If Dickey has any hunger for the game left in him he needs to start showing it. s***, just give us seven innings, even if you give up 4-5 ER in the process. 14 starts. He's only completed seven innings twice. He has some value because he's fairly durable and can take the ball every 5th day but he needs to find a way to be more efficient.

I think he's brought a lot of value in making the relievers better that follow him ie the Dickey Effect. But hi actual performance has been underwhelming to say the least.

If people looked closer, they'd realize that the way Dickey has pitched the last 8 or 9 starts is better then several "top" pitches in baseball and he doesn't flame out early ( sure 6th or 7th inning, but it's not 5 or 6 runs in the first two innings ). Sure, we could have an "ace" like Verlander or spent a boat load on money on Jiminez or Nolasco and get a pitcher that is much better then Dickey .... oh wait, that's not true, Dickey is pitching as good or better then all of them. Dickey is a valuable member of this team, just because you were hoping for better, so what. Two top assets ? TDA is questionable, was already injury prone when the trade was made. Syndegaard is now injured, he's the only guy who could be valuable ( maybe ). Without Dickey, we'd be in trouble, domino effect on our staff weakening it across the board. The only asset we gave up that would have helped our 3 year window is Alvarez. In fact, without the trades one could argue that both the Mets and the Marlins would be in better shape to contend this year in their weak division. They chose to rebuild and reduce payroll, sometimes there is an unexpected cost. I'd say all the teams got something out of the trades now. Edited June 10, 2014 by Cooler Heads Prevail

BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I think if we acquire a solid starting pitcher (Hammels, for example) before the deadline, Dickey should be bumped from the rotation. I dislike Happ as much as the next guy, but he's 5-2 and has been really effective. Dickey is Dickey. He'd be a great 3-inning long man, and spot starter. Not unlike Wakefield was used. Although you'd have to unhitch Thole from his hip.

He's been bad these last three starts but he was very good the 6 or so starts prior.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Oh my.............. What do we have. Buerhle, Hutch, Stroman, Happ, Dickey. Is it even possible that there is a scenario where it makes sense to trade for Hamels to replace Dickey?? (assuming Dickey isn't injured). I don't think there is. If Dickey is 5th because everybody else is pitching awesome then there is no need for Hamels. Better off to just let Dickey work it out as number 5. If everybody is s*** and Dickey the shittiest then they will just replace Happ or a s***** Stroman/Hutch with Hamels and let Dickey work it out. The only scenario I could see is if Dickey went Romero... but even then he wouldn't be replaced until next years deadline.

In my video game world, we use him for 2-3 innings every second day, to totally befuddle the opposition instead of the BA's climbing the 2rd and 3rd times through the batting order. Take a couple starters, like say Hutch and Happ, two guys who won't or shouldn't pitch past the 5th. Make Dickey their piggybacked middle relief pitcher for 2-3 innings on those starts. It would totally screw up the opposition. Plus, Dickey could spot start. But I know, craziness. And not real world. I just like the idea. Dickey can be such an effective tool (hee hee), it'd be really cool to utilize his wizardry more than once every 5 starts is all I'm saying.

Doesnt sound that crazy, i bet La Russa would of tried it had he had Dickey at his disposal. I don't think Dickey would like the idea of it too much though.
