DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Adding a young starter to the pen isn't necessarily a bad idea. Giving a young starter an unwarranted promotion to the majors after giving him an unwarranted promotion to AAA is a very bad idea. Pen or not, Sanchez is going to get rocked here. But this org has been a complete gong show for awhile now, so this is hardly surprising. Why wouldn't they want Norris in the pen this year? Gets him MLB experience and he will dominate. Sanchez would be interesting. He can probably hit triple digits consistently out of the BP. If he's around the zone he'd be hard to hit, especially so if he can continue to drop the hammer curve at will.

Bring him up. I just don't see how Sanchez is going to stay afloat against major league hitters.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I wouldn't mind some bullpen help as we currently are the 2nd worst team in the league in reliever xFIP.

If he's throwing 100+ mph with his insane movement he'd be fine at the the MLB level. Just makes more sense IMO to keep him in AAA the rest of the year and let him get as many reps as possible. Then AFL again...
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Sanchez could be ok out of the pen. Wouldn't mind that. Just don't think he ends up as a solid starter. But 100+ with heat and a good curveball out of the pen should be fine.

But 100+ with heat and a good curveball out of the pen should be fine. Sanchez is 22yo and throws a heavy breaking FB in the mid-to-upper 90's with ease. He can throw a dominant curve ball for strikes and swings and misses. He has a long way to go to be a top of the rotation arm but there is no reason to think that he wont be a serviceable mid-rotation starter with workhorse potential (dat frame). Reminds me a lot of healthy McG or a guy like Gio before his breakout.

I don't know how you can say this when he hasn't been close to fine in AA or AAA. He's not just going to start mowing people down as a reliever. He has no command. Sanchez has never dominated a level.

GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Bring up Drabek and Norris. Let Sanchez start. Good call. I wish the Jays would end the Drabek starting idea. Then start trying to build him up in the 'pen for a bit with the intention of moving him for something of value.

Then start trying to build him up in the 'pen for a bit with the intention of moving him for something of value. At this point that might be the best idea. He's having a hard time cutting it in AAA in the rotation. Might as well stick him in the pen, see if he can use his two best pitches, see if that helps him a bit. If he works out as a solid reliever than the Jays benefit. If they can move him for something else, especially with his value being a bit higher out of the pen, if that works, then better. Anything than having a borderline guy out of options next year and not wanting to just let him go but being out of ideas. Stick him in the pen, give him his last shot there, see what can happen. Might work like it did for Cecil.

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 So far it seems he's out of the rotation down in AAA. He hasn't started since 13 June. He's made 6 relief appearances since going 2-0 2.08 ERA 13 IP 9 H 5 R 3 ER 1HR 9/7 K/BB 1.58 GO/FO and 1.91 BAA Not too shabby but it would be great if he can work on his control especially out of the pen.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 You don't have to dominate at any level as a starter to be fine MLB reliever. Of course not. I'm just not sure why you would expect that a guy who's never had an easy time getting MiLB hitters out is going to succeed in the majors this year.

Guy has horrid control. The stuff is unquestionable, but until he can cutdown on the walks I don't think he will have any meaningful impact.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 It's going to happen, they've been saying it since his promo, and even Sanchez has said it's the plan all along. Doesn't mean it's a good plan.

Great stuff just can't locate it or walk guys left and right. Hopefully he can figure it out this year and be an asset if not I Don't see him sticking around much longer.

If we trade a top prospect he is the guy I would move. Hope I'm wrong though.

He's the most "expendable" right now since he's not named Norris, Sanchez, or Nolan and seems to have fallen off AA's depth chart a bit.

Guess you thought I was taking about Drabek?

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I do see them trying to use Sanchez as bait. They promoted him to AAA without really earning it, they're talking about him being able to contribute this year at the ML level, either in the pen (to begin with) or as a starter at some point. AA has gone to see him pitch and keeps name dropping him. Young guy with potential so teams will be interested. If they do move him it better be for a solid return and not just some rental they hope to bring back next year.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Hopefully, Delabar gets his s*** together. He's walked 1 in his last 3 appearances. Stilson is injured so he's not a candidate yet.
