Solarte is especially valuable on a team like San Diego that has essentially no infield spots fully spoken for.

Throw Cabrera, Amarista, Peterson, Gyorko, Solarte, Lindsey at the wall and pray that three of them stick.

Apparently the ask was for Nolin and Lugo. Seems a little bit steeper than what the Yankees gave up but i still might have pulled the trigger. You can't just sit on your hands watching every team around you get better.

+ De Paula, who's a fringe T100 prospect.

BA ranked him 15th...among the Yankees going into the season and he hasn't improved repeating high A at 23. He's a guy that fantasy players seem to love. Unless a secondary pitch has developed he is a one pitch pitcher (which is supposedly a really good pitch). Seems like he's got the reliever tag on him.

If they get nobody, we may as well stop caring. Like you said once again it's quite clear what holes the team has: 2B and starter... I am surprised, these are the same holes they had in the offseason.

If they do nothing and then finish 3rd or 4th in this s***** 2014 AL East it's not going to be pretty.

Bautista will lose his s*** and demand to be traded

If Headley's grip change is for real, and his injuries don't adversely affect him, this is a steal.

They gave up a fringe bench guy who has floated around the minors, and a fastball-only guy who is an advanced age future reliever in A ball.

And if Headley doesn't work out, they didn't give up anything meaningful going forward, they'll just struggle there this year.

Plus they get ARod back next year. Lulz

several of them would probably miss the wall.

This is quite the 180 for someone who was so passionately against any team viewing Headley as an upgrade

Like I've stated an infinite number of times, he is playing with a herniated disc, which may require surgery ... He's trying to fight through it, but it's of course entirely possible that it could shut him down at any time.

He's had 3 different calf strains that have caused him to miss time over the last two years, and he's missed time due to knee issues, twice, as well (including a surgery), in addition to back issues on two separate occasions, including the current unresolved one.

Acquiring Headley, in order to help this year, is one of the dumbest ideas of this season.

It's obvious the dude has serious health problems effecting his back and legs (often inter-related), and they aren't likely to subside (quite the opposite). And they will drain his defensive value, as well. And playing on turf? Oy.

Acquiring Headley is twice as stupid as QO'ing JJ, which was a monumentally dumb suggestion.

That's not even touching on his apparent freak finger injuries (two broken fingers in the last 3 years). Dude is a walking infirmary. No one should give a s*** that he was thuper-awethome 2 years ago. That's no longer a relevant landscape.

We've been extremely fortunate to find not one, but two MVP-quality players by sheer luck and at ridiculous cheap contracts. It's an extreme shame that AA has failed to capitalize on that, just like how Ricciardi failed to capitalize on the best pitcher in baseball in the previous decade.

Grip change, changes everything don't you know.

Nice catch on the quotes.

According to who, you? He's a relief prospect.

You can't criticize the Padres here IMO because they've been shopping Headley for a while and needed to trade him; this is the best they could get.

"We liked Headly, but at the end of the day, with the guys they were asking about and with Lawrie progressing well and Kawasaki playing well, it just wasn't a good fit. Money wasn't an issue, it's just when we asked our scouts about Headly: his numbers, his health, his attitude; compared to some of the other balls we have in the air, it just want a good fit. Have I mentioned it wasn't a good fit? Because it wasn't. A good fit that is."

I saw him on the back list of some top 100 prospect lists..? lol

And I'm not criticizing the Padres, I'm saying they did well lol.

That second part was just a general statement lol. The Padres did as well as u can expect and the Yankees did what they needed to do.

You know what? Shame on us for essentially letting New York and Tampa back in to the playoff picture. f*** this team...

I wonder what Jim thinks a fair return for 2 months of a possibly broken 3B is?

I can't believe you've gone and done this.

Exactly

This was a very good return for a semi-injured 62 game rental

I don't think Jim is saying the trade is unfair - he's just saying the Padres didn't get much

About expected for a player that will be a free agent at season's end and has been declining (injury?) for the last few years, and wasn't part of the Padres plans.

You've seen Solarte. hopefully his stuff plays better in the NL. Rafael DePaula is a A+ ball pitcher with control issues but high K totals, and will likely end up in the bullpen long term.

Something must be wrong with Headley if this is all the Padres could get for him.

And for the Yankees, he's basically a stopgap for the remainder of the season until A-Rod's contract returns to the payroll and the 25-man in 2015.

I guess you missed this (my comments, from 7/11, in bold, from the Around Baseball thread, page 507):

No one has posted about Headley's grip change? Despite his injury, at least in the short term it has apparently made a huge difference.

Seems to be working though ... he's been raking since the change. Apparently, it's the grip he used in 2012, when he was a legitimate offensive force. Broke his hand last year and had to abandon it. All sorts of boo boos since. And he finally decided he'd give it another go and he's productive again.

I was as against his acquisition as anyone, because of the injury issues ... but if he keeps this up and they can verify there's been a clear change in grip/approach and it's not likely to flare up more boo boos, you have to consider bringing him on board.

He's also striking out more, still not hitting for much power and hasn't drawn a walk in 24 days. His grip might be working on his confidence but he's really just riding two nice 4 hit games (one in Colorado) to some okay July numbers. Take away those two games and you have .241 OBP for the month of July. When he's struggled as bad as he has over the year, I don't blame him for making the change and who knows it might work but a grip change seems like an odd reason to do a 180 on a player...especially when 80% of your argument was about his injuries.

No I hadn't seen you make the 180 in that post. Considering how violently against it you were originally and the banter you had with people who wanted to bring him to Toronto, it's quite surprising.

I apologize for not realizing you could change your opinion on a dime even after bashing people who shared the same opinion that you now apparently have.

You tried to get a burn in, but you didn't conduct your due diligence. It happens. Free yourself from the burden of guilt and embarrassment and ...

I bet the cold never bothered you anyway ....

Let me post in the sort of language that you tend to speak.....

My god I'm surprised some posters on this board can walk from the bedroom to the bathroom during the middle of the night without seriously injuring themselves based on the stupidity that people spew on here. I mean, you really think that just because you changed your mind about an issue on July 11th instead of July 22nd changes anything about the argument here - YOU CHANGED YOUR DAMN MIND. The timing of when you changed it doesn't mean a damn thing.

Kind of like if I took a s*** today at 11am vs. 2pm, if my doctor asked if I had had a bowel movement today, I would answer "yes".

I swear I'm visiting a message board for mentally handicapped people not Jays fans half the time I'm here. If I had to guess the % of posters who need to get custom fitted VELCRO shoes I would have to say it's above 99%. Do you even know what a shoe is?

I mean seriously, people act as though trading for Headley would be the equivalent of allowing live abortions on national TV and then all of a sudden they change their minds because he apparently has tried a NEW GRIP!?!?! I feel like I need to call my local politician immediately to address the obvious flaws in our educational system. You list 101 reasons why to avoid this guy like the plague and then all of a sudden you hear that he has moved his left pinky 1/4 of a cm to the right and magically none of them apply?!?!

I'm not even a religious man but I feel a though I need to ask a priest to dedicate part of his sermon to a prayer for you.

That was actually fun :)
