43211234 Verified Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Nay ahead of Barreto still? That's really surprising.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Miguel Castro is a huge omission when it comes to the Jays top 20 prospects. In fact, it makes it laughable.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Miguel Castro is a huge omission when it comes to the Jays top 20 prospects. In fact, it makes it laughable. I noticed that as well. Maybe they think he is older than he is listed? Apparently Pentecost was number 101 on the list, so pretty much top 100. Really suprised Pompey was ranked so low.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 They don't really have anything on Castro I don't think. This was a very cautious list. Bryant 4, Severino 70, Pompey and Hoffman in the 90's really stuck out at me.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Guys, they can't rank Castro if they don't have scouting reports on him. We couldn't even find a picture of him.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Mlb.com seems to not let current performance cloud their rankings too much.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Author Posted July 28, 2014 Pimp-Foley Scouting Grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50 Reid-Foley starred at the first major event of last summer's high school showcase circuit, striking out all six batters he faced at the Perfect Game National in June. He continued that level of performance through his senior season and the Blue Jays made him their second round pick. Reid-Foley combines polish and stuff. He throws somewhat across his body, which allows him to run his fastball inside against left-handers. He usually works at 91-93 mph and tops out at 95. Reid-Foley does a good job of throwing four pitches for strikes. His low-80s slider is his best secondary offering, and he also will mix in a curveball and a sinking changeup. His athleticism helps him to repeat his delivery with consistency.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 He's pitching in Vancouver now, he's not unknown anymore. Yeah but they probably haven't gotten quite as much of a look at the rest of the prospects.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 What makes you like him so much though? Have you scouted him? I haven't said anything about him! lol He's got a great statline and apparently a good fastball if I remember correctly. That's the most I know and the most I profess to know lol.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 I haven't said anything about him! lol Indeed you didn't lol. Was just making the point that we're all dealing with incomplete information on Castro and other uber-young guys. It's not an oversight for them to not include Castro.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Author Posted July 28, 2014 Miguel Castro is legit and he's top-10 talent in jays farm system. After just 2 months, Rafael Devers top-8 in Red Sox farm system #Info
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Fastball mid to upper 90s, and John Schneider says his slider is one of the best pitches in the entire organization. Changeup is a work in progress. Here's the BA Blurb on him from the 2014 Handbook: "The 6'5" Castro is a physical specimen with one of the most projectable bodies in the minors, and has the potential to be a front-half of the rotation starter. He has a lean, wiry build, a tapered waist and long limbs. He threw 91-92mph before signing, and last year sat 93-96 and touched 99. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot and gets above average sink. His long stride and long arms give him good extension, and the ball explodes out of his hand. His velocity, sink angle and release distance should make him tough on right handed hitters. His arm slot allows him to turn over a change up with above-average potential, and he has a developing slider with sweepy action and pronounced lateral tilt. Increased weight and strength have helped his body control and strike-throwing ability and will continue to be a priority for his development for the lithe Castro."
metafour Verified Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Its a lazy attempt. For instance, they have Barretto, Lugo and DJ Davis all with "50 Hit" grades. You can not seriously argue that Davis' hit tool is as good as Lugo's, let alone Barreto who is a potentially elite contact hitter. s***; Lugo and Davis are on the same team with Lugo being younger...their performance: Lugo: .283 average, 13.6% strikeout rate Davis: .213 average, 30.4% strikeout rate Same Hit grade? Even taking into account for Davis' tools', its not close.

metafour Verified Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 It's about "future" DJ is a great athlete. He will be a stud or bust. If it was about "Future" then Barreto would be 60+ in Hit. There is not a chance in hell that DJ Davis is anywhere near those two in "Hit" tool, whether you want to talk "Now" or "Future"...and this is coming from a guy who still holds some level of hope for Davis. Giving those three the same grade in that category is simply s*****, lazy, evaluation.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 These prospect lists really have to stop over rating every single new draftee. It happens every year and there's zero justification behind it
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 These prospect lists really have to stop over rating every single new draftee. It happens every year and there's zero justification behind it I have the last 4 BA Handbooks (2011-2014). When I go through and read reports on guys as each new book comes out you see a gradual refinement and a more accurate report compared to the initial expectations these kids get tagged with.

metafour Verified Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 A.J. Jimenez hit tool: 45 Franklin Barreto hit tool: 50 Franklin Barreto: 50 Michael Chavis: 55 Chavis, drafted 26th overall, is older than Barreto by almost 7 months and is hitting .093 to date, two levels below Barreto in the GCL. I'm not one to use stats (especially in the low minors) to extrapolate tools/ability, but come on man. The grades they give out are all over the place.
metafour Verified Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 What kind of sample size is that? lol A tiny one, but it paints a perfect example of them hilariously overstating a newly drafted player over a superior prospect who has not only age, but performance on his side. Barreto would challenge for .400 if you threw him back into the GCL.
