Spoonovic Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Use this thread for all things Stroman. Greg Wisniewski @coolhead2010 2h @harrypav Stroman said in interviews that he was throwing the curve today, not slider. Took a look at pitch f/x and they look similar. That nasty pitch he throws, is it a curve ball or a slider? Should we just call it a Slurve?
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 It looked like a slider but if that wasn't the slider then did we see the slider at all this game?
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Very, very impressive pitch whatever the heck it was. So many groundball outs (might be more related to the Royals being a team that hit a ton of GB's... but still promising).

flafson Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Velocity wise it could have been a curveball, slider is usually faster. It was around 82 mph.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Looked like a slider to me. Slider http://fat.gfycat.com/EachSparklingHorseshoebat.gif
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 What the heck is up with that slider? Holy crap.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 It's filthy If he can do that consistently he will be impossible to hit.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 If he can do that consistently he will be impossible to hit. He does. His issue is with the fastball
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Pretty much every breaking ball falls somewhere between a pure curveball (12-6) and a pure slider. It's a continuum. The distinction isn't important in describing what a guy throws. This pitch Stroman used today was a hard breaking ball with both horizontal and vertical movement.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Basically what I took from this first start is basically Kyle Drabek's stuff, but he can actually control it. That pretty damn fap-worthy.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 there is little difference between Matt Harvey's slider and curve either. He's always calling it a curve
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I'm still a bit pessimistic. Yeah he has the best slider on the team (other than Santos). But his fastball is still straight and one that you can sit on and comfortably hit (since his release point is lower than other pitchers). I want to see Stroman master his change-up first before I can annoint him as stud status. I think he can contribute this year, but I think he has more room to grow and improve. We shall see how Stroman fares in a few months as there are more reports on him.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I actually missed the game today, but saw the highlights. It's pretty clear that Stroman has big league stuff. Anyways I think the whole board agrees he's a better option even short term than the double H's they're running out. Looks like Hendriks will get the cut, good guy but he gave up way too many borderline homeruns to a terrible offense last start. Time to send him back.
theblujay Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I've been all in on him for a little while now and I'm so glad he's finally in the rotation.
43211234 Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Isn't Stroman supposed to have a godly cutter too? Maybe that's what he calls his slider?
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Ever since I first watched Stroman pitch, I've liked his fastball command, much like Hutchison. People will always bring up his height and lack of a downward plane on his pitches because of his height, but there are plenty of tall pitchers whose fastballs get lit up so I guess they get lit up because....who knows, maybe they have too much of a downward plane on their pitches, lol. Royals aren't a great hitting team, at least not so far this year so we've gotta keep this in mind. I hope he'll be given a regular turn in the rotation, but I have my doubts given the way they've handled him.

That slider alone was just filthy and he has a good fastball. If he can locate that fastball he will be making hitters look silly when he mixes in the slider.

To me, if he doesn't make it as an MLB pitcher, it'll be because his stuff just wasn't good enough period. It's not like tall pitchers don't get lit up.

But I liked Stroman’s change in the AFL. Good pitcher. ReplyReplied to 0 times RetweetRetweeted 3 times3 FavoriteFavorited 3 times3

Unless he can effectively keep people off his fastball, he's going to get blown up a lot. I like the velocity and location on it, but I don't like movement. Will have to see more starts before making any judgements
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 That pitch isn't a slider, nor a curve. It's a slurve. Too much two plane break to be considered a curve, and too slow with too much downward plane to be a slider. He's rolling off his curveball is what he's doing (his tiny little fingers may not let him get full control over a full front snap). Technically a mechanical flaw, but he's making it work on that particular pitch. Tiny little fingers lol you make him sound like he's Peter Dinklage sized.
shortstop Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 he's got a great arsenal of weapons...effective and consistent use of a change will keep hitters off balance...wish his fb had some movement but perhaps it'll come...I think Stroman has the tools to be very effective...needs to play around with the hitters heads & keep 'em guessing & off-balance

Man you must hate that this midget throws hard and can't properly grip the ball but everything is coming up sexy for him. You mad Moogy?
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Who are some good pitchers with straight fast balls? Billy Koch had a straight 100 mph fastball that was effective for a while.
