G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 http://www.torontosun.com/2014/08/16/blue-jays-gm-alex-anthopoulos-set-to-return-next-year - Alex Anthopoulos, the much-maligned general manager of the Blue Jays, will return for his sixth season running the club, a bevy of major-league sources have confirmed. Apparently, there is no temperature at all to remove Anthopoulos from his job — in fact, quite the opposite sentiment exists — with an appreciation internally for the manner in which he has conducted his business. Neither Anthopoulos nor club president Paul Beeston would comment on the general manager’s status. Anthopoulos has taken tremendous heat from fans, and even from some of his players, for his inability to make a significant deal at the non-waiver trade deadline and, of late, the Jays’ playoff chances are fading. Ownership, however, looks at it somewhat differently. No matter what happens over the final 38 games, it appears pleased that Anthopoulous has put the club’s future in good pitching hands with a potential rotation down the road that includes Marcus Stroman, Aaron Sanchez, Drew Hutchison and minor-league stalwart Daniel Norris — all of whom are 23 years old or younger. THIS AND THAT The cost to acquire David Price, had the Jays finished negotiations in trade talks with Tampa, was Stroman and Hutchison. And that was without being able to open talks to extend Price’s contract beyond next season ... A little truth on the Rogers-Jays-money debate: The Jays never went to Rogers and asked for more money because they were never close enough to a trade that would have required additional funds. They still believe the money was there had they asked for it. You can believe whatever you want ...
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 much-maligned understatement looks like another season of injuries, replacement level players and pro scouts
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm okay with giving him one more year to show he can stop being a turd and go back to his old ways when he first took over as GM.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Considering that the Jays may have potentially a rotation of Dickey, Buehrle, Happ, Hutchison, Sanchez, Norris and Stroman, with Nolin, Graveman in AAA, they're in much better shape than in 2011-2013. We could actually afford to trade Buehrle or Dickey this offseason if we want to cash them in for young talent.. AA's done a good job rebuilding the pitching on the farm, even after that trade. And besides, AA has a better chance of keeping his job than Brian Cashman, who is likely to be fired after this season by the Yankees when they miss the playoffs again, and his contract expires.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 So what happens if they tank the rest of the year?

GNick49 Verified Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Worst scenario of them all. Jays played well enough to keep them around but not well enough to win.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm okay with giving him one more year to show he can stop being a turd and go back to his old ways when he first took over as GM. I was optimistic on this team and on AA for a long time. Now I am totally pissed off at off season and deadline...to make the moves we did with MIA and RA taking the payroll up to big levels and trading top prospects, but then not make the moves needed makes no sense? Injuries are part of the game = Machado, Weiters and Davis falling off a cliff from 2013. Stro, Sanchez, Hutch and Norris etc - we will see. Reason to be excited but we have seen way too little of them to know what they really will be. Our comp will add this off season and big arms will return - imo this was our year and we f***ed it up. I can live with another AA year...but I will need the rage/vent thread daily Im sure.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Yes I signed up but been really busy last few days so haven't had a chance to play. Let me know when you have time. I'm playing today if your interested in a match.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Worst scenario of them all. Jays played well enough to keep them around but not well enough to win. Check the win prediction thread. I predicted 83 wins which might not be the final record, but I said it would be enough for AA to stay around.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 The article does have a point though. If you f*** up part of your job in the past (the Miami and NYM trades) but manage to stick around long enough and do something to make up for it more recently (develop and not trade the other guys and actually have 4 decent rotation prospects for 2015-16) then don't you deserve another shot to continue on the new path? Let's just say this...AA is VERY lucky with the progression of Stroman and Norris this year...and let's just hope them and the other guys don't turn out how JPR's pitchers turned out.
theblujay Verified Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 I'm ok with this as I don't think next year is make or break for the direction of the org. The year after will be telling and whether or not I would want to keep AA around would largely depend on what he does or doesn't do over the next year in choosing a direction for the club
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 How do I play you? I'll send you an invite. Just PM your username and how much you want to play for.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 I'm fine with this. Some people forget that unless Beeston goes, it's likely he would hire a worse GM. yeah. The Rogers suits and Beeston view AA as a youthful whiz kid modern GM. So if AA doesn't work the next guy hired by Beeston will be "old school".
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Also I think everyone forgot to mention that Gibbons will also be back if that was in anyone's doubt.
Nox Verified Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 Not too surprised. It was always pretty clear that the higher ups at Rogers don't really know what makes a good baseball ops department. It's ok though, his replacement needs another year or two of grooming anyways from a PR standpoint.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 He deserved. We have a great roster, conformed for tons of RL players.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 If J.P. Ricciardi has the same tenure as AA he gets canned. But Anthopoulos has the knack for saying "all the right things" to the media, good enough for Rogers.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 This very likely means that the rebuild doesn't start this offseason. So another wasted season in 2015, and hopefully a new management team before 2016. Figure on 3-4 years for the new group to clean up the mess and construct a new competitive core, and we're looking at contention in 2019-2020. If competent people are hired. f***, I want so much to genuinely cheer for this team again.
immature Verified Member Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 The media will continue to harp on the young arms but they of course are being overly optimistic. None of the guys project to be a 1 or 2, and Sanchez will likely be a long man in the bullpen. Couple that with the fact that we have no positional prospects outside of Pompey for the next 2 years while our offense will continue the inevitable decline due to age, its safe to say with AA holding the keys we are destined for another decade of failure. We can only pray that someone with a brain somehow infiltrates this organization of stupidity and begins to change things around.

No one knows for sure, obviously, but the key words here are project to be and Sanchez definitely projects to be a 1 or 2 starter. Even with fans always overvaluing their prospects, saying Sanchez will likely be a long man in the bullpen....is ludicrous.
