pickoff22 Verified Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 The real question is where are we with our 1st round draft picks in terms of signing them. I still wouldn't be comfortable with those three for 1 1/2 years of a starter, but with Hoffman and Pentecost inked I wouldn't be totally opposed to dealing those 3 in the right package. And I'm not surprised at all that the asking price is that high. People seem to always overvalue prospects and fans react strongly to losing them. Heck most people on here think Sanchez will be a bust anyways. Too many examples of top prospects not amounting to anything to be all that worried. Could Sanchez, Norris and Pompey all be all-stars? Maybe but the odds are so ridiculously against that from happening. Anyways, I'll deal them all but I would want to use those assets to bring back more than just Shark.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Agreed. Pompey will be a stud CFer sooner than expected. With him being a local kid, what more could the organization ask for in terms of promotional / media frenzy. He'll provide a massive buzz in many ways. Untouchable.
Governator Community Moderator Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I love all of the fantasy gms. We're not going to like it and neither is AA but it's in the Cubs best interest to stand put and hope for an overpay from a desperate contender. There are several teams interested and if things don't work out it's not the end of the world for them considering he can be moved in the off season.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 That's a steep price for a pitcher that is a free agent after next year. He's not helping the Cubs make the playoffs, so they have no reason to hold onto him. I'd include one of those prospects + other lesser ones. I agree with you totally Though do keep in mind that we have a chance of extending him or collecting a compensation draft pick.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Report: Blue Jays continue scouting Samardzija The Chicago Cubs and starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija have agreed to a one-year, $5,345,000 contract, avoiding arbitration. (Jeff Roberson/AP) SPORTSNET STAFF JUNE 24, 2014, 10:14 AM With five weeks remaining before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, the Toronto Blue Jays continue scouting the league for potential upgrades to their starting rotation. Pro scouting director Perry Minasian was among those in attendance at Wrigley Field to watch Jeff Samardzija pitch Monday, according to*Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Furthermore, Morosi reports that there are strong indications that the Chicago Cubs would trade Samardzija to the Blue Jays if they could obtain right-hander Aaron Sanchez, left-hander Daniel Norris, and centre fielder Dalton Pompey. However, the Blue Jays reportedly maintain that they won’t include all three prospects in the same deal, and are said to prefer David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays or Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies. Samardzija, 29, has a 2.53 ERA with 97 strikeouts and 31 walks in 103 innings this year. He’s earning $5.35 million and will be arbitration eligible one last time this coming off-season before hitting free agency following the 2015 campaign. Sanchez, who was recently promoted to triple-A, has established himself as Toronto’s top prospect. Though the 21-year-old has struggled with his fastball command this year, he has a 4.08 ERA over the course of 16 starts in the upper minors. Norris, also 21, was enjoying a breakout season at Class A before earning a promotion to double-A. The lefty posted a 1.22 ERA with 76 strikeouts and 18 walks in 13 starts for the Dunedin Blue Jays before advancing to New Hampshire. Pompey has spent the entire season at Class A Dunedin, where he’s batting .312/.392/.460 with 27 stolen bases. The 21-year-old Mississauga, ON native was a 16th round draft pick in 2010.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 It is a seller's market. The Cubs will get at least two stud prospects for Shark from someone. So I guess you think the Rays are going to get 4 stud prospects then for Price? I wouldn't say they'll at least get 2. They'll get 2 on the high end, if they're lucky. But then I guess it all depends on what you call a stud.

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 What this thread tells me is that I need to learn more about Pompey. Yeah he's a pretty good player overall at a prime position.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I agree with you totally Though do keep in mind that we have a chance of extending him or collecting a compensation draft pick. I doubt he'd take an extension. Comp pick would help some, but say he's injured next year or has a year like he did last year, then what?

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Anyone understand what the f*** is going on with Price? That walk rate that looked completely unsustainable last year is even lower this year. He's gone from a good pitcher with the reputation of a great one to possibly an actual bonafied great pitcher. I'd be lying if I said I saw this coming. I really expected big regression from him actually.

kgm1 Verified Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Man I would cry if they gave up those three. I realize that if we are still in first after the allstar break AA will have to get a starter and a top of rotation guy but man taking our likely top 3 guys hurts . Next thing i know Barreto will be in there . Please AA stick to your guns and DON'T give up all three . One yes I have resigned myself to the fact we will be gutting our farm system again but i just can't move all three. In fact I just can't move both pitchers.

I always thought of him as "great" since 2010-2011... not sure about this "good" reputation you're talking about. He's been amazing this year outside of leading league in HR allowed... too bad his team is s*** (or fortunately in our case)... Better question is why is he giving up so many HR ... a product of him throwing more strikes?

GNick Verified Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I just read this on my fantasy website and thought id share with you. It says there's more at foxsports.com Cubs, Blue Jays at a stalemate for Jeff Samardzija The Cubs and Blue Jays can't agree on a deal for pitcher Jeff Samardzija, according to FoxSports.com. The Cubs are willing to make a deal, but Toronto is hesitant to meet Chicago's demands. The Cubs are reportedly asking for three prospects, pitcher Aaron Sanchez, pitcher Daniel Norris and outfielder Dalton Pompey. The Blue Jays are rumored to be willing to part with maybe one or two of those players, but do not want to deal all three. Samardzija is expected to be dealt by the trade deadline. He owns a 2.53 ERA over 103 innings. It's my first post, so be easy on me! Thx That would clean out Jays farm system
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Maybe something with Hanigan's framing? Hanigan's good but is he better than Molina? He's always benefited from good framing but there seems to be a lot more going on. It seems that losing speed on his fastball has made him a better pitcher. I used to think it meant his skills were eroding but maybe he's simply holding back so that he can pitch with more control. If that's the case than somebody give his pitching coach an award or something. http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfxo.aspx?playerid=3184&position=P&pitch=FA
