BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 If you haven't already voted, time is running out to send Edwin to the AS game, so you might want to. As of now he isn't going to make it, which is kind of an embarrassment for MLB and for us as Jays fans.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 He can still be written in And the Manager (Farrell) will pick him I hope... The problem with E5 is that he is a very quiet guy. He's not very active on social media, so it's hard for non-Jays fans to relate with him. Compare that with Jose Bautista, who despite not being the best MLB'er in the game right now is tops in voting.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 He can still be written in And the Manager (Farrell) will pick him I hope... It will look pretty bad if Farrell doesn't include Encarnacion when it's pretty clear that he deserves it more than his own player (Ortiz). I doubt Farrell wants to create any more bad blood between him and the Jays not to mention that he probably has a lot of appreciation for Encarnacion having coached him.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Author Posted July 3, 2014 The whole allstar voting system is an embarrassment to the MLB completely agree...and I usually don't even care about any of it. But in this case this year Id like to see Edwin get his due there again. He has been a beast yet again for us.

Now I can get back to ignoring the All Star game.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Seems like EE will get in as a bench player. Melky really needs help as if he doesn't get voted in as a starter, he may not go at all. And he's very close to Cespedes! Although there will be a real logjam at 1B/DH: Cruz, EE, Cabrera and Abreu. If Farrell takes Ortiz, one of those deserving guys may be out.

I'm quite fine with Melky not making the game.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Edwin will go, no manager could be that stupid to not bring him along. It would be a media nightmare.
Convo Verified Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 The whole allstar voting system is an embarrassment to the MLB What do you suggest?
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 The all-star game is meant to be for fans. Not just for smart fans who log on to internet message boards and talk sabermetrics, but for "dumb" (aka too busy with other priorities in life to become baseball experts) fans who casually watch the game and take their families out a couple times a year. If they want it to be a dumb, broken popularity contest that makes North America's political electoral systems look great, then let it be as such. It's not like this game means anything...oh wait.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 I hope that he doesn't make it just so the voting system can be completely discredited.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 What do you suggest? Sportswriters
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Sportswriters Why? Sportwriters are even worse. Ken Rosenthal wouldn't even put Josh Donaldson on the All Star team and he has Casey McGehee over Joey Votto. And look what writers do to awards voting. At the end of the day, the All-Star Game game is for the fans. If they want to see Derek Jeter take the field one last time, they can have that. The vast majority of the players they vote in are deserving too. The voting process also drums up an enormous amount of engagement in every market. You wouldn't get the build-up if sportswriters voted.

I can't believe anyone would seriously suggest sportswriters after how berserk this and the old forum went over the Cabrera/Trout MVP vote two years ago and the past couple of HOF votes, particularly on the topics of Morris and PEDs. The last thing we need is for sportswriters to flex their morality muscles during the summer as well, they already have the fall and winter for that.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 The game is supposed to be for the fans, this the fans should be able to vote on who they want to see in it. If anything, they could expand the roster by a couple spots to give the managers more wiggle room to select key players that were not voted in. People take some stuff way too seriously.

The last thing we need is for sportswriters to flex their morality muscles during the summer as well, they already have the fall and winter for that. The system that sees sportwriters voting on awards and the HOF is an anachronism anyway. It's a relic of the time when only a couple games a week were on TV (or none at all) and the newspaper didn't adequately cover the entire league. Sportswriters were the best candidates to decide stuff since they traveled with teams and were external people who worked in baseball full-time. The players and coaches didn't have a good handle on what happened elsewhere in the league. Sportwriters did and were a necessary bridge. That doesn't apply in the internet age. They're just regular people now... and many of them are just as biased as your average fan. Some New York scribe would pencil Jeter in at shortstop. The Boston writers would unanimously vote for Ortiz, Napoli and Pedroia.

The fans are doing a great job.

Just because you liked the all-star game as a kid, doesn't mean you have to like it now. Taking three days off from following baseball actually gives you a nice break in the middle of the season. Good time to watch that movie you've been wanting to see or play that video game you like or even spend time with loved ones if that's more your thing.

Jeter is the only undeserving player of the bunch and he's somewhat of a special case. The fans are doing a great job. Ever since online voting, the fans have typically done a reasonably good job. There's always at least one Red Sock or Yankee that doesn't really deserve to be there and for the most part that's it as far as mistakes go. The player voting for the reserves is often worse than the fan voting even thought that was supposed to be one of the things that would "fix" the all-star game. Pretty much every change to the All-Star game has just made the whole thing more convoluted to no real advantage. Taking away fan voting would be more of the same.
leaffie Verified Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 I have always thought the players should get a bigger vote.
