Tampa up early on Detroit.

Hope they can hold on.

Price getting no run support today vs his old team. 1-0 in the 6th.

We just need September to be another May. Thats all.

It might happen. Most of the games are vs. AL East teams. But we really need to beat Tampa and Baltimore.. and of course there's the Seattle series.

But 5 losses back.

Tied with the Indians in that department. And the Indians get multiple series against the Astros, Twins and ChiSox going forward.

At this point last year, the 2nd wildcard team was 71-54, instead of 68-57. Thank the lord for mediocrity.

Indians aren't going to make it. They have injuries to Swisher, Murphy, Raburn, and have a weak starting rotation after Kluber. And there's no Stroman/Norris/Sanchize in the Indians system coming down the stretch.

BTW, Detroit has double-headers coming up in the next two weeks. And after they disappointed vs. the Rays today, they've got their work cut out vs. the Twins and Yankees. They're .500 vs. the Twins.. and don't even know who their starters will be on Saturday. Currently, Detroit's probables are:

Ray (FRI), Verlander (SAT... maybe), TBA, Scherzer (SUN)

And Saturday's will depend if Verlander if healthy.

MLB kind of feels a bit like the NHL with this 2nd WC in that the league's mediocre teams get to experience playoff pushes late into the season. Not really a fan.

Yes, but it's a necessity to boost attendance in markets. Also, the NFL is getting ready to water down their playoff system as well by expanding the wild card AGAIN. It's not just the MLB.

Tigers/Royals have easy series ( Twins/Rangers) coming up.

We really need to win 7/9 on his homestead to get somewhat back into striking distance.

That's the number I had in mind too

Gonna be tough

If they win 6 or 7 in a row starting tonight then they could be playing meaningful baseball in sept. Obviously a tall task though.

Honestly though just get to within two games of the WC and it could get interesting.

Yep, it would be exciting and sell tickets, even if chances of making it are slim.

It really does suck that Baltimore ran away with the division though because our Sept games against them could have REALLY been something if they were still in reach.

It would sell tickets and keep interest up. It's likely only a matter of time before the playoffs expand again, for exactly that reason. Artifical parity is great for revenues.

I don't like the idea of expanded playoff spots, but at the same time I don't understand why the MLB doesn't expand. It would drive up revenues for several teams during the season and also bring in more playoff revenue and ratings.

Royals have an easy stand, but the Tigers do not.. they're 4-4 vs. the Twins this year, and won't have Price in the series.

I'm pretty scared that they're going to be inclined to go in that direction when they see how even one extra WC spot has increased interest late in the season in multiple cities. Teams like New York, Toronto, Cleveland, and Seattle would be playing out the schedule at this point in past, but are now in the thick of a playoff chase. That's a quarter of the league!

I hope it stops here though. The NHL has turned itself into an absolute farce trying to maximize revenues across the league until the season is over.

How is that when the kings won a cup as an 8th seed a few years ago?

That's kind of my point. You cheapen an 82 (or 162) game season when you expand the size of the playoff pool. I'd rather see a small amount of teams that have proven that they're elite over a full season than give half the league a chance to go on a run in the playoffs and have mediocre teams winning championships.

Maybe you're right but I like seeing 8th seeds beating the 1st seeds. Its exciting.

We just see it differently. I like seeing top seeds win.

The one thing I would definitely change is have a 3 game series for the wild card. This one game playoff is bull s***.

Those Kings were dominant in the playoffs and would have had a higher seed if not for the incompetent Terry Murray coaching them for half the season. They then backed it up by following that championship with a WCF appearance and then another Cup. I wouldn't say they're "mediocre."
