Jeff Passan @JeffPassan

Sources: Orioles C Matt Wieters to visit Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday for examination on elbow soreness. Worst-case scenario is UCL tear.

I know this should be in the Around Baseball thread, but this could be a major loss for a team that is supposed to be a contender, as bad as when the Rays lost Moore, Cobb and Hellickson to injury.

I wonder if he's just going to try and play through it to be honest. He's in the prime of his career on a team that believe they are contenders. Although the whole thing seems weird- if he might have a UCL tear why are they even putting him in to DH (he has 2 hits so far so maybe he's ok!?!?)

He's going on the DL after this game. Caleb Joseph is expected to be purchased from AAA Norfolk after the game. Why the O's even let Wieters play at DH with no backup catcher is really questionable.

Has there been any prior examples of this for other players? Is it best to just DH Wieters?

Our own catching prospect AJ Jimenez had TJS last season IIRC

don't care if im evil but this is a division rival, i refuse to believe everyone wants wieters to be healthy

Not everyone. I do partly because he's on my fantasy team. I mean if it was a hamstring pull or something I would probably like that, but the possibility of TJS sucks for anyone.

I remember they wanted Albert Pujols to get one but he rehab it

Big difference between a 1B and a catcher though

Seems you can probably hit OK with a UCL problem. Throwing is the problem, so probably would affect pitchers, catchers, outfielders the most.

I want him healthy... I have him on my dynasty team.

Does not need surgery. Good. Baltimore fans can breathe a sigh of relief. What % of players who see Dr. Andrews to test for TJS actually get it done? It seems like a lot, so I'm a bit surprised, but maybe you only remember bad news.

UPDATE:

Wieters to DL, and will face Tommy John surgery on July 1 if he can't throw by then.

he should just get it over with, he might not even play next year if he continues to wait

He'd still be fine for next year with TJ in July. The recovery isn't so long for position players, even catchers

BALTIMORE -- Progressing from a right elbow injury more slowly than he had hoped, Orioles All-Star catcher Matt Wieters is planning to see Dr. James Andrews next Monday.

Wieters, who played catch again on Monday in his every-other-day progression, is still experiencing some discomfort, so he wanted to see Andrews to get his opinion. Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said he is hoping that Wieters will be back with the team on Tuesday, although there's nothing definite right now. Wieters is trying to avoid season-ending surgery on his elbow and has gone the rest-and-rehab route since his last game on May 10.

He has not caught a game for the Orioles since May 4, and Showalter said previously that July 1 is when the team would have to make a more definitive decision on Wieters to ensure that he's not sidelined for next season.

Hey Duquette, I hear the Rangers have a TOP 10 catcher in their minor league system, and he might be available via trade...

I thought TJS for players was a less lengthy recovery than for pitchers?

If he wants to continue catching I'd imagine he would be looking looking at 10-12 months recovery.

For the most part yes, but catchers are longer than your typical position player since they throw just as much as the pitcher, granted at lower velo. Longer recovery than say a second baseman or 1b might take by far.
