Gunnar Heidt

Rank: 193 College of Charleston, JuniorHeight: 5'11", Weight: 195 Position: SS DOB: 9/12/1992 Bats: R, Throws: RTwitter: @gunnarheidt2Prev. drafted: NeverScouting Grades:

Hit: 45 | Power: 40 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45 | Overall: 45

Heidt shook off a subpar summer in the Cape Cod League to post a strong junior season. It ended prematurely when he injured his hand in late April, but he still showed enough to earn Draft consideration as early as the fifth or sixth round.

While Heidt doesn't have a true carrying tool, he does a little bit of everything and offers versatility, as well. He'll be more of a second baseman than a shortstop at the upper levels of pro ball, and he could become a super utilityman also capable of playing on the outfield corners.

Heidt has more strength and bat speed than most middle infielders, and his ability to barrel balls should translate into decent batting averages with gap power. He's a solid runner whose range and arm strength are decent on the left side of the infield.

Tanner Houck

Rank: 132 Collinsville HS (Ill.), Senior Height: 6'5", Weight: 215 Position: RHP DOB: 6/29/1996 Bats: R, Throws: RTwitter: @tanner_houck20Commitment: Missouri Scouting Grades: Fastball: 65 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 45

The comparisons that Houck draws speak to his potential. Some scouts look at his frame and high-effort delivery and see Max Scherzer, while others point to his long arm action and the high elbow in his mechanics and see Justin Masterson. He also evokes memories of Nick Burdi, another Illinois prep product who likely will go in the first round this June after spending three years at Louisville.

Houck already touches 93 mph and works at 89-92 with his fastball, which figures to gain velocity as he gets stronger. His heater is also notable for its heavy sink and also features some armside run at times.

Both of his secondary pitches show promise. He sells his deceptive split-changeup with fastball arm speed, though he doesn't need to use it often against high schoolers, and he shows some aptitude for spinning a slider. He's committed to Missouri, which is where Scherzer blossomed into a first-round selection.

Just asking, why wouldn't a team that's near the top of the standings not just spam drafting all the good guys from 11 on and just taking the fine?

We'll probably take a bunch of scrubs for a while now.

This guys deserve respect. Change "scrubs" for a most suitable synonym like "org guys" :)

Its depends on the risk/reward of going over the budget to sign all those guys. I believe the harshest penalty is to lose 2 future first round picks, so you basically need to nail down every pick in this draft. It is very much a case by case thing but it would not surprise me to see the Yankees do it in a strong draft year. They are already abusing the IFA process so for me it is only a matter of time until they abuse the amatuer draft.

You could do that actually. a lot of projected first round picks fall anyway, so if you take a s*** ton of fallen first rounders from 10-40 and sign them with unlimited amount of money the loss of the 1st round pick wouldn't even be bad

That's what I'm thinking. If you signed like 10 guys that fell from the top 200 or whatever, you are more likely to get something good out of it than two late 1sts (assuming your team is doing good where you're unlikely to get a top pick)

Mike Papierski

Rank: 194 Lemont HS (Ill.), Senior Height: 6'3", Weight: 205 Position: C DOB: 2/26/1996 Bats: S, Throws: R Twitter: @mpappy14 Commitment: Louisiana State Scouting Grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 50 | Run: 30 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

In a deep crop of Illinois high school catchers, Papierski could have the highest all-around ceiling of them all. He offers more physical projection than Evan Skoug (Libertyville), defends better than Simeon Lucas (Grant Community) and provides more offense than Mitch Trees (Sacred Heart-Griffin).

A switch-hitter with a strong build, Papierski shows bat speed and power from both sides of the plate. He can let hittable pitches go by at times, but when he turns the bat loose he makes consistent hard contact.

Though Papierski is tall for a catcher, he should be able to stay at the position. He has solid arm strength, developing receiving skills and good agility behind the plate. He's a Louisiana State recruit, as is his highly regarded Lemont teammate, lefthander Jake Latz.

Draft strategy to take both of them. Might feel like signing together. I hope they are besties.

Smart move.

Some of these tough signs may simply be insurance against another Bickford scenario with Reid-Foley. That years the Jays gave themselves somwhere else to put the money they saved on Hollon and others.

Jays

Isaacs, Dusty Georgia Tech (GA) RHP R/R SR

"Isaacs pitched in the rotation and the bullpen during his four years at Georgia Tech, but he was much more effective as a reliever. He filled a bullpen-ace type role this spring, appearing in 29 games, often for more than one inning. Isaacs throws his fastball in the low-90s with good tailing action. He has learned to pitch off his fastball and does a good job of working it in on the hands of hitters. Isaacs’ slider is inconsistent, but it is a solid offering at its best. He is likely to remain in the bullpen as a professional because his changeup lags behind his other two offerings and he has fringy control."

we can sign Reid-Foley and 3 or 4 of this guys (Latz, Heidt, Houck, Papierski)

MLB.com had a lot of people's names wrong.

Speaking of names, one of the guys on BA's list is named Nolan Savage. What an awesome name.

I find Sean Ian Reid-Foley to be quite the douche-tastic name and it also seems to fit the character.
