

A lot of times your only other option is the 407. My current boss lives in Newmarket and has worked jobs from Burlington, Kitchener to Peterborough in a few weeks and if he wants to ever see his wife, he has no choice but to rack up the 407 bills. Apparently he's spent over a thousand bucks in a month just to ride that horrid money pit.

The GTA sucks.

Why doesn't he just live near his work

I don't get people. I always move 10 mins away from my job.

Brb less gas and mileage

Brb more time take off later in the morn

Brb no traffic

If you don't live where you work your doing it wrong

The 401 is a s*** storm. That highway is always busy no matter what time of day. Pain in the ass.

They should just make all highways toll. Driving is a privilege and not a right. Too many people commuting to work. People need to move to accommodate their commute

I don't understand the hate Toronto gets sometimes. It's a gorgeous city, has a ton of awesome places to live/party, it's extremely clean/safe. Most of these American cities are pure trash.

I was just in Chicago and I would 100% prefer to live in Toronto over Chicago (even though it's still a beautiful city). If I was a ballplayer I think I'd only prefer NY, Miami, San Fran, and maybe Seattle over Toronto if I was concerned about my quality of living.

People forget that most athletes are dumb. These guys are not too bright to began with. Specifically to baseball players most of them don't go to college. Usually high school stars get high marks and rarely study

All this results in men that are incapable of making decisions. Thus their wives make the decisions. Women for the most part want to live close to their families and thus get the majority say in where their ball players husbands go

Not compared to places like Detroit, Cincy, Cleveland, Baltimore, Atlanta, St. Louis, Minnesota, Milwaukee. Heck I'd even say LA is pretty much a dump, unless you go outside the city.

Uhhh you do know that the U.S. has the most millionaires and billionaires in the world right? lol. Those millionaires and billionaires wouldn't move from the U.S. to go to Canada if you doubled their networth tomorrow. haha. Toronto is a decent city, I actually lived there a few years because my ex is from there. So I know first hand how it is there. It's cold as hell there most of the year, and people there don't have much personality so it makes the city pretty boring. The U.S. is so deep with great cities that's it's not even fair to compare man. And then you can live in any climate you want. Great beaches all over Florida, up to Virginia Beach across over to California. And when I saw you put Atlanta on your little list, I know you are way off. Atlanta is a beautiful city, with great weather hosted the Summer Olympics, the Super Bowl. I could go on and on about Atlanta as it's one of my favorite cities.

Honestly though man, if guys had the option to play in a U.S. city or a Canadian city they are going to choose the U.S. city 9 times out of 10. The U.S. is just where everything is. Lots of options and great cities to live in. If your a rich athlete why would you want to live in a cold city like Toronto? If they are going to live in a cold city up north in the U.S. New York is a cool place to be if you have to be in a cold place. That's just how it is man, nobody wants to live in Canada. Not when you have the option of living in the U.S. I lived up there a few years, I don't wanna go back up there to live. Visit yeah, but to live? No

Having spent a decent amount of time in both Seattle and San Francisco, both are amazing. The traffic in SF is worse, but also way more fun with the hills. And if you like people-watching, San Fran wins hands down, there's freaks everywhere, but any weirdos I talked too seemed like really nice people. it's also expensive as f*** though. Seattle is definitely cheaper, still really nice and I find the traffic really easy. Lots of bridges and tolls though but the scenery is great.

The 407 is great to drive on. You can sometimes drive 130-140 km/hr. Using it on a regular basis though would be expensive, even with the transponder. It's definitely a huge expense I would imagine.

For sure, it's great because not that many people want to pay that much to take it.

I just feel like all roadways/highways should be part of public infrastructure and not controlled by the whim of some foreign based company to squeeze out as much profit as possible. The Burlington skyway I believe was funded by tolls when it first opened, but all of it went to covering the cost of its construction. When the debt was paid, it became free.

Thanks for signing up to a baseball forum about the Toronto Blue Jays to contribute this.

Our igloos are actually pretty toasty to be honest, man.

It's a lot nicer here from May-Sept than it is in Houston

I'd like to see the city make the Gardiner a toll road. Don't charge as much as the 407 obviously, though $1 per ride/day on it could generate a lot of revenue for the city and keep the highway in better shape and likely would pressure more people to rely on public transit.

Without a transponder, I believe it's like $7-8 per ride from lets say the 427 to Yonge Street/Bayview. Round trips costed around $16 which is crazy expensive. I don't have to rely on it since I live in the southern part of the city, though for people that live further north, it's a huge expense especially when you factor in gas prices as well.

They keep the highway in great shape however. It's one of the smoothest rides and its so open!

Well places like Florida have the climate for beaches all year round lol. I'm sure Toronto with a summer climate 12 months of the year would be a lot better. Plus, Florida isn't as great as it seems to be. You have hurricane season every late summer/fall and its not like all parts of Florida are thriving. Places in Tampa, Orlando, heck even Miami are shitholes and dives. There are parts in the U.S. I wouldn't dare live in.

As for Atlanta, I flew into the city a lot since flying Delta, that's a major hub for them. There is not much to do in Atlanta, trust me. I have a feeling its like Cincy but on a larger scale.

It's not an issue on the federal level. Rarely, if ever, on the state level. I have actual credentials. No argument here ... just teaching you. Now stop talking.

Why is Toronto a s***-hole? Well I'm glad you asked, let me answer that for you:

- It stinks.

- It's dirty and polluted.

- People are not friendly (keep-to-yourself culture).

- People live to work.

- People are selfish douchebags.

- Mayor is an incompetent crack-head.

- Lake is a toxic swamp.

- One of the worst cities for traffic in the world.

- Transit system is an absolute joke.

- Sports franchises are all hopeless.

- Women would rather eat poutine than entertain their sexuality.

- The city is dead after 2:00 AM.

The only good thing about Toronto is not being in it.

I've not read the rest of the thread but I needed to reply to this specifically "people are not friendly". As someone who has visited Toronto as a tourist it is an incredibly friendly place. More so than any other city I've visited (which is many). I loved the people of Toronto and am very much looking forward to coming back as a result.

Posted
You either clearly don't live in the city or never go outside your house. Nothing aside from the sports franchises is remotely true. And yeah, big deal we get a lot of traffic lol.

I don't know.

-Women would rather eat poutine than entertain their sexuality: I've found this to be true. The women aren't very feminine in general but maybe that's just a North American thing.

-People are not friendly: definitely true relative to other cities I've been to in Canada. Actually all my ex classmates agreed with me, even those who grew up there.

-Transit system is a joke: ever been to Europe? In Toronto if you take the subway, you can always be late for work and just say the subway got delayed. Everyone in my office liked that excuse.

-Lake is a toxic swamp: okay it's not Lake Erie but I believe it's the 2nd most polluted of the great lakes.

I don't think it's polluted relative to the U.S. But the nature of it being a larger city makes it have some very dirty areas. Not necessarily a knock on something that happens in every big city.

Apparently this is now the random word thread. Or the "if you don't know, I'm not telling thread." Or the "guess what I'm thinking" thread.

Toaster.
