gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 McCarthy would be our #2 starter after Stroman. He strikes guys out, doesn't walk anyone and gets a ton of groundballs. That combination is simply not going to continue to be ineffective. Brandon McCarthy is really really good and this trade could change the balance of power in the AL East. So McCarthy > Hutch and Beuarle?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 So McCarthy > Hutch and Beuarle? McCarthy is better than Dickey
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 McCarthy is better than Dickey I know bro, but he's worse than everyone else.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 McCarthy has a high ERA through 100 innings on a 20% HR/FB and now he's a bad pitcher? What a forum.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 I know bro, but he's worse than everyone else. Upgrade over Dickey and Happ. McCarthy don't need 8 golden gloves defenders to be successful.
sh3156 Verified Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 I think people should be happy that the Yankees have "made their move" and their move aint much. McCarthy is decent but he ain't much. I hate comments like bad defense has hurt him. This guy has a whip around 1.40 for two years now, thats a damn high sample size. He gets a lot of men on base, and unlike the NL the pitcher spot wont help him. I am not saying he will be bad for New York, I am saying that he wont help the yankees much. As for Nuno, I cant believe the negative opinions on this guy. I see him in the Diamondbacks rotation for years.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Kevin Towers is not a good GM but I'm sure he listened to other offers for McCarthy. The fact Nuno was his best offer shows that teams didn't like what they saw in him... I'm sure they all scouted him and didn't really like what they saw.

It's not like they cleared out their farm with this trade. McCarthy is a good pitcher and the Yankees gave up nothing to get him. It's a clear upgrade. There's no way to be happy about this from a Jays perspective.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Oh..my...god 10:44am: The Diamondbacks will eat $2.05MM of the $4.1MM owed to McCarthy for the rest of the year, tweets Buster Olney of ESPN.com. Meanwhile, the Yankees will pay the $1MM assignment bonus to McCarthy’s.

I don't think he is a good pitcher. Average yes, a great arm, yes, 4th guy on a championship team maybe. Good to me is defined as higher than above average. McCarthy's bread and butter was his cutter, and this year he has lost its use. Which means that all the time he used to go that cutter now he is going to the fastball, which is getting whacked. If he has his cutter back good on him, if he doesn't he wont last long in the ALEast
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 There's something up with McCarthy, the DBacks aren't that dumb. Towers is really, really good 1) JUpton for Prado+s*** 2) Bauer for Didi Gregorius 3) Skaggs+Eaton for Mark "Reynolds" Trumbo 4) Parker+ for Cahill 4) Owings for Deck McGuire?

But even if you say he's only average, isn't that still an upgrade over Nuno (who is decidedly below-average)? It's a clear upgrade!

Trust me those peripherals are misleading, he cant use his cutter for strikes. Ive watched him pitch, he isn't getting it over. Those hits are not bad defense, his fastball isn't moving, and he is getting pounded. Again if he has that problem figured out good on him, but breaking pitches travel a long way in Yankee Stadium However I will agree its a great move for the Yankees. They didn't give up much, and now get a possible key player

Clear upgrade for the Yankees and they gave up nothing and the Dbacks ate salary. No idea why the Jays woulldn't get him for depth if that was the cost.

All a pitcher can do is strike batters out, prevent walks and get ground balls. McCarthy has been very good at doing each of those three things. He is a very good pitcher. At least you agree it makes sense for the Yankees.

He is very out of touch.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Alright, that's it for me ITT. *sigh* I love these idiots. "I get the whole era is overstated argument, but let me cite some of his bad luck to support my argument."

pickoff22 Verified Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Thank goodness we didn't go after this scrub. Let the Yanks have him - this is a nothing move other than he's a below average pitcher who's a bit better than Nuno.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 No, his defense and the luck dragons have been bad. McCarthy has been one of the best pitchers in the National League. I've been an avid McCarthy supporter and I know the advanced metrics show he hasn't been that bad, though to say he's been one of the best pitchers in the NL is going a bit far.

Silly post, it's not all bad luck please, a pitcher who makes a good pitches don't just strike people out, they induce weak contact. mccarthy has Not pitched well, he often leaves pitches over the middle and gets hit hard. I laugh at these advanced stats people who think it explains everything. They can show a pitcher has pitched better then his numbers, but mccarthy is not one such example. BABIP is also an indication os inducing weak or good contact, it's not all luck thats ridiculous. Mccarthy won;t change the balance of power or is not much of an upgrade over anyone we already have.,

At least you agree it makes sense for the Yankees. So on the flip side, Goins should be our starting second baseman right? I mean, he can't control where the ball goes once it's put into play, right? Oh yeah I forgot, he induces a bunch of weak contact, thus explaining his bad BABIP. With McCarthy it's the opposite. It's not bad luck, he's getting hit hard. You saber guys are f***ed.
sh3156 Verified Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 I dont understand something. Based on Xfip a line drive and a weak grounder is the same thing? I dont think it is
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 You saber guys are f***ed. The stats that have came out since Moneyball are useful but sometimes people misread them. I don't want to point any fingers but it sounds like he's saying some AAA scrub should induce the same amount of weak fly balls as Kershaw.
